i always just use elitistjerks when i'm leveling a new toon. takes the guesswork out of deciding which talents are the best

From what I gather, the whole point of the change is that there won't be any 'best talents' overall. There might be talents that fit certain situations better, but ultimately they are all supposed to be viable. Now, I'll believe it when I see it, but if they can balance it, I can see it making a casual player like me have a lot more fun with the game.

ive never had a problem with the current talent system, and honestly, i dont think i like the new system (not that we know much about it thus far). i've always enjoyed picking and choosing which abilities i want, but apparently i am in the minority

Then why don't you like the new system which is EXACTLY THAT? Picking and choosing what abilities you want. (ie. You want to do mutilate, but with killing spree instead of vendetta.)
No more "x talent increases crit by 1% per point" or some other equally bad iteration, instead only abilities.

My account had been inactive for 3 1/2 years (tbc era), but I recently resurrected it only to hit level 20 in a day and quit again. I was kind of annoyed by the idea that you can't split talent trees anymore, but also happy they gave all locks soul link and I wouldn't have to spec boring in pvp. Anyway I have nothing against this game but none of my guildmates play any more and I realized I would hate to honor grind alone and play arena with randoms.

pve is anyway. The combat system is still one of the best for pvp.

This is everyones complaint, but when you play an mmo, you should expect a sort of rock, paper, scissors element to the pvp. The idea of mmo pvp is group pvp and bringing each characters benefits to the group. 1v1 balancing should be irrelevant. WoW's combat system is extremely smooth. There are no other modern mmos that can even touch wow in smoothness of gameplay.

Also I don't understand how the pvp in wow is more "unbalanced" than a game like daoc or any of the other "elite" pvp games.

The main problem with pvp in wow isn't balance, it's inflated gear. It's really hard for a skilled player in blues to kill a shitty player in current season arena gear. The itemization in general is a serious low point.
