NOTE: This question is not asking "Why did you start posting here?", because that answer would be for 98% of people, "Because I like(d) Dream Theater." That said, you can only pick one. Your *main* reason for being here. I would expect that the first option would get more votes in DT-side, as that *is* the the main reason they're here. What I'm really interested in is- do you mostly want to talk about DT's genre? Do you come here to start threads about, get recommendations for, or share your thoughts on all the bands related to DT? There is a strong case to be made that most people here's favorite genre is either prog rock or prog metal. Or are you here because you like all kinds of rock and metal music? Certainly you can't always be listening to or thinking about prog. There's plenty of good stuff across the massive (sub-)genres of rock and metal, probably too much to ever exhaust or get tired of. Whether you're into more mainstream things such as pop-rock or you are much more into underground things like black metal, it's OK because you know there are plenty of fans of those genres here and your discussions will probably never get old & the well of recommendations will never run dry. OR, do you honestly post here because you know the *true* diversity of characters on this forum? You realize that there are fans of bluegrass, classical, electronica, folk, funk, hip-hop, jazz, latin, pop, post-rock, psychadelica, rap, techno, and more, who are always here as a resource for your less Dream Theater-focused tastes. You can engage in discussions about the farthest reaches of music and really see what it means for people to have "open minds" about the human creation we call music. At the core it's really just that we all have a deep-set adoration for music that brings us all together. Choose carefully. While I'd like to say I'm here because I'm totally open-minded and want to commune with all the fans of the vast music world out there, I can't say I've reached the stage where that's my motivation for posting on this message board. Though, I certainly appreciate the resource and the fact that those people are here. But probably 90% or more of my music discussion here is still in forms of rock and metal music.
I used to be interested in finding bands similar to DT here, but now it's just to find any cool new music. And you know, I'm bored sometimes.
Definitely the last one. If it weren't for people here I'd probably never have got into electronica, which was probably the step that made me realise that music can be good in absolutely any style.
I chose the last one, because I've been recommended music from many genres- (All types of) Metal, Rock, Electronica, Jazz, Drone/Ambient, etc I started off looking for DT-like bands, then opened up, and started looking for pretty much anything that's good
I am testing a hypothesis with this thread. I am thinking that the bottom option will completely run away with it (and it already seems to be doing so). But I understand that there are surely people at all these stages here.
I really don't even consider this a Dream Theater board. To me, they're just another one of the many bands I can find here who just happen to be lucky enough to have their own forum.
bottom option for prog rock/metal, jazz/fusion, post-rock/metal, electronica/IDM, hip-hop, avant-garde, drone, psychedelic, etc
Aye. I think I'm close to breaking that last barrier for real. But right now I'm honestly just a n00b in many of those genres I mentioned and haven't even sought out stuff from others. Still, I think a big part of posting at DT.net/bb & DTF.com is for people to move from option 1 (the reason they first are attracted to the board) to option 4 throughout what should probably take most people multiple years.
I'm just as into jazz, post-rock, and hardcorish type music as rock or prog these days, so I come here to keep learning more.
I guess it poses the question of whether or not DT is a gateway to other music, or their fans are. I mean, without Dream Theater, they wouldn't have found the board, etc. But going further, it's easy to see that DT can be a gateway to classic prog, death metal, regular metal, cheese rock, etc... But fans of DT (especially DT) seem to know more about every genre of music than most.
I voted the last option: I'm into a lot of more simplistic stuff like Nirvana, Mclusky, Sonic Youth etc...the very opposite of what a lot of users are into...overall though, I enjoy the general attitude towards music, plus I do enjoy the odd technical/heavy band and a bit of post-rock, so I have found a lot of new music through this forum, as I'm sure many users have.
Really? I started at Option 1 (in that I joined to discuss DT), and was like that for a few months, and then went straight to Option 4. Never passed through the other 2 stages.
I don't necessarily come here to get music recommendations, but it is awesome that this board isnt full of prog-elitists. Chose #4
I chose the third option, but not that I analyize this, I've come to the conclusion this same thing happened to me
Option three for me. I've passed through one and two, and four isn't necessary for me. I have some IRL friends who are really into non-rock/non-metal related musics like funk, hip hop, post/indie-rock, punk, electronica, classical, jazz, and so on and so on, and I take most of my suggestions for these areas of music from them. (It's not exclusive - for example, I picked up BT's "This Binary Universe" based on recommendations on this board.) On the other hand, I dont know anybody IRL who's as into metal (and some rock) as I am, so for that I take to the internet. Those types of threads are what interest me the most here.
This poll lacks a "none" option. I no longer consider myself a metalhead, and i never heard most of the music discussed here. My reasons for still tagging along are others... only i dont know them o_O
I didn't want a none option as this thread isn't meant to encompass every reason one can be on these boards, just every reason they could be here for *music*.
I don't know if you care, since I don't fit into any of the categories, but I'm not here for the music at all. Never was.
I notice people with similar tastes mention bands I've never heard of, so this place is good for discovering new music.
Musically, I am less interested in rock-oriented music than I used to be, although there is still plenty of it I like and want to get into. I'm here for everything interesting, though. Mainly, though, I'm here for the elephant penis pictures.
I voted three, although I'm in between three and four. I listen to a stuff besides rock/metal, of course, but it just seems like those particular genres get discussed here more. This place is definitely good for discovering new bands. Otherwise, I'm here for the unending source of drama, entertainment, general good times, celebrations of Vlasto Day and oh, sometimes male attention.
Music is only part of the reason I post here, but it's sure as fuck not for the prog or only for the ovearching rock genre, so I voted for the last option.
I started out as 1, to see what people thought of the new albums especially when they came out, for SFAM-ToT. I never really went through phase 2, I was already a big fan of power metal, melodic death, and a few other genres, so I went straight to phase 3. Increasingly so over the past year or two, I've been at least as interested in discussing non-rock/metal genres. Over the past few months I've been more interested in talking about hip-hop/rap, and now I'm getting a lot more into post-rock than ever, so I can see myself immersing myself in those threads a lot more in the near future. So I voted option 4.
QFT. This was the very first forum I ever became apart of. (Well, DT.NET), NOT posting here would be odd. I've gotten to know the community, there are lots of people here to ask about different shit, music or not. We all seem to be experts in some field or another and it's great to just come here and chill. Hanging out here is totally not about Dream Theater anymore. :P
