If I had to choose just one game I'd go with Bad Company (multiplayer), as long as the group of people I used to play with were still playing as well. Good times.
Civilization II Simcity 2000 Age of Empires II Starcraft: Brood War Baldurs Gate II Jagged Alliance II Rollercoaster Tycoon Thats a lotta 2's
Theme Hospital. Despite some annoying bugs, I still play that game every other year (as in, all the way through).
Still one of my two favorite games to play on the DS while taking a churn, the other being Mario Kart DS.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles Chrono Trigger Banjo Kazooie Zelda: Majora's Mask Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 3 Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy X Shadow Hearts: Covenant
I don't know if it's been out long enough to be considered "timeless," but I know at least for me, Starcraft II is definitely going to be considered timeless for me 5-10+ years down the road.
Megaman 2 Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy VI Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow Gold/Silver The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Super Metroid Metroid Prime Tales of Phantasia Heroes of Might and Magic 3
I'd put Gold/Silver as timeless over Red/Blue. There were a lot of frustrating elements to R/B that were fixed, like the increased item slots, better animation, and added perks like colour, having two main areas, getting phone calls when your PC boxes filled up, etc.
I chose Red/Blue mainly because I've been frustrated with every new Pokemon release with their 100 or so new pokemons. It has really got out of hand, I prefer the original 150. But now that you mentioned it, I didn't think about this enough, Red/Blue had some frustrating flaws that were fixed with Gold/Silver. And the 250 pokemons in those games wasn't too bad. Plus the possibility to go back to Kanto after owning the Johto league was mindblowing back then. This is a close call, but I'm with you on this one now that I think about this.
I don't know if you guys have seen this but you can play quite a few of the old Pokemon games (plus Diamond) on this site: http://www.playr.org/search/pokemon
Fire Red/Leaf Green are the best imo, but I really wouldn't put them as "timeless" because they have the same problem as FF IX, only exacerbated imo. Only way I can play these games is with an emulator quadrupling the speed.
Chrono Trigger Secret of Mana Bubsy Fallout 2 Monkey Island 1 Baldurs Gate 2 Donkey Kong Country 2 Final Fantasy VI Final Fantasy VII LoZ:A Link To The Past Super Probotector (contra) TMNT In Time Super Mario World Super Mario 64 Super Mario Galaxy Super Metroid Battlefield 1942 Goldeneye Perfect Dark Ocarina of Time Smash Brothers Melee Mario Kart 64 Street Fighter II Lost Vikings 1-2 Day of The Tentacle Jones In The Fast Lane Street Rod (?) Star Wing Star Fox 64 That's as far I bother to go right now
They were all good, but they got progressively easier. 3 was a walk in the park compared to the first game. 2 had the balance just right IMO.
HOW THE FUCK DID WE ALL FORGET BATTLETOADS? It's one of the hardest and most enjoyable games ever made. That level above is just the 3rd stage and it's already harder than most games ever are. If you've played this game, you know what a nightmare it is memorizing the path through this level and how long it takes (and then you generally die in the next level and have to start all over). Also: These are games that are especially timeless for me in terms of difficulty in that, like Battletoads, I played the fuck out of these games and never beat them. Also, found a random site that lets you play this online. Z is B-button, X is A-Button. http://flashgamesite.com/play1066game.html I skipped NG2 because, unlike the other two in the series, it had unlimited continues. The actual gameplay was just as hard, though, and it would take me all day to beat it. NG3 is easier than the first game but still very hard, and I never beat it. Also, I used to think all these games were called "Ninja The Gaiden" because that's what the title screen looks like. This was a lesser-known NES game called Robowarrior. It was kind of similar to Bomberman in some ways, in that you could place bombs and blow up shit (in this case, mostly trees but other blocks as well), but instead of having a level confined to one screen, it would scroll from left to right (like SMB1, the scrolling was one-way only). This game is insanely hard. Castlevania 3. Another NES classic that was ridiculously difficult.
it used to piss me off so much - even at like 8 years old when people thought the bubsy games were even a little bit good abominations
It's not THAT difficult. It's hard, yes, but not insane like the Ninja Gaiden games which get downright unfair at times.
