Actually the reality is that most adapted screenplays today are far more loyal to the original story than previous standards. Sometimes to the detriment of the final product.

I caught up with this last night, watched episode 3-5 of season 2. Felt like nothing particularly significant happened the whole time. Can't believe pregnancy was the big 'shocking end' of an episode. :lol

The original Full Metal Alchemist deviates heavily from the manga. The new one follows it exactly.

The original Hellsing series deviates heavily from the manga. The new one follows it exactly.

Constantine and V for Vendetta deviate heavily from the comics. The next Alan Moore adaption, Watchmen, is extremely true to the comic.

The early film adaptions of Dracula deviate heavily from the frame story. Including elements like vampire shadows, death by sunlight, and other things that have now become accepted as vampire folklore.

Stanley Kubrick always altered the stories of the books he adapted. He would change elements that would add comedic flare or visually heaviness. One of the best examples of this is Peter Seller's character in Lolita.

The film adaption of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest deviates so heavily from Ken Kesey's novel that the story is almost entirely different.

Your statement assumes one or more of the following:

    1. Deviations from the source material is a new phenomena. Which it isn't

    2. The percentage of deviations from the source material has gone up over time. Which it hasn't

    3. At this point in history people shouldn't be surprised that a motion picture adaption deviates from the source material. I can give you this one, but based on your response to my last post I doubt this was your assumption.

I like how Dale's response to any problem is to open his eyes up really wide at it until it goes away.

Also I'm not sure which of these I find more morbid: snapping the leg of a live chicken, or using a lost child as a plot contrivance. :ponder

    Herschel is stupid as fuck.

why the shitting fuck are they feeding the dead people when they don't actually have much food for the living?

Rick never asked Herschel about those chicks going to the firing range, even though he made a big deal out of it.

Carl is a terrible, terrible actor.

Laurie is completely unbelievable (OMG HE WAS JUST ALMOST KILLED BY A GUN SO HE CAN'T CARRY A GUN WTF!!!) sure she's pregnant (and a woman), but she's almost as irrational as Herschel.

zombies apparently don't make any noise until you see them (drug store)

the housing development was completely deserted until 45689027853 zombies all converged on the one house with people in it.

Andre is unbelievably pathetic (but post-zombie-killing sex is probably pretty good)

Katie's sudden intense feelings for Glen are completely unbelieveable (in the course of three days she's gone from "one time thing casual fuck" to "omg i can't stand to see you become like them you're so amazing!!!")

why would Katie bother even finding the pills if she felt so strongly about them?

the Rick/Laurie scene at the end was actually decent, but the whole "I DON'T WANT TO BRING A BABY INTO THE WOOOORLD" shtick along with the "OMG YOU KEPT A SECRET FROM ME HOW CAN I TRUST YOU BUT THIS IS SO IRONIC BECAUSE I'M ACTUALLY KEEPING A SECRET FROM YOU BUT YOU SHOULD TRUST ME!!" kinda ruined it anyway.

oh and the Daryl/Andre make up scene was thin at best, and with as heavy-handed as this show is, probably means Andre is going to shoot Daryl again.

OH AND FUCK DALE. seriously. half the time he's supposed to be this seasoned old man with a lot of common sense, and the other half he's rash and unthinking, and wide-eyed and bumbling. i really can't stand him anymore. they try to show him being "discrete" to not rat out Glen, and yet then Katie blames Glen anyway. also why the fuck would Glen allow her to come to the drug store with him, knowing he needed to get sensitive material, and also Herschel told Rick "his people" can't use the horses anymore.

    i hate this fucking show.

I kind of hope this is real and not just wishful thinking. If it is real, this guy needs to be on the writing team.

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS

    DONT KNOW TAGS

    LOL

Episode 7: "Pretty Much Dead Already"

Episode opens with Glenn revealing the presence of the walkers to the rest of the group, who promptly proceed to freak out. Maggie becomes angry with Glenn for not keeping the secret and ruins his hat in retribution. Dale gives Glenn his trademark hat as a replacement. Maggie later makes a plea to Hershel for the group to stay. She and Glenn also have an argument about the walkers, after which they eventually admit their feelings, kiss and make up.

Rick and Hershel argue, with Hershel demanding the group leave within a week. Rick uses the my-wife-is-pregnant card, but Hershel's not persuaded. Shane also wants the group to get the hell out of there because of the walkers in the barn, but Rick uses the same excuse to cool him down. However, Shane then becomes convinced that Lori's baby is his.

Dale takes off with Shane's guns to hide them in the swamp. Shane tracks him down and demands he give the guns back. Dale points his rifle at him and threatens to shoot. However, he backs down at the last moment, since he has no wish to become like Shane: he reveals that he knows Shane shot Otis and lied about what really happened. Shane heads back to the farm with the guns.

Hershel has Rick help him and Jimmy try to fish some walkers out of a nearby pit of quicksand and lead them into the barn with snare poles. He says the group can stay on the farm if they agree not to kill the walkers. They arrive at the farm about the same time Shane emerges from the swamp and hands out guns to other members of the group.

Shane sees the snared walkers and goes berserk. He yells at Rick and Hershel as they guide the walkers towards the barn, with the rest of the group and people in the farm looking on. He pulls his sidearm and unloads it in the chest of one of the walkers, demanding to know "Could someone who's alive just take that? Why is it still coming?" Hershel has no answer.

He finishes off the walker with a headshot, grabs a nearby pickaxe and breaks open the barn door. Walkers pour out, T-Dog, Daryl, Shane, Glenn, and Andrea form a line and open fire. Once the dust clears, one more walker emerges. Sophia. Rick finally steps up next to the others, pulls his six-shooter and kills Sophia with a shot to the head. End episode.

haha, really wish hadn't spolier'd the entire episode for myself. :XD

but anyway, yeah first half-way decent episode of the year.

the ending played out really well i thought, thought the whole Glen/Maggie thing still seems super contrived.

and the scene in the woods was handled decently well too. i liked the way Dale backed down.

So, Sophia was a fucking zombie the entire time. I feel fucking cheated. They wasted almost the entire fucking season on that shit.

Fuck this show, I think I'm done with it. The episode was the best of the season, yes, but that's not really saying anything.

Also wish I hadn't spoiled it, but it almost seemed to good to be true as far as recent eps went.

Hopefully this means they'll fuck off somewhere else now and have more gay adventures with zombies

also, how the fuck did they plan on actually getting the zombies in the barn?

i'm willing to let this slide, because i don't think Herschel had thought it through that far yet, since Otis used to handle it.

i also noticed how fucking loud the ambient noises were this ep. thanks a fucking lot. >:(

I pretty much enjoyed that episode from start to finish. The acting was very good, (Wide-Eyed Old Guy actually got some decent lines!) and despite the fact that the idiot ball needed to be passed around all season in order to make it happen, the climax of the season's two most prominent storylines was quite satisfying.

My hopes aren't especially high, but I'm not quite ready to give up on this show.

I know the show isn't the best written thing on tv, but I think you guys have been waaaaay too critical. That being said, this last episode was fucking sweet. First time in a while I was left saying, "holy shit" at the end of an episode. The only thing that irks me a little is that hershel and pals seem pretty meticulous about keeping their pokédex updated, so how a little girl who just happens to fit the description of the missing one slips by is beyond me. But I'm willing to overlook that I guess, hopefully the rest of the season is as good.

Yeah man, definitely "way too critical" about something that has the ability to be quality television -- as proved by the first season -- but chooses to drag out dumb fucking plot lines for episodes at a time.

No such thing as "too critical" when it comes to TV, it's art and is subject to harsh criticism.

if this was the third or fourth episode of the season, and then more things actually happened up til the midpoint i think i'd be way less frustrated with the show.

they could have easily condensed some of the plots, completely cut out the stupid well scene (or had it actually go somewhere), et cetera.

More like proved by the first episode. The rest of the season was occasionally compelling, but often astonishingly terrible; let's not pretend there wasn't an episode where a street gang was running a damn nursing home. Basically the only reason this show gets away with as much bullshit it does is because it's the only show that's got zombies in it.

The dragging out of plot lines is annoying and cheap, but at least the writers finally have an idea of who some of their characters are (they're apparently still figuring out Carol and T-Dog).

I swear this show has zero balls. It's pretty obvious that they're gonna drag on the Herschel drama at least until the baby is born. And honestly who gives a shit about anything else thats going on?

Why the fuck did Lori go to town to get Rick, Glenn, and Herschel when that's precisely what Rick and Glenn were already doing? What was the rationale behind that? Did she just assume that they were taking their sweet time just for fun and that her presence might expedite the process?

That was the second dumbest plot point they've used this season. It's pretty clear that they did it just to have an excuse to have a pregnant Lori crash the car and be put in danger. That is some goddamn lazy-ass writing.

This show is really bad, I only watch it for the zombies (though there is a serious lack of)
The only part I have paid much attention to was the season 2, first half, last episode.

The only good part about this first (s2 p2) episode was the Clutch song at the end.

the conversations were so awkward and the situations so contrived, you can almost feel the anxiety in the actors and you can tell they're not having any fun/are in disbelief at the shit they have to act out

I don't understand all the animosity for this show. I really, really love it. With Dexter I can see where people dislike it now, and I'm content being a Dexter apologist, but I really don't understand the disdain for this one.

Note: This isn't an invitation for everybody who hates it to regurgitate why-- I'm sure it already been beaten to death in this thread.
