listened this past week to the debut, Adult, and Sports, and am looking to get into her solo stuff. direct me plox
By debut I assume you mean TJ's debut Kyouiku. Since you're already a little familiar with her, I'd say dive right into Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana for something very different. It was probably the biggest turning point in her career. Her two albums before that, Shouso Strip and Muzai Moratorium, are very raw and youthful. Heisei Fuuzoku showcases different takes on songs from those three albums as well as a Tokyo Jihen song, a cover, and a few originals. Sanmon Gossip is probably her "poppiest" album but not in the typical modern sense. Watashi to Houden is a stellar b-side/alt takes compilation, and Utaite Myouri contains a wide range of covers.
KZK was the best starting point for me because I was into weirder/more complex (derp derp...) music at the time, and didn't listen to that much pop. Basically, I was a faggot who probably wouldn't have taken to the greatness of the other albums as quickly.
You basically just gotta listen to her discog in some order or another. Main point being: don't give up in you're initially turned off or something. Adult is definitely up there as one of the easy/good starting albums. Heisei Fuzoku too imo. Those are the two albums that, in my experience, have been most well-received by the most j-phobe-ish of those I know (not that you are, but uno). But really any major studio album will work except Variety, Sanmon Gossip, or (arguably) Muzai Moratorium. They're outliers in weird ways that work lots better with more context behind them.
Man, KZK has like....infinitely more complexity behind it than Shouso Strip. Definitely something I'm gonna need to listen to a few times to really fully grasp. Even still, I probably like it more than SS.

I think I'll stay a while with TY before moving on to her solo records. There's too much goodness to be had to rush through it all.
her vocals are fucking perfect throughout the new dvd. jesus. overall it's prty good, though for some reason the first 1/4 - 1/3, despite containing some of my favorite songs, feels really empty. but it gets a lot better and carries it through to the end. it's rather melancholic, with a lot of darker songs until the end, and even the last few songs feel sort of sad for some reason. also the credits are set to this, which doesn't help lol: still, there are some very great performances in there, and like i said, her vocals are pretty out of this world throughout.
Damn. What a concert. It's so sad by the end when you realize that you'll never be in that crowd. I agree that the first bit seemed a little too chill. Well, at least in some spots. But once they get to dat rap, things stay at maximum intensity. I also thought the outfits were pretty neat this time, especially Ringo's headdresses. Also, that feel when Ringo will never turn on your overdrive for you
Fuck, I need a DVD of this just to see Ringo play drums. Also, why don't you make this chick your mathgirl?
So Tokyo Jihen's new Discovery DVD is pretty good. More attention is paid to the overall presentation and the visuals on the first track is kinda amazing!
Its not hard to do at all, but I won't be home until monday so I don't have the connection for it currently Not sure 10mb at home would be enough either actually.
Well, I don't think it's up on youtube atm. If everyone can find their own copy we could just do it like a simulisten.
BTW, I missed this one: Also, they are live-feeding their final concert to various theaters across asia, so hopefully that video eventually sees its way to a dvd. Oh, and apparently they are releasing a book with a bunch of interviews and pics of them cross dressing lol.
I listened to all of Tokyo Jihen's albums today. I think I have about 30 songs stuck in my head by now. I definitely feel like the band got so much better over time, which seems to be the minority opinion. Also, the best TJ song I never hear anyone mention has to be Boutomin.
