I'm kinda scared now when visiting this part of the forum. Guys, please stop.
I'm not talking about this thread only, but since the elections, nearly half of what's posted around these parts is ridiculous ignorance mixed with a retarded view of world economics and politics with a hint of hidden racism.
The fuck is this shit, Alabama?

Gas prices and gas-driven cars should be taxed the hell out of. The money should be earmarked to subsidizing high-speed railways, other "green" modes of transportation, "green" energy production, and, particularly in the US, re-urbanization of cities/suburbs. Maybe it's not realistic to hope for something like that, but I'm pretty sure that in a couple of centuries, people will ask "Why the hell did they not do that?".

Any person on either side of the political spectrum who blames the president for gas prices is basically an idiot. EVERYONE knows the president has no meaningful control over it.

I am trying to think this whole situation through, granted I am far from an expert but I think I have the fundamentals down pretty decently. I agree that U.S. oil production would not have any direct effect on the price of oil for reasons of OPEC mitigation. But I don't think domestic oil production is out of the question as a means to effect our own price of gasoline if sensible regulations are put into place. the way I see it, the problem with opening up oil production from offshore drilling/alaska (environmental/emergency reserve issues aside) is that since the U.S. operates on a free market, the oil producers are part of the global oil supply. This means the price will still be regulated by OPEC/global demand, not just by U.S. supply/demand.

So let's go to the doomsday scenario the GOP would love to see happen. War with Iran, straight of hormuz held hostage with nukes (el oh el), oil transport becomes very risky and prices sky rocket. Therefore gas prices raise towards $6/gallon or higher. In my opinion (maybe very ignorant opinion) some meaningful regulation and domestic oil production policies would allow the U.S. to completely control the price of its own gas. We have already reduced the supply of our oil coming from the mideast drastically and with our "backup" reserves and potential from offshore drilling / non mid-east partners we could be self sufficient for up to the next 50 years (or so I've heard estimated). The problem comes more from the fact that being part of a global community removes our power to control prices as an overal minority producer. Therefore implementation of strict export taxes on oil would "close" the market to the US and allow us to be in control of our own supply/demand. As much as people hate "government overregulation" I think they'd allow this to get by if it means avoiding paying up to $100 to fill their gas tanks. I don't think Obama in his current situation has any real power to control gas prices, but given a circumstance where its needed it could completely be done. Or I could be completely off base and have no idea what mi talking about, you tell me.

nice read and thank you for taking part.. dont fret Obama says the future is "algea" and that we can use wind power to fuel our cars. and the way to bring down the price is to just play into Saudi Arabias hands and what would work best is to bring the economy to halt so we dont need as much oil and just stop drilling all together.. I think we should just stop drilling today as we cant effect pricing anyway lol . see today Bush is gone, and he was just an oil guy, Obama hes the way.. hes so thin he can just hold a paper bag and a gust of wind can carry him from spot to spot..

on another note I love when Liberals says "what I am saying is an Unmitigated Fact" that sort of stuff is the real belly laughs.

The President may not be able to bring the price of gas down ( cough ..he can ), but he sure can drive it up.. as we see with hsi insane stupidity of taxing, the spector of more taxing and the mantra of "the oil cos are evil".. but Obama and dumb libs need a bogey man always, always need that straw man to fear

This isn't the way it works, though. If it were possible to deliver gas more cheaply via domestic production than by importing, we would already be doing it. If US producers were able to undercut OPEC prices and export at a competitive price, we would already be doing so. We simply can't however, because we cannot compete on the supply side, no matter how much we ramp up our efforts.

Even if they could, though, driving up the price of foreign gas relative to domestic only gives domestic producers incentives to raise their own prices--say in this hypothetical scenario domestic producers can produce at cost x to domestic consumers and because of legal restrictions the lowest imported oil can cost is y > x. Now since domestic producers no longer face competition at the price range between x and y, they can mark up their prices x+ε> y to capture this imaginary value that the government has imposed, at a cost to domestic consumers.

This is the general reasoning why I am opposed to any efforts to "reduce our dependency on foreign oil"--cheap foreign oil is good for our economy.

Oil is old news. We should stop using it just because it's embarrassing. We're supposed to be a technological leader, but instead we're a laughing stock because we still use an ancient power source invented in the 1800s.
