so we have an Official Wii thread I figured that this sexy ass handheld deserved one too. Post games you'veplayed/beaten/are stillplaying, what you thought of em, questions about the handheld or any games, FRIEND CODES, etc.

I also just wanted a venue to express how much the DS has been assaulting my rectum with top tier games ever since I bought a Lite the day it was released. Lately I've been playing Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin whenever I'm on the subway, and it's fucking amazing, and even better than Dawn of Sorrow. I think IGN was a little harsh with their 8.9. It's honestly THE best side-scroller I've played in many years, and the DS has a whole heap to contend in that genre. Need to finish it before I can say if it's the greatest Castlevania yet, but it very well could be.

Without getting into it too much, though the game slightly lacks in it's requirement of you to use the "control 2 characters at once" for puzzles, having the option to control one with the other side sadle, or only one at a time, you need to know when the offensive power of both is needed and how to use it. Jonathan is the melee combat dude with an array of main weapons and a wide variety of secondary attacks to choose from (equip and use one at a time). Charlotte is the magic user who's main attack is still meleeish (thrusts her spell book in front of her, and higher level spell books actually have a nice spread range of attack), but her secondary attacks are spells, of which there are many. All secondary attacks use magic points (which regenerate) and when the computer is handling one of the two characters, it will jump with you, crouch with you, and use it's primary attack to the best of its ability. You can press "R" to use the secondary attack of the character that the CPU is controlling. Even cooler still are the tag team moves which use LOTS of MP, but do massive damage, look awesome, and are quite varied in terms of benefit. The bosses are challenging, and you will find yourself dying alot (refreshingly difficult for a modern game). Then don't forget the mission component of the game aside from the main quest. You meet a guy who gives you tasks to complete where you need to find items or locations and perform certain actions, he then teaches you new abilities n shit. It's just a fucking fun, deep and rewarding game. And if you were lucky enough to grab an online preorder, you got a sexy DS game case that holds two games, a Castlevania extendable stylus, and then some other castevania 20th anniversary crap thats not really that exciting. wow, I'll shut up about Portrait of Ruin. my rating would be a 9.6. If they had made better use of the Wi-Fi mode and let two people control each character co-op style it would be an automatic 10, and if the dual character thing were used a bit better, puzzle-wise, also very close to a 10.

but before PoR, Yoshii's Island DS was awesome, and before that was Elite Beat Agents, and then Mario vs. DK 2, then Megaman ZX, then Star Fox Command, then Dawn of Sorrow, then Metroid Prime Hunters, then New Mario Bros, then Kirby Canvas Curse. and interspersed throughout these (mainly) single-player masterpieces (all of which are at least a 9 out of 10) were the puzzle/multiplayer mainstays of Brain Age, Tetris DS, Meteos, Mario Kart DS, Bust-a-Move DS etc. And once PoR is done, I will dive into FF III, and the new Kirby platformer looks awesome, as does Bomberman Land Touch with crazy 10 player single cart multiplayer, then the revamped Diddy Kong Racing early '07, then Zleda Phantom Hourglass shortly thereafter. there are just TOO MANY great games for this beautiful device. And once the DS and Wii start to be better friends, well, that's just gonna be too awesome, just a little.

anyway, my DS friend codes, let me show you them (I've sold some of my Wi-Fiable games since I had em, but here are the friend codes for the games I still have)

My roommate has a DS Lite. They're very nice and I'd like to get one, but I don't have the money. I'd like to get Yoshi's Island sometime soon as well.

Added yours for Mario Kart, but I won't be able to play online until I get home on Sunday (school internet won't let DS or Wii play online :tdwn).

awesome, I played Ouendan too way back, but only mentione dELite Beat Agents for simplicities sake. yeah, Ouendan has teh edge in terms of music and weirder top screen crazy narratives, but I had to play the US version just because new songs means a comepletely different game.

I like my DS so much, I am trying to sell my PSP. It's just gathering dust. None of my games are online and even if they were, I use WPA and from what I hear, the DS only uses WEP. I can't degrade my wireless security just to play online...

Currently, I am playing alot of Meteos...

The greatest handheld before the DS was the GBA. And the DS plays GBA games as well as its own.

The DS is the best handheld system, no question.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Lite Thread

On the train this evening I was playing some Castlevania and a dude came on and sat next to me (one of the only seats available) and says "Is that the DS?" I give him the gamer's "yeh" as im intensely involved in a boss battle against Death, but then he starts saying some more stuff, something like "I'm looking to get my son a handheld video game. He's 7, do you think he'd like a DS or a PSP?" and I immediately shut the DS and started the sale. He said "oh, I didn't mean to stop your game, sorry" but I replied "no don't worry, that's one great thing about the DS, it goes into standby when you close it, so that when you open it back up" *I open it back up* "You're right where you left off" and from there I gave the guy a concise run down of why he should buy a DS Lite for his son. I deserve a commision. There was no doubt in his mind when I was done with him. I should look into NOA's marketing division when I graduate, where would I start to look though . . .

You guys should or should not look into buying a so called or not so called Flash-card device. I do or do not have one, and it's really nice to be able or not be able to play basically every or not every game that ever came out, or did not come out.
And you can, or cannot watch or not watch movies on it, read E-Books and listen to Mp3's.... or not. I used it to watch Lost on the train home wrom work.

My fav DS game ist Phoenix Wright 1.

Unfortunatly i have too little time to play now, but i'm looking forward to holiday to check out all the new games that came out.

Haven't gotten into Castlevania yet, but seems like i need to give it another go.

Homebrew app turns DS Lite into iPod

    http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/01/04/homebrew-app-turns-ds-lite-into-ipod/

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUpAlKknlEQ&eurl="]YouTube - Nintendo DS iPod clone[/ame]

While the usefulness of such a homebrew application is definitely arguable, what is not arguable is how well it mimics the iPod interface and the aesthetical appeal of said interface. Personally, we would like to give this a try, but with memory issues and more viable solutions for portable music, we don't see ourselves utilizing this application in the long run.

    from Matt Casamassina's blog:

    I Played Halo on DS
Once upon a time, a very smart publisher came up with a brilliant idea. It contacted Microsoft and got the ball rolling on a very unlikely project: Halo for Nintendo DS. Needless to say, there were many egos involved and unfortunately because of some issues that I won't detail, the project was eventually cancelled. But not before it was completely up and running and fully playable. I know all his because I recently learned of the back-story and got a chance to play a leaked build of Halo on DS for myself.

Amazingly, the ill-fated DS version of the title plays remarkably well. Think Metroid Prime Hunters but with a Halo facelift. I had the opportunity to run through the beginning beach area and noted while playing that it looked like Xbox Halo except on DS, it was running fast, and the control was responsive. The trademark Halo music even played out of the tiny speakers of Nintendo's handheld. It is really, truly a damned shame that certain publishers couldn't make this happen because it would have undoubtedly been a huge hit and would have only furthered the popularity of DS and the Halo franchise.

Now that DS is enjoying a clear lead over PSP and the Halo franchise is bigger than ever, I'd like to see this game-that-could-have-been actually come to exist on the retail market. It's too good of an idea and the execution is too impressive to let it collect dust in the forgotten cabinet of a publisher's vaporware library.

Would you buy Halo on DS?

me: I might buy it on DS if it had good wifi and the control was pretty much like Hunters but maybe a bit upgraded somehow

^^ I read about that. I won't play Halo on the Xbox, so I doubt I'd buy it for the DS, but I would like to have seen it published to see how it would sell... As if the DS needs a PSP killer...

thought I'd bump this puppy with a little heads up to DS owners as to the titles to be looking out for this winter:

Diddy Kong Racing DS *2/5/07* (N64 port w/added online play and apparently some new characters/courses)
Pheonix Wright: Justice For All *CAME OUT TODAY* (more of the same goodness I hope)
Final Fantasy VI Advance *2/5/07* (what was FF3 in the US, ok ok it's a GBA game but you can play it on your DS, and if you havn't, you fucking should)
Wario: Master of Disguise *3/5/07* (I didn't even know about this game till a few min ago, but apparently it promises "to be a continuation of his Wario Land designs on the Nintendo DS". and that is an AWESOME thing

Hotel Dusk is coming out soon, too, looks to be awesome and take what Trace Memory did much further.

Rune Factory looks like it could be a fantastic game, too, due out sometime early this year given no delays. It's a fantasy world spinoff of the Harvest Moon series.

I read the review for Hotel Dusk in the latest EGM and it looks very promising. I love those kinds of games.

I'm currently in the middle of Final Fantasy IV Advance. It's a bit laggy, but I heard FFVA fixes this problem, so I'll probably play that one afterwards.

I've also been playing Mario Kart DS, Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow non-stop. I have a router upstairs so I've been playing Mario Kart online quite a bit.

    'Tis quite fun. :D

    God I love this emoticon. :D :D :D :D

Haven't played it, but I'm definitely buying it. Have you played Trace Memory, it seems like it will be that with vastly improved upon gameplay. Anyone that liked Trace Memory is probably going to love this game from the impressions I've got of it.

    Castlevania: Portrait of a Ruin

Excellent game, probably the single best Castlevania game I've played out of the five GBA/DS ones. You don't have to get the stylus out except once, when you're crafting your personal emblem, which I guess you could leave blank.

    Scurge: Hive

Cool little adventure game that has no need of the stylus at all. You can get it new pretty cheaply, too. I'm playing it right now and it is very addicting. The weapons setup is really nice, you'll find yourself frequently switching weapons in order defeat enemies quicker... not tedious, a well done system. If you're into action adventure type games this is a great pickup.

They're working on a FFXII game, a FF tactics game, a chocobo game of some sort(no idea), and a Cyrstal Chronicles game. Not sure when any of these are being released.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Lite Thread

Violent, Yoshi's Island wasn't THAT bad. I ended up selling it for $35 after I beat it, so I'd say it was worth well more than $5. Solid platformer with cool double screenage. Did you try getting 100% on all stages? That's where the game gets REALLY challenging, and then the "extra" stages you unlock by achieving high %'s in stages are the best stages of the game, up there with the "special" levels of Super Mario World.

Yorost, Portrait of Ruin does use the stylus if you go through the game as the Sisters after beating it normally. And playing through the game as the Sisters is fucking awesome. Almost as fun as the standard game. Attacks hurt alot and the whole game shifts to one of properly rationing your MP. The Sisters have the ability to float and move anywhere (use d-pad), so whenever you're off the ground you lose MP. When you reach ground again your MP regenerate quickly. Additionally, each Sister has a different type of magical attack using the stylus: one where you touch a point on the screen and a line of magic travels from the character to that point, and another whereby the area that you touch gets hit with a magical attack isolated from the character, but more powerful than the character-to-point line of magic. Boss battles are approached from an interesting new perspective as you need to focus on dodging enough and using enough magic while finding time to refill your MP.

Oh yeah, joeshabadoo is right, Portrait of a Ruin does use the stylus quite a bit after the primary game. I played as the sisters for awhile after beating the game, but I lost some interest as I was wishing they'd try and implement a full game and storyline in that way.

Which should I get, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney or Elite Beat Agents?

Phoenix wright if you like Text-Adventures, EBA if you like games like Dance Dance Revolution.

I picked up Hotel Dusk a few days ago and completed it yesterday. It has a really good story and is quite stylish (love the 2D animated characters, they convey much more emotion than is done in most 3D characters in recent games). Only problems I can see with the game are that the gameplay can be tedious and the puzzles are way too easy.

Anybody played Phoenix Wright: Justice For All yet? I loved the first one so much. I'd probably consider it the best DS game yet.
