All of those movies are not made by the same people... like I think Date Movie and Epic Movie are made by a different set of assholes...

The Comebacks is another one of those horrible movies...

two of the same guys were involved with writing all of them (all 4 Scary Movies, Date Movie, Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie), but they specifically directed the worst ones also (Date through Disaster). The first two Scary Movies were directed by Wayans, the second two by David Zucker (sadly, the guy who did Airplane and Naked Gun and other good spoofs back in the day). Zucker produced Superhero Movie but otherwise it has nothing to do with the other ones. The Comebacks is comepletely unrelated, other than being a shitty spoof. Then there's Not Another Teen Movie, which predates the really horrible "___ Movie" movies and is actually pretty funny.

it was half funny the first time... by the twentieth time it aired on Comedy Central I wanted to jam a pen in my urethra. But I still want to have sex with Chyler Leigh

Let The Right One In - other than one part (the guy being lft in the hospital unguarded even though they arrested him for murder) this movie is amazing and awesome. i never thought a movie with lots of blood could make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

La Moustache - dunno what the hell was going on beyond "guy shaves mustache-->no one notices-->guy goes crazy(?)", but it was well done and the part where he goes off to ride boats was deep somehow.

Well... she came in through the window, presumably if there were guards they were standing outside his room as is typical (in movies). I agree, it's a great film.

As for La Moustache, haven't seen that one yet but I thought the premise was that he shaves it and everyone starts acting totally different/thinking he's a different person or something, and that it was some commentary on how much stock we put in superficial shit when constructing our identities and perceiving others, or something like that. I guess I was mistaken.

Really good anti-war flick by Stanley Kubrick. Possibly my favorite of his anti-war movies.

What's funny about Seven Samurai is that I talked to a few Japanese friends... like guys I know who were born and raised in Japan... When I asked them if they have ever seen Shichinin no Samurai, they're all like, "Na dude... that shit's old school..."

rewatched casino royale. ****. i would let daniel craig lick my nipples. the movies doesn't drag as much towards the end as i remembered it doing. he's trhe best bond, by far. the fight choreography is ridiculously great. the script is really, really solid, too. it's a near-perfect action flick.

I wish I could love this film, but every time I watch it I can't handle how terrible the pacing is. I'll have to give it another try sometime soon. I do agree that he's an awesome Bond, and the fight choreography is fantastic.

I saw it again recently as well and I still don't get the complaints about the pacing (and Ray you're not the only person who has made them). People seem to take issue with the poker scenes but those are pretty taught in their own way, so I don't feel like they slow the movie down. they're not action scenes but they're just a different kind of intensity, and the film maintains interest.

I don't know, I guess I feel exactly oppositeity and I don't know why since most of my friends here feel the way you do. I just feel like it drags and I can't explain it any more in depth than that, as I don't have issues with the acting or anything, I'm just not interested... It's funny how differently people can interpret or feel the pacing in a film. I suppose I haven't watched it in a few months now, so I think I'll try again sometime soon here.

That's my point... but what's funny is that people of other cultures find it interesting for some reason, but they don't find the 'oldies' of their own culture fascinating... I love it.

I've seen Spartacus and Lolita. Dr. Strangelove is as far back as I go, but I've seen them all from that point forward. For some reason, I totally forgot that he'd been making movies for a while before that.

Lolita and Spartacus predate Strangelove. it goes:

    The Killing ('56)
    Paths of Glory ('57)
    Spartacus ('60)
    Lolita ('62)
    Dr. Strangelove ('64)

he did 4 or 5 before The Killing too but they're not nearly as interesting or essential.

At my 25% Asian college the anime club, which happens to be one of the biggest clubs on campus, has only one asian and he was born in the States. The grass is always greener on the other side. People will always find others cultures more fascinating than their own.

Sudden Death 1.5/5. The best thing about this is Van Damme's English got a lot better. Good for him. Not enough mindless action, and that made me sad. Basically Die Hard in a hockey rink only an American terrorist instead of German. Yeah.

If by funniest you mean most heart-wrenching ever, then yeah.

Not gonna lie, I laughed a little during that part. It's so overacted... and the howling during the fade to black is just too much. Still, it's emotional and it fucking wrecked me as a child.

Pretty disappointing since I usually love Kaufman's stuff a lot. It was still pretty thought provoking but too much was wrong with it for me to really like it.

nah, reviews are useful. you just have to find people you trust. and don't hold them as gospel, just use them to get a feel for what to expect. in this case the mixed reviews have not really diminished my enthusiasm about the film, maybe just reminded me not to have unrealistically high expectations.

i look forward to reviews from my favorite critics, as i usually share very similar opinions to theirs, and if they say steer clear of a film, then i likely will unless a few people i trust recommend it highly to me. when movie tickets cost 10 bucks a pop (x 2 if the wife comes) i don't want to be shelling out cash for a shitty movie

yeah exactly. I love movies, love going to them, and would probably go see all of them given enough time. since I'm very busy it's helpful to have some way of filtering out the stuff that's probably a waste of time. if I'm really excited for some film I'm still not going to let bad reviews deter me from seeing it. plus in a lot of cases it's just helping me determine what I want to bother seeing in theaters and what I can wait to see on dvd.

and I also look forward to reading my favorite critics because the ones I tend to gravitate to not only have similar taste (obviously) but are good writers with insightful views on film that are interesting to read.

I usually read the negative reviews first for a movie to see if I think they hold legitimate resentment towards the movie.

edit: Also I am excited for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as well.

I watched most of The Big Lebowski today, for the third or so time, but first where I really started to appreciate it. I didn't love all of it but some scenes are pure gold. so 7.5/10

Also upping my Synecdoche score to 6.5 I think. Mostly for the analysis that comes after seeing this movie. It really gives you a lot to think about, and I enjoy dissecting the complicated but mostly illogical plot enough to up the score of the movie. There's just so many freakin ways to look at this film, moreso than just about any other movie I've seen and I really dig that.

    VALKYRIE (Tom Cruise)

I just saw this tonight..dunno how many of you were interested in seeing it..but I guess I would tell you, don't expect a masterpiece. The acting was good enough, the telling of how the whole plan went down..the 1st 2 Acts was interesting, but the climax was nothing special. Also when you have American and British accents..especially then and in Germany..there's really nothing authentic about it. Had it been done in German..frankly as an Indie, I could imagine it seeming a bit more authentic.

I doubt it'll win any Awards..if it does, save for cinematography, it would be pretty baffling. The Globe nominees do get announced tomorrow though.

    5/10
