Watched Take Shelter this past weekend. Found it quite intense and interesting overall, I'm still kind of processing the ending, though. Not a movie for everyone, I guess.

yeah, the ending was kinda meh. I would have preffered an ending where the audience didn't know for sure if he was imagining the storms or if they were actually real.

amazing and one of the most daring from the french new wave, though I can't yet tell whether its fragmented nature is good or if it tries to go too many places and do too many things in the span of its 90 minutes.

also corinne marchand in this movie is possibly the most gorgeous thing to exist

Made me physically uncomfortable, I had a knot in my stomach almost the entire time. Powerful fucking film making, Paddy Considine can direct like a boss.

I thought the ending was very ambiguous. I think the final scene can be interpreted as another nightmare because it's shot in a very similar way as his previous visions/dreams.

Saw Hugo on my flight back from vacation. Loved the movie, but it sucked watching it on a plane. The sound was crap and the screen was way to small. I might need to buy this on blu-ray and enjoy it.

I didn't read any of the books, but I thought the film was well done. Loved the music, casting, sets and has the coolest end credit sequence. Initially I was worried that Jim Carrey would ruin it with his schtick but he tailored it to the role well, along with some masterful costume work.

    Heat
This one took me a while to appreciate but it gets better each time I watch it. Michael Mann is a master. The only mis-step to me was Amy Brenneman. Annoying as hell and she had no chemistry with DeNiro.

I did not take it literally whatsoever. I felt it meant that he and his family were finally on the same page, at a new level of understanding and communication, truly there for each other, etc.

There is no "convincing argument" that needs to be made. The Godfather is objectively one of the greatest movies of all time. The burden of proof is on Viz, who literally said "come at me" and thus invited the completely-correct criticism that he's a moron.

I dunno about Taco Tuesday but I'm having a go at him because he's actually comparing the two, not because one may be any better than the other. Hence my Pinnochio vs Pulp Fiction post. I enjoy both films but would never dream of comparing the two. It's pointless and idiotic.

Wow.. not a single accusation of trolling. I'm impressed, 5/8. :)

I don't feel like I was necessarily comparing them though. Pacino is in both so that's pretty much all they have in common. I think it was more me wanting a great movie to be put up there with all-time greats so I pulled The Godfather out of the air since its one of those all-time greats.

Godfather has almost been Mona Lisa'd in the movie world, hence the "there I said it" comment. Sort of in the vein of Moonmangs Half Life 2 is overrated thread in that to say something else is better is sometimes treated as sacrilege. This was more a compliment to Heat than a dig on Godfather.

Good but not great. The only thing that really bothered me was the annoying, constant Hawaiian music being played.

surprisingly engaging and human considering it's a documentary about a goofy subculture of pro-gamers. Billy Mitchell is evil and bad and should feel bad.

Specifically it's about a suburban father who loses his job and gets really into playing Donkey Kong and tries to beat the world scoreholder, rich shitstain Billy Mitchell. as with any good documentary, its much stranger than fiction. some hilarious dweebs floating around in this movie

Obviously. But I suppose a qualitative comparison has to be made if a person takes a newer crime film and attempts to put it on the This Is Great shelf next to an older crime classic.
Viz's post did make me ask myself how one would compare the two if The Godfather were the standard for elevating a film to Super Classic. But it's been too long since my last full viewing of The Godfather to lay out the elements that make it great, other than just saying "well it's got a great cast, director, cinematography, epic story, and score" which is generic and are all things that Heat has going for it as well.

mike nichols is kind of the man, even if this one isn't amazing. you have the tennis scene where the camera is trained solely on the spectators sitting on the bench (with the game going on behind the camera) and I'm just like "how in the fucking fuck did you think to do this?"

Just watched AntiChrist. Was a huge fan of Melancholia and so wanted to check it out, also in part because of its infamy. Me and a friend checked it out. Not as disturbing as I had expected. There were only two distinct cringe moments. They don't need to be named to anybody who has seen it. But there is a clear artistic intent behind pretty much everything that occurs, so I thought the movie was very good. Also, incredibly shot.

    Possibly my favorite movie.

    Collateral
Watched with commentary and it added a lot more depth to the film, listening to Mann talk about the preparation of the script and background of each character.
