Midnight Run (1988) - 7/10 - Dated, but still entertaining.
    Attack The Block - 6.5/10 - I liked the monsters/aliens.
Silverado - 5/10 - Boring, really weird casting choices (Costner, Kline, Goldblum, Glover, Cleese etc. wtf), too long. I also kept wondering what the plot was. The points given are for very good cinematics and nice filming locations.

True--Aliens has dated quite a bit and has many skippable portions, while Alien still looks and plays out as good as it did when it came out. Though Paul Reiser made an amazing asshole in that movie.

    Doubt--Acting chops/5

The Savages - 6/10 - A little lacking in substance, but saved by Philip Seymour Hoffman
Punch-Drunk Love - 5/10 - Started out kind of interesting, but the rest was a waste of time.

    Cars 2 - 7/10

This was a perfectly decent send up of spy films, nothing special but it kept me entertained and I did laugh quite a bit. I don't get the hate for the Cars films. Bring on Brave though :glee

Holy shit, this is supposed to be a very dramatic, tragic, sensitive and emotional documentary but I couldn't stop laughing my ass off. You guys gotta see it....it reminded me of that Jim Carrey sketch of the "Enviromental Guy".

    J. Edgar Hoover. 7/10
A pretty decently strong film. Leonardo DiCaprio's performance was just outstanding. The Academy has to wake up. He deserves the nomination at least.

I do, however, have a question.

    J. Edgar's mother says that there was a younger kid that was nicknamed Daffy. That is "short for 'Daffodil'." Does "Daffodil," in this context, mean homosexual?

The Change-up - 6/10 - Decent, albeit unoriginal comedy. Good for killing some time.
There Will Be Blood - 5/10 - Terrible, hammy acting, weird soundtrack. Some points for nice cinematics and filming locations.
Life During Wartime - 4/10 - Nowhere near Solondz' earlier movies. Honestly I'm kind of disappointed.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, either because or in spite of the fact that the trailer completely sells the film wrong.

Not bad--seeing it in the theater very close in proximity to other children's films really shows up how the pacing and visuals are so different in a non-American film. Very minimal in dialogue, music and location, and of course lacking in sarcasm and pratfall humor; very focused on actual story and character progression. Even though it's a Ghibli film, I noted that Miyazaki didn't actually direct it, though he was part of the creative element. Compared to other Ghibli studio films I've seen of the Miyazaki variety, it didn't have quite as much of a 'wonder' element with creatures and cuteness.

Production-wise it was awesome, and I usually enjoy odd movies and unsympathetic characters, but the this one just generally didn't sit well with me. Maybe what I perceived as hammy acting was really exactly what the characters were supposed to be like (awkward, unpleasant, cold or extremely emotional, eccentric etc.) and not bad acting. Either way, I just didn't find them and their plights particularly interesting, I guess. None of it had any emotional impact on me. Also, I'm not a big fan of exposition, but the relationship between Daniel and Eli really could've needed some, as well as the "missing" years towards the end. I really had a difficult time seeing why Daniel's mental state had deteriorated so much by the end and why he hated Eli so strongly that he eventually killed him.

That's in the first part of the movie...

I had a little bit of a hard time understanding the characters' motivations the first time I watched it 'cause they're not what you normally see in the movies but the second+ times I watched the movie it all fell into place.

What I get out of it: Daniel's big thing is power. The movie is focused on a power struggle between him and Eli. Daniel bankrupts his church, steals his oil, and kills him to win. (Daniel confessing in the church = Eli winning; Eli renouncing God = Daniel winning.) Daniel's stagnation at the end is because he's done what he needs to do to get power, and is waiting for Eli to come crawling to him.

I can see most of that. There are a few movies I dislike a lot that are filled with great actors doing their thing but in a way that makes a film stand out with a certain director's footprint. I found TWBB pretty convincing as a whole, myself. To me, Daniel's mental state has deteriorated so much over time because he's a misanthropic alcoholic who absolutely hates religion and has always resented the amount of power Eli has been able to throw around in his face. He most likely finds everyone involved in Eli's church ignorant and deluded and only tolerates them to the point that he needs them to run his business. Over time, his loneliness (he's absolutely alone), alcoholism, certain depression, stress over the changing business landscape, and most likely near-debilitating body pain has completely eroded his judgment.
    Plus what Wogbog said.

The Loved Ones - 4/10. Not bad for an Australian movie, but it suffered from underdeveloped characters, a thin, unrealistic plot and some really goofy scenes.

I seem to remember Strictly Ballroom being a good Australian movie.
Also Once Were Warriors. Get on that one.
