Previous thread was so big it sometimes would not direct traffic to proper pages. May Rathma's epic thread rest in peace.

I just watched Kill Bill for the second time, and holy crap, it's so much better now that I've seen all the films that influenced it. I honestly don't think Quentin Tarantino could make a bad film, because it's evident that he loves film making so damn much. If nothing else, the heart he puts into everything is admirable.

Inglorious Basterds is gonna kick so much ass. :hyperglee

Solid western, nothing amazing, but very entertaining.

See, this is why I like Tarantino. He's just so retardedly passionate about it all and it makes me smile.

Saw V - 6/10. Better than II and IV, not as good as III or I.

P2 - 2/10 Cliched and terrible horror movie, with no interesting or vaguely likable characters, shots, effects or... well anything really. Saved from a negative score by some phenomenal cleavage shots throughout the second half of the film.

@Zorbo: I'm surprised to see you liked Saw III. I thought it was pretty terrible to be honest, nothing on the first two, and I called the final twist about 15 minutes in. I completely gave up on the series because of it.

shit, I knew it had to happen eventually but still... did you at least archive it? there were some good reviews and film discussions in there.

But yes, this is definitely archive-worthy. There's still dozens of films I here I want to check out.

    huzzah!

anyway last night I was watching a great weird older Japanese movie called Horrors of Malformed Men. Unfortunately I didn't get to finish it but I will tonight. it's great b-movie stuff. It's got an Island of Dr. Moreau kinda thing going on, but also a mystery, a narrative structure similar to an HP Lovecraft story, and plenty of 60's exploitation movie weirdness and sleaze. A big part of the plot is the main character assuming the identity of a dead guy who looks just like him - but the thing is, all the guy's friends and family already know he died, threw a funeral for him, buried him etc. so to assume his identity the main character basically has to fake coming back from the dead and convince everyone that they were wrong. really weird movie.

see, i feel exactly the opposite. after seeing all the films he's been influenced by (and things he has just taken from other films), i like his work much less than i initially did. i don't really ever want to watch the kill bill movies again, and while his other stuff isn't bad, the only film of his i ever watch is reservoir dogs.

    This past week I've watched:

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    The Lives of Others
    Unforgiven
    Trainspotting

    All pretty good.

this would have been far cooler if they had just cut the extensive narrative crap and made it more of a fun, kick-ass flick. too much drama. for something like this, have a prologue, then a fuck ton of death and destruction.

Finally watched Eastern Promises, been meaning to for ages. Really enjoyed it. Could have done with a bit more Viggo cock though. At first thought it started off a tad slow but I realised it just added to the suspense in the end. The boss guy was such a chilling character. Also, I was shocked at how brutal it was right from the off. Quite a disturbing film.

Man such a great film. I really like the direction Cronenburg is going in recently.

Just finished For a Few Dollars More. I could watch that trilogy in any mood at any time of the day and be in my element.

Fucking essential Kung Fu movie. Would give it a 10 based purely on its importance to me and to Martial Arts movies as a whole, but it's not without it's flaws.

Pretty good mix of drama and horror, but didn't live up to it's hype. Had a nice twist at the end though.

Teeth - 6/10: Not necessarily bad, but I couldn't stop laughing sometimes, at the whole 'purity' thing, and then of course the whole severed penis bit, which just kept on coming back. :rollin

Son of Rambow - 8/10: Nice, sweet, family film with fun characters and jokes. Couldn't ask for more really.

7/10--Daniel Day-Lewis makes this film worthwhile, but other than him it was a fairly forgettable movie. I'll need to watch it again to be sure.

I try to comment on this, but everything I type just sounds like "We have different opinions, yay!" Basically it's the word "forgettable" I have a problem with.

I just saw Step Brothers. It was very on and off for a while, a fair bit of unnecessary padding, but the lulz were so hearty, frequent, and EPIC that the flaws kind of, don't matter at all.

uh yeah, it's a horror comedy, emphasis on comedy. you're absolutely totally supposed to be laughing at most of the movie. the horror elements are mostly satirical.

    no comment

that's pretty much how I feel about that movie. it was so weird and funny I didn't mind that there were a few slower parts and some padding.

The Go-Getters - zomg indie. i could relate to the part where the main guy falls in love with the slutty girl only to be reminded that she's slutty :[. 7/10

Shortcuts - a movie based on a bunch of Raymond Carver's short stories. some of the stories are great, others are ok and at like 3 hours long with 30000000000 characters its a little dense... would've been a great movie if they'd trimmed the weakest stories off. 8/10

Yeah, amazing cinematography in that one.

Darjeeling Limited, which I've seen before, but my girlfriend and I started having sex in the middle of it.

So really, the last one was Sansho the Bailiff, which was good all around, but wasn't as amazing as I had heard. The story had some generic melodramatic conventions, and the formal style didn't really put forward anything new at the time.

It was a good little story. However, it was kinda clumsy, overly long, and it never really hit that emotional core that it had the potential to. It left me wanting.

I just looked through the ratings now, and I can't help but want to talk about them, since I'm sort of a film buff, a cinema studies minor, and read film theory.
Yeah, you're going to have to watch that again; I think it's actually close to a perfect film. I did not read the book, so I don't really know/care about the adaptation aspect, but on its own, it was pretty amazing.

Can you explain your rating? I mean, some of the acting was a little melodramatic ("I fucked up! I FUCKED UP! I FUCKED UP!") and the weird-ass starman monster guy was kind of stupid, but overall the filmmaking was pretty interesting at parts, especially towards the end when the motion comes to a halt and the screen starts stretching. That sequence is a pretty great example of contemporary philosophy in film.
