You should have heard me after he dove in the box against the Aussies. Hoo boy, anyone with any Italian heritage would have been knocking my door down to kick my ass. Wasn't one of my better moments let me tell you.

Seriously though it's going to be Italy and the Netherlands that make it out of the first round. The netherlands have been stuck with "Groups of Death" before and always make it out.

OK, now I'm outraged. This goal was a clear offside, WTF? The Dutch are playing better, that's true, but an offside is an offside >:(

    lol at Italy

I'm glad Holland are winning, entertaining teams deserve to win over boring teams, plus Buffon is fucking lucky that Van Nistelrooy didn't go down at 0-0 because that was a penalty, and also at 2-0 when VN was through on goal with that brilliant through ball and his shot hit Buffon on the underside of his foot.

I'm glad that this team did so well. There was alot of questions about whether they'd do well, but with VDV back I knew our midfield would be back in form. Robben back next game should only make it better. I'm excited for things to come.

I wish got to watch this instead of looking at web updates. Congrats to the Netherlands. My Romanian cubicle neighbor thinks this threw a major monkeywrench into their chances, though.

I understood that it wasn't offside, because one of the players from Italy was out of the field, but by the rules he was still part of the game, thus making it not offside.

No, he was definitely offside. The guy off the field (Panucci?) was out of play and so couldn't be counted as a defender between RVN and the goal.

Page 102 of the Laws of the Game states:

"If a defending player steps behind his own goal line in order to place
an opponent in an offside position, the referee shall allow play to
continue and caution the defender for deliberately leaving the fi eld
of play without the referee's permission when the ball is next out of
    play."

A refereeing friend of mine is to credit for this btw, anyway

(5:26:44 PM): Now, the wording of that clearly implies that a defender leaving the field can result in an attacker being in an offside position if he's beyond the new second-last defender.
    (5:27:23 PM): yeah
(5:27:27 PM): Because if the defender leaving the field didn't place the opponent in an offside position then the entire sentence wouldn't be necessary.

So, as a supporter of the netherlands, I'm saying that he was offsides and that I agree completely with what [referee friend] said. I am not complaining, but there you have it. Offsides without question. Now, the other 2 goals, what can you say.

    Romania.

The first goal was clearly offside, but in the grand scheme of things the best team won.

Hope the Spain game tomorrow is sweet.

I'm for offside, Pannuci only lay behind the goal-line because he couldn't easily reach the sideline. He was being ourteous too, if he had known he'd be playing everyone onside, he'd have stayed on the pitch and got the game stopped.

I don't think you're active if, 1:You're not on the pitch and 2: If you are not able to do your job...perhaps he should've had a compound fracture. No goal would've been scored then.

I thought the rules state that no matter if "he couldn't do his job" as you say, he stays part of the game and so makes it onside. He didn't ask for permission leaving the field for injury, but just temporary left the field, keeping him from being inactive.
EDIT: Woah, there are many discussions of this one thing. I probably say no more, I'm far from an expert, so.
