:x I raved my ass off about these guys for months on end (this was in 04)

atleast you found them now. 1000 Thoughts Of Violence is one of the best avant-garde black metal albums ever. short but sweet review:

I've heard some of Kekal's previous albums, all very good but with kind of a bad production. Now, Kekal's brilliance can be heard in their latest album, where they push the boundaries of blending different genres even further than their more black metal oriented roots.

The band explores the big world of music in this album. 1000 Thoughts of Violence is their most diverse work to date, blending electronica/experimental, asian/oriental music, melodic progressive metal, black/death metal, jazz, and even a little technoish hip hop beats (just a small part towards the end of the track "Violent Society", don't be turned off by that hip hop comment, it's only a few seconds of experimentation with that element, they bust out with blackened thrash metal after that part too.) There's even some bells used in one song. I should mentions the solos are pretty damn good too.

Each song has an intro that catches your attention, then the song manages to transform into something new, creating an unexpected atmosphere. Every song has its soft parts and heavy parts, gives you a variety of feelings to the sound. There's so many parts to the songs that I keep coming back for more to listen for my favorite melodies.

There's a combination of vocals. You'll hear regular singing, black metal vocals, feminine like singing, soft whispering, and some weird robotic sound effect applied on some of the singing.

Just get or hear this album if you're a fan of innovative, diverse music or any genre of metal.

care to ellaboarte? I thought you'd think they were all shit since you can't process black metal through your brain. also I admit some of the bands are way better than others, but for the most part all of them have something to offer.

I love it too. I don't really have a favorite metal genre though. I go through moods of liking heavy technical stuff to weird stuff to beautiful stuff to etc.

My favorite black metal band is Emperor by far, although they've only released two amazing albums - Anthems and Prometheus. Well, three: the live album/DVD is just too good. Hard to believe they were in their early 20s when they disbanded. While most of the members haven't released anything particularly interesting since, singer/guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Ihsahn is still kicking with Peccatum and now with his solo project.
Prometheus, Lost In Reverie (Peccatum) and The Adversary (Ihsahn) are absolutely essential listening.

Among other BM bands I like are Mayhem (especially their criminally underrated industrial/progressive BM masterpiece Grand Declaration of War), Solefald, early Ulver (of course), and early Satyricon.

I've heard a few albums by Melechesh and none were that impressive. Yes, they are from Israel and you think they'd be cool (Orphaned Land) but they aren't that good.

I think so. I think I'll have to listen to them again but when I heard them 2 years ago I thought it was shit. :(

I suggest you listen to Mystic Forest, not sure if you'll dig that style, but if you do you'll LOVE them. They have alot of guitar solos too actually.

Dude, I've been a huge black metal fan back in the day, way before I discovered prog rock, but the genre itself mostly cannot be taken seriously. Most of the bands are so funny I can't listen to them anymore. And the fact that I like few BM bands doesn't actually mean I've never heard more :)

I mostly like the sort of black metal Elnimio hates. Raw, ambient, emotional and dark as fuck. Anyone here heard of Sort Vokter?
