Thomas' hit on Sedin was beautiful. I could loop that replay for hours.

Thorton's reaction to his game misconduct was also awesome.

I thought the Bruins were getting lit up for most of that game. Even when they tried to be more physical, I still felt like Vancouver had the edge in that department. Lucic needs to step up big time, and Seguin will have to step up and be an impact player like he was in the conference finals after disappearing in the first 2 games of this series.

Losing Horton is a huge blow to the Bruins, as he was one of their few legitimate scoring threats.

It can't have impacted their scoring TOO much losing him. I mean Jesus, they scored 8 goals in two periods without him.

Boston with Horton: 2 goals in 7 periods.
Boston without Horton: 8 goals in 2 periods.

    hmmmm

That was the closest 8-1 game I've ever seen.

It was definitely a late hit, and 1 game would have been fine, but 4 games for Rome is outrageous. They handed out the punishment based on the fact that Horton was badly injured, and not on the play itself, which is just wrong. Simple as that.

4 games was a little harsh. I think 2 games would have been fair.

philly gets bryzgalov's rights until deadline, except they have like 700K in cap space, SELL SELL SELL! hahaha. plus bryz apparently wants to be paid top player numbers, i'm thinking 7 Mil to match Richards.

Hey, remember when the Flyers got Nabokov's rights last year? That really panned out.

It is, clearly, a make-up suspension. 'you guys lost a real valuable player, eh? well, now I guess we should even it out...'

Although on the team importance scale, Rome hardly measures up.

It's silly to trust a GM's comments to the press, but Holmgren seems pretty serious about having "a top goalie" so I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the necessary moves to sign Bryz. I'd love it with 1) Bob having a same-language steady mentor and 2) Pronger and O'Donnell having played with Bryz on the '07 Ducks championship team.

To be fair, Philly acquired the rights to Nabokov last year and still walked away when Nabokov asked for too much. Of course, I think Nabby's rights only cost them a 7th. Based on last year though I think they'd rather lose a pick for nothing than get stuck with a bad contract.

But keep in mind the cap is supposed to be 63M next season.

Edit: and teams can be up to 10% over the cap until next season starts, so they wouldn't necessarily have to clear space right away.

Howard had a great playoffs. Nothing but 1-goal games against San Jose and absolutely dominated Bryzgalov in round 1.

Although, the goals in this game were more Luongo's fault than most of the goals in game 3. Game three was mostly the defense just collapsing.

Flyers fans are quite used to Holmgren throwing away draft picks, believe me. I really really don't want him to put them over the cap and then be forced to make another shit trade a la Gagne.

LOL at the announcers equating Burrows slapping a stick out of Thomas' hand with Thomas slashing Burrows in the back of the fucking knee.

Meh, I think Luongo is a good goalie. I never saw the third period but the only soft goal was Ryder's. That one had no excuse. But the other two were giant defence errors.

Also, save percentage does matter. What better metric is there to judge a goalie by?

I gotta agree with Bacong here. Luongo sucks, and GAA is pretty meaningless.

If only there were sabremetrics in hockey. Save % is like fielding %. Not an objective stat.

Save % is not like fielding percentage at all. How do you figure? Fielding percentage does not take into account the balls you don't get to. You can have a good % and still be shitty defensively, because you have no range.

Quality/difficulty of shots, breakdowns in defense leading to scoring chances, goalie positioning, etc. I know you are smart enough to know that save % is not the ultimate barometer for goalie play.

I'd say save% is better than fielding%, but it's still far from perfect. Ideally you'd have it broken down based on the quality of the scoring chance... which would be rather difficult to define.

Save percentage is a good place to start.

Shot-adjusted save percentage is probably the best single metric for evaluating goalie performance.

I didn't say it was, I said it was important. There are a limited number of statistics available to judge goaltenders, and save percentage happens to be the most worthwhile one, although I've never seen this shot adjusted save percentage.

I think on the whole it's pretty safe to say that goalies who have a good save percentage are among the best goalies in the league. Fielding percentage is quite different.
