It's difficult to form an opinion on the song without the context of the album. I thought Bedlam was going to be shit when they released Illyena, which i hated at first. Now it's one of my favorite albums and I love that song.
I was just listening to Bedlam last night, and it still holds up. One of my favorite albums of theirs. Also, the new song is pretty sweet. It took a little while to grow on me though.
1. De-Loused in the Comatorium 2. Frances The Mute 3. Amputechture 4. Octahedron 5. The Bedlam In Goliath I have high hopes for the new album and i really enjoy "The Malkin Jewel"
From Someone who has the album already...Hype! "After one listen, I would have to say it's a lot better than the past few releases.""Dyslexicon is really cool. The opening track The Whip Hand is fun too. I really enjoy this a lot more than their past 3 records. Probably the first TMV I'll continuously come back to since Frances."
First listen - it's good, I guess. A lot of tracks kind of just flow into one another and don't really stand out to me. However, I liked everything I heard better than the last disc, which sucked IMO.
It leaked after my second run through of all 5 of their albums this month! Time to go walk the dogs n listen.
This really does sound like one of omar's solo records the more I listen to it. it's definitely better than Octahedron though
Yeah I got a big solo record vibe from it. Reminds me a lot of the stuff he did with Ximena. Not really surprising though since he's said there isn't a difference between the two. First impressions: Cedric doesn't belt it like he used to on the chorus of Aegis. (Compared to something like Inertiatic ESP. Song still gives me chills big time, though.) Dyslexicon is damn cool. Trinkets Pale of Moon/Vedamalady/Noctourniquet are a gorgeous trio of songs. Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sounds is very pretty and also Cedric's lyrics are really cool when they make sense. Kinda wish I hadn't listened to the live versions of the songs that were on youtube a bunch. Oh well.
on first listen, everything sounds pretty good. didn't like the first track a ton, but the second was awesome.
Molochwalker should have been the first single I think. That's the first song to really jump out at me so far, but I'm enjoying most of it so far. Pretty surprised, actually.
Fuck, so excited, been listening to TMV and Omar's solo stuff. I was gonna come in and post about how goddamn amazing Xenophanes is--would recommend to anyone who can't get into TMV because of they think they're self-indulgent with all their meandering electronics and stuff. So high-energy When is this legally available?
I'm not really digging this yet. Maybe I'll warm up to it later, kind of like I did with Octahedron (which I really love now), but right now I feel like each song is a bit short and doesn't really go anywhere.
I was gonna say there seems to be a newfound dub influence on the record and then I remembered De Facto existed so I guess it's not exactly new.
Fucking love Noctourniquet. Empty Vessels Make The Loudest Sound is my favorite song; Dyslexicon is my least favorite. But the whole album is so strong. I'm getting addicted to it.
or maybe it has something to do with that this time mars volta took more than a year to put a new album out.
NO ONE LEFT TO SAVE 'CAUSE NO ONES AT THE WHEEL Title track and Zed are such a good way to end the album. I dunno if I like Deantoni's drumming for TMV. It's fiddly and jarring, which takes away from catchyness. Other stuff that I wasn't a huge fan of at first, like the synths in the chorus of The Whip Hands and the first half of In Absentia is starting to grow on me though.
really love the direction they've took here, I love pretty much everything sans octa (it's got some redeeming aspects), hated the malkin jewel when it first came out (but now in context it's warmed to me greatly), but I'm absolutely loving the drum/electronic focus, structures and progressions, not sure how I feel about vermalady or trinkets pale of moon but everything else is great, molochwalker is crazy shit
I think I the reason I hate this is how meandering and ORL-solo-esque it is. When TMV actually takes time to put out an album, I thought "oh maybe it will be more focused". But nope, just like most ORL solo releases, it sounds like it was shat out in one take with no edits or cuts or thought put into it at all. This could easily surpass Octahedron as their worst album. How disappointing.
Why do people keep saying they took their time with this? Omar said it was already recorded last year. The delayed release was the record company's fault and scheduling with recording Cedric's vocals. In 2010, the music was already written.
Yeah, and Omar made a bunch of solo albums since the last TMV. Other than In Absentia I wouldn't call it meandering. But maybe that's just in comparison to their other stuff, where the meander-levels are pretty high.
lol people complaining about this album. "it meanders too much" "it's too noisy" um, you do realize this is the mars volta right? that's the kind of music they make for christsake
Except it doesn't say anything about the record company and Omar makes it sound like Cedric is to blame.
