Don't Sarah and Blackcat live in TX? That's not exactly what I'd consider "The South." Although I guess it's still not that far.
Honestly though, don't most people refer to "The South" as the east coast southern states, and then states like Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas get lobbed into Midwest states. I realize Texas is, quite literally "South," I'm just.... you know what nevermind.
"The South" traditionally referred to the states you mentioned probably because the middle-southern states, like Texas, weren't owned by the U.S. yet. I tend to think of states west of Texas as the southwest, an independent geographical area, though.
