    Honestly though, don't most people refer to "The South" as the east coast southern states, and then states like Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas get lobbed into Midwest states.

    I realize Texas is, quite literally "South," I'm just....

    you know what nevermind.

    "The South" traditionally referred to the states you mentioned probably because the middle-southern states, like Texas, weren't owned by the U.S. yet. I tend to think of states west of Texas as the southwest, an independent geographical area, though.
