It still remains to be seen, and I'm one of those guys that tends to fall into the 24p camp. Although I obviously don't presume to know more than these professionals, and if anyone can make it work it's Peter Jackson

Isn't it taxing to use film and shoot at 48fps? I mean, I'm sure Peter Jackson has the touch (and money) to not worry about it, but I can't imagine it becoming the standard compared to shooting higher fps on digital.

how does it work with projectors? do theaters need fancy new digital projectors to make use of the higher resolution and stuff? I was under the impression that almost all theaters use film projectors because digital still can´t compare.

(I don't know about this stuff).

Actually, many theaters now use digital projection (not sure of the exact figure but I'd venture to say at least half of the theaters in America have them now) , and digital projection presents a clearer image than film.

I read Rathma's post wrong, when he said "future of film" I thought he meant film the physical stock, not film as in cinema.

You mean compared to the book? I haven't read it. This basically looks like a new LOTR with the story of that hobbit and more dwarves

that looks much closer to the LOTR movies than expected, I reread the hobbit a while ago and there is a lot more fantasy out-of-this-worldy stuff compared to the lotr books so I was very curious to see if they went for a movie which was more light hearted, childish, fun compared to the lotr movies.. but apparently they are keeping it very close to the lotr movies and I'm not sure I like it.

This looks great, but... I really wish they had released this first and then LOTR. :( I dunno, there's just a weird feeling seeing characters that I know are dead or gone in movies that have already taken place. Like I've already seen Golum's epic finish in the story, and it's just anticlimactic to see him again at an earlier time. I dunno, first world problems etc...

    Basically what Catfishman said.

On the upside, LotR 2.0 would still kick tons of ass.

Yeah, the Hobbit definitely has more of a fairytale quality to it that I really think needs to be preserved. I don't like the idea of the Hobbit movies making frequent callouts to LOTR, but given that people like Galadriel and Frodo are supposed to make appearences, I have a feeling these are going to be littered with LOTR references which is a shame b/c The Hobbit is and should be a pretty self-contained story.

I really wish Del Toro had directed just so these movies would actually seem different in tone to the LOTR trilogy. These seem like they're going to feel exactly the same.
