Act II has the most emotional weight and substance of any of their albums, while I would say Act III has the least. That of course being super subjective, it probably would explain a good deal of the difference in opinion between myself and Nolan.
http://thedearhunter.com/dates/?PHPSESSID=27f2db8cd4b37e30db49c5734953a5fd some new spring and summer tour dates bros. I'm going to Bottom of the Hill in SF, April 18th. Also I didn't realize they were doing Coachella, lol. Good for them, they need the exposure.
speaking of that show ^^, here's the set chronological because order is hard His Hands Matched His Tongue The Church and the Dime Red Hands (closer) Black Sandy Beaches (Casey solo) The Thief He Said He Had a Story Filth and Squalor This Body We've Got a Score to Settle Echo A Sea of Solid Earth (+ Pink Floyd "Time reprise of Breathe", to lead into the next song which was "Home") Things That Hide Away The Inheritance (only song on the set that was new to me) Mr. Malum Home Lost But Not All Gone good times. got to chat with Casey and others afterwards. He mentioned that after his touring stuff finishes in the summer, he's going to go into the studio to start making another record.
Saw Casey's solo performance last week at Berklee. Going to see The Color Spectrum complete show tomorrow (er, later today). Pretty excited about it. Apparently it's going to be filmed. Casey's voice was incredibly strong last week. I had goose bumps multiple times, and was literally tearing up during "Home" (not even sure why). This has the potential to be an incredible show.
He said there will be "surprises". I'm guessing that means guest musicians. Manchestor Orchestra for Red? Real strings for Violet? Guess we will have to wait and find out. Not sure how many people this place holds, but I'm guessing 300 to 400 max. I think this shit is going to be intense.
I was thinking about this the other day. How do you guys read/hear "The Dear Hunter?" Is it the hunter who is dear, or the hunter who hunts dears?
I don't think of it as either lol. I've just detached it as "the name of this band I like that was the name of the character in the story they used to tell"
Just recently got into these guys I keep thinking Beardfish when I listen, but I love it. TDH is quite the talented group of arrangers. Very early Pain of Salvation-esque in compositional form, minus Daniel Gildenego
The show was intense. The band seemed pretty nervous early on and the mix wasnt great. Both of those things improved after the first intermission. Violet and White were immense. Crowd was super into those. Casey was clearly exhausted, but still powered through. He was clearly moved by the whole thing and everyone in the crowd singing loudly to help him through was incredible. "Home" was the highlight. Three string players for indigo, violet, and white. The guy from Naive Thieves providing his vocal parts on various songs as well as Andy Hull on Red. After White and Violet I'd say Green and then Blue were the best. I was so happy for Casey. Got a ten min standing ovation at the end. I shook his hand after and said "great job" wish there was more I could have said to express the proper gratitude but that was it.
Cool! So probably overdubs up to the first intermission on the dvd then? Was the place packed, how many people? I hope it was.
The place was definitely full. I'd guess there were 400 to 500 people, but I couldn't see up into the balcony. There were some sloppy parts during black, but otherwise probably not many overdubs. I hope they leave Caseys vocals towards the end because the fact that he was "struggling" added to the atmosphere and power.
is that when he tries to hit the notes, but turns his voice into this demonic hardcore scream thing? I like those.
He had a couple of those, but he hit all of the important stuff on White. He took a couple of lines off to have the crowd sing, but mustered up enough energy to hit the big stuff. Some people in the audience interrupted during green because apparently someone was going to propose. Casey was like "can you just hurry up and do it. We are kind of in the middle of something." Then after the proposal he's like "great, now here's a song about love falling apart."
yeah honestly i'd say casey hit his stride (shed the nervousness) by the third song of black. agreed re: home being a highlight. it was also really fun how green started off with so so much energy and beach balls and stuff (green isn't a particularly energetic ep, either, but it totally worked). but there were so many amazing moments i can't begin to list. i'd venture to say that that was the best show i've ever attended, both in str8 up quality and (more surprisingly) in fun... never thought i'd have such a blast at a fuckin' seated venue :P but the band's and crowd's enthusiasm were, like, palpable. i do kinda wish the audience had been less annoying; seemed disrespectful especially b/c it was being recorded.... (grumpy old man at heart) but yeah goddamn. i've always been a huge color spectrum fan (when i saw them with anthony green and a couple people on fb complained about too much tcs i was like "wtf i know the acts are fucking amazing but there's no such thing as too much tcs") but this really brought it alive. like, indigo & violet are so incredibly immersive live. the vox edp on green & blue, which are astonishing enough recorded, were just unbelievable. i wouldn't have thought i was capable of walking away w/ more appreciation for the album, but fuck if i didn't.
LOL! Was the song "Crow and Cackle?" Most I know start out thinking that one's the most beautiful love song ever written until they really hear the lyrics and are utterly soul-crushed by its sadness. Great, GREAT, song, but not anything close to something I would have used as a proposal backdrop.
well, since The Deer Hunter actually exists, and it's a hunter that hunts deers I relate it as a hunter who hunts dears can't wait for the DVD I hope they make it BD though..
started this tonight. unsure if the best listen is for each individual ep or as a whole. going for the whole thing. on violet. pretty solid so far. thought it stared pretty weak. middle was really good (feeling a fleet foxes vibe). it's hit-and-miss, but good.
glad you finally tried it IMO the best EP is Yellow by quite a stride. kind of funny actually that the poppiest songs he wrote for the record ended up having the most depth and staying power. they feel a lot more genuine than some of the genres he "forced" on other EPs. Misplaced Devotion is probably in my top 3 Dear Hunter tunes.
so do you guys view this as one huge album or as a collection of eps? for some reason that has a bearing on my viewpoint of it
Pretty much this for me, every song on Violet is amazing, Mr. Malum is the best of the bunch and if I had to name my favorite TDH song I would propably say Mr. Malum. I view it as a collection of EPs. I've listened to the whole Color Spectrum on one listen maybe twice, and while I really liked it, it's a bit too much to listen a 2½h long album on one listen. I prefer to listen one or two, max three, EPs at a time.
i think i like black and red the best currently, but ive also listened to them the most, so who knows i listen to 2 or 3 EP's at a time
Im so glad I discovered these guys 2 weeks ago. Theyve been on CONSTANT rotation and I have basically everything they have released memorized. I love this band SO much.
to be fair to all the new material and give every song a chance to digest, I listened to it "start to finish" around 7-8 times when it came out, then once I knew most of the stuff pretty well, I've just been skipping around, playing 1-2 eps at a time, shuffling songs, whatever. I've played Yellow about twice as much as the rest, for instance.
The Dear Hunter will enter the studio this summer to record the follow-up to The Color Spectrum. The album will be released in early 2013, and released on our new imprint label "Cave & Canary Goods", in conjunction with our friends at Equal Vision Records. The still-untitled album will be written "straight from the heart" and produced by Casey Crescenzo & Mike Watts. http://thedearhunter.com/2012/06/the-dear-hunter-new-album-announcement/
d'awww, glad it will be "straight from the heart". maybe that will be genuine enough for Bacong. anyhow, looking forward to it.
Yeah, I love TDH, but TCS isn't settling with me yet for some reason... I should probably just listen to it more, but I always just kind of choose not to for whatever reason.
