    old thread: http://www.fiveeightforums.com/the-anime-manga-thread-t340/index.html

I felt like it was time for a reboot, 5000+ posts was a good ride but its gotten to the point that its so big its limiting discussion from new people. So everyone feel free to peruse the old thread for all the old recs and such.

Anywho, I've been rewatching evangelion for the 4th time and I'm remembering why I love that show so much... it has such great characters.

I watched the first 4 episodes of Evangelion today. Then I switched over to a different animu.

And on top of that I still have to finish Serial Experiments Lain. I don't like juggling around so much animu at once but I always end up doing it anyway.

    Ps. Kurozuka is awesome.

I usually refuse to watch more than 2 shows at a time, and then they are usually of very different types one being more serious and the other being a more lighthearted show. If I juggle too many shows I end up dropping them and never revisiting them even if I enjoyed what I saw.

I don't see how the size of the thread limits people from posting, and I'm generally against the whole idea of making it more difficult to look back through older posts in the thread.

you dont see how 5,000+ posts and 136 pages stops new people from joining in? and it isnt harder to look through old posts... the old thread didnt go away or anything.

Rathma: Kurozuka's a good show so far. I was kind of nervous about it around episodes 2 and 3, but I'm becoming more confident that we'll get some good plot development out of it.

I'm getting the Baccano! starter box for Christmas. You guys are missing out. :D

    Is anyone watching ga-rei zero?

My brother keeps raving about this series, I'm planning to start it once schools over.

    Holy shit new thread.

I'm still slowly getting through Gurren Lagann. It's enjoyable, but I still don't get the hype.

It's actually better than I was expecting it to be. The CG monsters look awful, but there's some good plot going on. You probably won't see the twist in episode one coming. Make sure you get unedited versions, though. The censoring is really bad.

Dev: We're watching it in club next semester. I've heard everyone rave about this series, but I wasn't too keen on it from what I saw.

I don't like this change! Not one bit! This thread will be made up of the same crowd anyway. Just you watch.

Anyway I haven't been watching anything recently even though I really want to. School has been a limiting factor for me right now. I've got a bunch of great stuff on my HD that I will sink into once break starts: new and old junk. It doesn't really matter for the new stuff though, because awesome shows like Hyakko are being subbed so godamn slowly. I also ordered the first three volumes of Black Lagoon and the second volume of Sunshine (Hidamari, duh) Sketch that I will finally get to read when I get home. :D

I also like how this thread has begun with Evangelion. AGAIN. I wonder if it is celebrated so much for being such a great show (apparently) or because the selection of anime was more limited for Western viewers when it came over here, and people just kinda latched on to it as a result. Though I suppose it is popular in Japan as well. Anyway, there's no way I'd place it in my top list.

Its popular because its good. It also did a lot of things that had not been done in the anime world before, many of which are still very rare. Believably flawed characters anyone? :p

Anyways, Im almost all the way through Hidamari Sketch x365, I don't like it quite as much as the first season but its way better than the special episodes.... guh the first special was fanservice overload. Maybe shinbo should just stick to 13 ep series the sequels havent been as good so far.

I liked x365 more than the first season. It had me laughing and hnnnnnging more this time around. Also, they made some secondary characters a bit more prominent, like the awesome Principal and Natsume.

Spice and Wolf was very good. I suggest watching it all.

and I agree about the secondary characters slacks, i love the principle especially. I just get this odd feeling that the show has started to pander more in the second season... it might just be me though but ive noticed more fanservice and the like and i dont want it in a show of this type.

The only fanservice I can think of are bath scenes, but the first season was full of that as well. The first season also had plenty of Yoshinoya dressing up. Probably more than x365 did. But I agree. Hidamari Sketch is so great because it is both hilarious and pure at the same time. I'd hate to see that change.

I've been reading Sundome (NSFW) the last couple nights. It's a pretty sweet series about a high school girl who makes this high school guy her slave. Of course no one except me would enjoy it.

Actually it's pretty shitty except for the scenes with the main girl and the main guy, but whatever.

There was actually a Touhou DVD released during the last winter Comiket, and it was terrible. This one looks terrible too, but not as terrible. It has well-known VAs as well, which I found odd.

i was probably overreacting a bit on the fanservice for x365, its just that the first few episodes had a more than normal and they followed the specials which were pretty disappointing in that regard. The last few eps of the show have been excellent.

Interesting. I'm thinking about which shows they'll be picking up. I definitely think Seto no Hanayome, Soul Eater, and Reborn! will get picked up, and maybe stuff like Nabari no Ou. They might even take the chance to pick up Full Metal Alchemist 2 before it airs.

edit: Skip the 5 minutes of useless bullshit, or read the MAL thread: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=57634

i lost my external hd power cord so until I find it I'll have to put some of the series I've been dabbling in on hold. I'm pissed as I haven't had time to really get into a series until now (winter break) and I can't even watch the ones I needed to finish. Any new greats from this season or the last? the newest series i've watched was dennou coil so I've been kind of out the loop.

I'm not an anime guy at all, but all this talk of Neon Genesis Evangelion inspired me to download the full series, which I've almost done. Watched the first two episodes and it seems promising. I also heard a lot of comparisons between it and the game Xenogears, which I really love so I hope to see a lot of good mindfuckery, and I'm sure I will.

Xenogears was obviously influenced by NGE, that said IMO it cant really come that close to the depth of NGE. I don't mean that as a knock on Xenogears, just different mediums and different stages of their development. Im sure you will enjoy it.

My question as well. Id watch the 3rd season if Domu animated it, but the main question is whether i should suffer okawari to catch up

so I marathoned gay-rei zero up to 10 yesterday. Good series.

and speaking of gay, whats up with all this homosexual stuff in anime lately. I thought the Japanese were like the right wing christian nuts when it came to gay people.

Hm, I love NGE, but I actually think the story in Xenogears is more complex. I don't deny that NGE delves into actual religious parallels, while Xenogears mostly name-drops religious elements without a deep context of their meaning, but the story in Xenogears seems a lot more complex. I mean, there are a lot more things going on. The story is pretty much built on the idea of allowing the viewer to become comfortable in their understanding of it, only to throw a curveball that forces re-evaluation of everything that's been presented thus far. They do that many, many times throughout the course of the game.

This is sort of off-topic, although I think Xenogears can be discussed in the context of anime as the art and style of story is definitely consistent with the discussion.

Also, NGE is still one of the best animes ever, so you should definitely watch it.

but focusing just on the story of NGE is missing its point, the depth is in the character studies.

It is sad how the second (and probably 3rd) season of minami-ke was mistreated, i dont know WTF they are doing sticking with this studio when the first one did soooooo much better. God damn it the show isnt about fanservice its about making a small boy crossdress in hilarious ways! :p
