Hey, that gives me an idea. Disney could do to Sweeney Todd like they did with Notre Dame de Paris. You know, Sweeney is all sad because his wife was taken away, and comes back and re-opens a barber shop. Maybe he shaves deer(you can kill deer in Disney movies) or something and they make venison pies and then his wife comes back and everybody lives happily ever after, except for Turpin. He dies in a fire or something(you can burn bad guys in Disney too). Wouldn't that be sweet?
So, fucking awesome movie. I saw this back to back with Juno. Both so good and so different. I don't know which one I should see with my girlfriend, she'd love both
I'm oblivious to obvious movie plot twists, and also never saw (or even heard of) the musical before this, so I got suckered into everything. It's OK, it was satisfying
EDIT: I see now that the second "it" was not referring to the film itself. My bad. I too am "oblivious" to obvious twists. Or, more accurately, I don't spend my time during movies trying to guess what will happen. So my criticisms have nothing to do with it being predictable. More that the singing was bad, the murders were repetitive/uncreative (somebody needs a lesson from Tiffany the Doll on how to spice things up a bit), and both Johnny Depp and Tim Burton were way too into "being Johnny Depp and Tim Burton." EDIT: By far the best part of the movie was Sasha Baron Cohen. Hilarious.
yeah, the twist was predictable, especially halfway through the movie when they add a bunch of color. side note: the young guy that wanted to elope with the daughter, he totally looks like a young david gilmore.
Haven't seen yet. Having heard the soundtrack, musically this bites bigtime. Does the acting make up for the bad singing??
Dude, you are so negative about any vocals other than the original operatic/theatric vocals. Yes, the acting is very good, but you're still missing the point of this movie. IT'S A FUCKING MOVIE. NOT A FUCKING MUSICAL. GET THE FUCK OVER IT.
The original vocals were not operatic. And it's actually a fucking movie musical. If it was not a musical it would not have singing. I don't care that the singers don't sound like Angela Lansbury(not a great singer) or Len Cariou. But Helena sounds bored out of her mind. Johnny sounds ok, but honestly I think whoever coached the vocals did a poor job. They get all of the notes, but there's no expression in their singing whatsoever. It's like they were too concerned about sounding pretty than portraying the characters they play. The tempos are slow. The orchestral score is dumbed down from the original score. Again, I'm not casting any judgement on the film(haven't seen), but the soundtrack is boring as hell.
The soundtrack itself did seem rather dull, but I was totally enthralled by the music whilst actually viewing the movie.
Umm, I would say the script was about 80% sung, so casting it with entirely untrained singers got old after a while.
Haven't seen this movie yet, but I'm curious what you thought of the Phantom of the Opera movie, in terms of music.
It was a pretty good movie.. a few flaws here and there... didnt really want to hear Johnny Depp sing. But everything else was good. And the rest of the music was great.
I thought most of the singing was average to good, with the best performance being the young boy. He was excellent. Please do not misquote my post.
Emmy Rossum was alright, although I prefer a Christine with a bit more operatic voice(she is supposed to be an opera singer after all). My favorite Christine is Rebecca Caine(check out her cadenza at the end): [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoPD_g2b714"]YouTube - Rebecca Caine - Think of Me[/ame] The Phantom himself though was probably one of the worst singers I have ever heard. Minnie Driver was shrieking, and overall I hated the movie. Probably the worst stage-film adaptation of a musical I've seen, and quite possibly a worse film than Batman and Robin(if that's possible). Also what's with the guitar solo in the title song?
Seen the musical, loved the musical, saw the movie, loved the movie Incredible film, and i do say i was kind of surprised at how bloody it was, haha. Fuck anyone who thinks the music sucks, cause its sososoososos good.
Funky Drummer might not have worded it correctly but he pretty much hit the nail on the head. I would much rather have good actors than good singers. Sondheim himself wanted to "Make it the movie, and not merely a film of the stage musical." Having over-the-top singing would have butchered the whole film.
I'm baffled at the mixed reaction in this thread to the movie. I saw it the other night and it was easily one of if not the best movie I've seen in theaters in maybe the past year. Oh, and I thought the singing was fantastic, and even if you didn't think it was top notch, to say it was a bad movie based on that is totally missing the point.
bump, mostly just to reiterate how brilliant Sondheim's score is and how great it sounds with the full orchestra in the movie. also, I like the singing.
I felt the same way, but I was happy to see the great response that it received from critics and curious viewers. I remember getting worried upon initial release. The marketing made didn't make it look like a musical. I was scared some teens would see the opening 10 minutes and scream "WTF?!" right behind me. Thankfully, there was none of that during my experience. I've gotta watch this again. It deserves another viewing around this time of year.
schwans does I actually kind of liked it, which is saying a lot considering I'm not a big fan of musicals. or at least I really really have to be in the right mood to watch them or else they come off as really lame and frustrating. the same is true of this, I caught some of it on tv recently and couldn't sit through it. but when I'm in the right mood it's tolerable and even enjoyable.
I loved it. Loved the music, the acting, Johnny Depp was brilliant as always. One of my favourite movies in a long time, and I'm glad I got it on Blu-ray. Actually watched it twice in two days. Only negative point is it dragged on a bit - but not to the extreme, so that's okay.
This movie was so confused. Tim Burton clearly had no interest in the music whatsoever, which would be fine if he was making a movie with no singing in it, but he clearly made no effort to even understand the musical aspects of the movie. I don't think he treated the work with any degree of respect either, since he basically just turned it into another maudlin, pseudo-gothic Tim Burton film.
I liked it. The music, the dark theme, etc. Burton did a magnificent work with the story. Probably a 4/5
Exactly! The music felt like it was tacked on as an afterthought, and yet singing dominated like 80% of the dialogue.
The movie is probably Tim Burton's 2nd best film. Just watched it last night, amazing. 1. Scissorhands 2. Sweeney 3. Beetleguece
I'm the musical director for an upcoming local production of this. It's great being able to have a copy of the score (although it's for the 9-piece adaptation and not the full broadway version).
The first time I saw it (at theaters) it didn't really hit me that much but then I got more into Sondhiem stuff (including the stage production recording of ST) and fell in love with it. I LOVE every song, the melodies are beautiful (My Freinds and Pretty Women especially) and Epiphany is just downright incredible. I like the orchestrations more in the movie score and prefer to listen to the movie soundtrack, although the OBC recording singers obviously pwn the movie ones. Man I wanna watch it again.
