So the updated Cut Ribbon pretty much sucks. Listening to it, though, I'm inclined to say that the original demo pretty much sucked as well and I just had bad taste at the time. I'm glad it wasn't included on the album.
Which outtakes? I'm up to 13 bonus tracks. The demos I could take or leave, but some of the bonus tracks are pretty alright. Nothing's really as good as the bonuses that Insurgentes had though.
The demo version of Raider II is pretty interesting. Very different vibe to the track. Much less King Crimson-ish, and more dark and twisted sounding.
New interview, largely about GFD: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/inte...cupine_tree_was_gonna_be_a_one-off_thing.html
That's pretty crazy that people are sending death threats because Mikael made an album in a different style. I think you have to be a special kind of delusional to do that sort of thing.
Great interview, but the thing that bugs me about SW is that he should be sucking the Internets cock instead of blaming it (partly) for the demise of music. Seriously, if it were not for the internet they would't have anywhere near the fanbase they do now.... just like every other non-mainstream band for that matter.
I finally bought this and heard disc 1 last night. Had to hit the sack instead of putting on disc 2. Man, Postcard has to be one of the saddest songs... not the blatantly sad lyrics as much as the music itself. Naturally I think it's great.
After giving GFD some time to sink in, I think I can safely say that I prefer Insurgentes way more. Not that GFD is bad, but I think the music on Insurgentes is more unique and that makes me prefer it more.
Steven's solo work is so much better than PT's last 2 albums, I wouldn't mind if he just went solo from here on, since both sound pretty similar, but he's not limited by pre-conceived notions of what PT is when working alone
This has been spinning in my car lately. Disc 1 is p much phenomenal from start to finish. No complaints. Disc 2, though....apart from Belle du Jour which has such an extreme Secret of Evermore vibe it's pretty forgettable. Raider has got to be one of his most boring, needlessly long and most blatant Crimson-ripoff ever. It's a King Crimson song from the Lizard phase that King Crimson would've never released.
I love Raider II to death. It seems a bit all over the place, but that is part of its charm. It is like a loose jam, and the song just gets stronger and stronger as it progresses. Track One is basically three ideas jammed into four plus minutes, but it works. I still love this whole CD to death, but I would agree that four of the five best songs are from Disc 1: Sectarian, Deform to Form a Star, No Part of Me and Remainder the Black Dog.
Postcard and Index are both great, but those others are just better. I dig the Clockwork Orange feel of Index.
I'm on Deform to Form a Star, but Catalogue / Preserve / Amass is seriously amazing thus far. the backing band makes it
Last Chance to Listen to Grace for Drowning Before Asteroid Kills Us. Last Chance to Listen to Grace for Drowning Before Asteroid Kills Us.
Got my Catalogue / Preserve / Amass in the mail today. It came along with Cenotaph. I was tempted to recreate the concert experience by listening to Cenotaph and then it, but I was impatient. Catalogue... is a great live cd, I must say.
The guitar solo in Like Dust I Have Cleared from My Eye is the best guitar solo in Steven Wilson's career.
My current favorite (which could change tomorrow, as there are so many great songs to choose from) is "Remainder the Black Dog". I can almost here a Zappa like quality for a few brief moments in that piece. I love how Steven Wilson seamlessly blends the heavy with the jazz. The piano riff on that song is always stuck in my head for hours after listening. I really can't say enough great things about Grace For Drowning. Somehow, Steven Wilson always finds a way to satisfy every kind of musical craving I have in a way that nobody else can. There is certainly something to be said about an album, and an artist, that can evoke all those feelings, emotions, and cravings the way Steven Wilson does- genius.
I will keep that in mind. Interesting choice for a band name. My old high school death metal band used to be called "Stigmata" until we found out there was already a band by that name. That was a sad day.
It's a good thing you didn't stick with it, because that sounds like the worst band name ever. Bad enough you're playing the worst genre ever...
WAS. WAS playing. And that name ruled. Nothing wrong with a little deathmetal now and then. Guessing by your band's name you guys must be of the hipster variety?
