I look around this forum and see that everyone seems to know a pretty extensive amount of bands out there, and it makes me feel like I'm kinda behind. So I'm gonna describe what I like and hopefully you guys can give me some suggestions on what to check out. Metallica (one of the first bands I really got into, kind of bored of them now though) System of a Down(same as before), Dream Theater,(pre BCASL, tried to listen to BCASL and ADTOE but they sound kinda stale), Opeth (rarely in the mood for the growls these days however been digging Heritage), Porcupine Tree (Exclusively FOABP, never given anything else of theirs a proper chance, though from what I've heard it sounds really dry) Dredg (Exclusively TPTPTD, their other stuff sounds good from what I've heard) Ayreon (familiar with The Human Equation and 01011001, not familiar with other stuff or other Lucassen projects) Pain of Salvation (huge fan of remedy lane, the perfect element and Scarsick (scarsick is good, shut up)) Vanden Plas (only got into Christ 0, Seraphic Clockwork and Beyond Daylight) Anacrusis (just got the one album, screams and whispers) And for good measure, here is all the random shit I like, though I am looking for metally and proggy recommendations, might help to see what my 'limits' are: ABBA, Paul Simon, Belle and Sebastian, Queen, RHCP, RATM, Trivium (I was young and reckless), Arctic Monkeys, .. nothing else worth mentioning. God damn, I have a very short list. I listen to barely anything. Anyway, give me suggestions. Also, if there are better albums than i listed by Porcupine Tree, Dredg, Ayreon or Vanden Plas, let me know). I tried Tool, dunno what it was but I wasn't digging it. And yes, I know I could have used the internet, but thought it would be better to hear to actual human feedback
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suit Beyond Twilight - Section X Also In Absentia by Porcupine Tree.
Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle, Flight of the Migrator Between the Buried and Me - Colors Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth, A Night at the Opera, Somewhere Far Beyond, Imaginations from the Other Side, Live Demons and Wizards - Demons and Wizards, Touched by the Crimson King Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes, Alive in Athens, Days of Purgatory, Burnt Offerings, Horror Show, The Dark Saga Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden, Killers, The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind. Powerslave, Somewhere in Time Mastodon - Blood Mountain, Leviathan, Crack the Skye Nightwish - Oceanborn, Century Child, Wishmaster, Once, Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia, Deadwing Powerglove - Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man, Saturday Morning Apocalypse, Total Pwnage Star One - Space Metal Symphony X - The Odyssey, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, Paradise Lost, Twilight in Olympus norbert88
I usually just find a whole bunch of similar shit to the stuff listed, but fuck it, you've got a whole new musical world waiting for you, so instead I'll just rec some stuff that I ended up getting into around the same time as I was getting into stuff like Metallica, PT, Opeth and dredg. The Mars Volta, who combine their punk roots with hazy prog rock aesthetic and Latin influences, really enjoyable stuff: Explosions in the Sky for a bit of post-rocky goodness. You may not like it, but post-rock is always interesting to hear for the first time. A bit of alternative hip-hop to listen to in case you think it's all hoes and blow:
Haken - Aquarius Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome Caligula's Horse - Moments From Ephemeral City Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning Textures - Dualism That's a good start
Also quoting me doesn't help since he said "thought it would be better to hear to actual human feedback"
based on your taste being quite similar to mine try these albums Katatonia - Viva Emptiness The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium Oceansize - Effloresce 3 - The Ghost You Gave To me Amplifier - Insider Deadsoul Tribe - The January Tree and based on Vanden Plas - Evergrey, SymphonyX albums by bands you already listed Porcupine Tree - In Absentia dredg - Catch Without Arms
How anyone could recommend this before one of the Acts is ridonkulous. The Dear Hunter- Act I, II or III. They're all great. TCS is just really long, and not that good to boot.
Also, it seems like you'd also have a pretty good time wandering around the 80s thrash/metal scene. First couple Testament albums, Sepultura, Vio-Lence, King Diamond (Abigail/Them), Anthrax (Spreading the Disease, Among the Living), Accept (Metal Heart), Apocrypha (The Forgotten Scroll), Rage, Exodus, etc.
Dude... I just spend like the last twenty minutes writing up a shit ton of suggestions for you, and then the page refreshed for some stupid fucking reason, and now it's gone. I'm actually kinda pissed off about it. Maybe tomorrow I'll try to come up with it again...
Okay so for now, I'll break it down for you... as far as what you're already listening to... Let's neglect Metallica and SOAD since you're getting fed up with them anyway. Idk what those Dream Theater albums you named there are but as far as I'm concerned these days, there's two DT albums really worth having. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and Train of Thought. Train of Thought marks the end of the apex of DT's song writing. My experience with Opeth was honestly short-lived, as it was with most prog-metal for that matter... I spent a decent amount of time on Still Life and Blackwater Park. I remember really enjoying these albums, but I haven't given them any time in years. I love Porcupine Tree. I've seen them live several times and spent countless hours listening to their albums and watching their DVDs. I had a huge PT phase. For me, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia and Deadwing are their best albums. I am also a huge dredg fan. You need to listen to el cielo and Catch Without Arms. TPTPTD is a great album, and it has it's own special place for me... but it just doesn't hold a candle to el cielo. I can't really honestly give you any real critique on Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet. I always thought Ayreon was a huge joke. There were a few songs I could get into, but for the most part it just made me laugh. Pain of Salvation is one of my all time favorite bands. The Perfect Element is one of my all time favorite albums. Love Scarsick as well. I would suggest you explore the rest of their catalogue including Be and Roadsalt. Never heard of those other two bands. From their names I would assume they are some kind of prog metal... like I said, for the most part, I can't relate to prog-metal at all... even when I was really into it, most of it was just not as good as the really great stuff, so I was always really selective about what prog-metal I listened to. So, I missed the part about how you are mainly looking for proggy and prog metal suggestions. I can do this. You need to check out The Flower Kings. They did some work with Daniel Gildenlow from Pain of Salvation. So if you can relate to them, I would start with Unfold the Future and then check out Adam and Eve. The Pineapple Thief is somewhat similar to Porcupine Tree in ways... you might like them. Try Variations on a Dream and Little Man. Spock's Beard is very proggy and it gets a little prog-metal at times. Start with V or Snow 3 is awesome. You probably saw them already suggesting and I'll back that up. The End is Begun and Wake Pig are probably most up your alley. Check out White Willow. I never hear anyone talk about them, but I was really into them for a time. Their album Sacrament is really good, and probably most what you're looking for. It's more avant-garde... female vocals... flute... it's easy to listen to, but also interesting and engaging. Their album Signal to Noise was more like dark wave synth pop or something... idk. I liked it... Looks like they have a new album called Terminal Twilight. Never heard of it till now. I'll have to see what this is all about. I'm going to do what no one else here will... Coheed and Cambria... idk even where to tell you to start, but they are definitely progressive in their own right. Might be wise to start with In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, although, I would normally suggest that a new listener start with Second Stage Turbine Blade... And then there's your classic prog, like Genesis, Yes, and Pink Floyd. Anyone who is into prog knows these bands, and knows the essential albums. Yes- Close to the Edge, Fragile, Relayer Genesis- Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here, The Dark Side of the Moon But then, you should already know those, and shame on you if you don't. Kay, that's all I have for now. That should get you going. Enjoy.
wow. no Opeth in the first post...and no Opeth recommended in the thread? check out Opeth. get Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park and Still Life to start. get Bilateral and Tall Poppy Syndrome by Leprous. EDIT: ok i see SCF did finally mention them, but still. come on guys you're slipping.
don't listen to these arrogant chucklefucks, I have a much better website to recommend to you to go to for recommendations http://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/ the General Music Discussion board will do you a lot of good
I second the guy who recommended Haken. Based on what you listed, I think you'll totally love them. They have a lot of the elements that made old DT great without sounding like a ripoff.
