A great piece of music can sound great with any instrument (hell some stuff even sounds good with MIDI), but. But... Well I was just listening Carmen (Prêtre, 1964), and the uptempo main theme in the end of "Les tringles des sistres tintaient" would sound great arranged for a metal band (the ending screams for double kicks), but it still could never capture that feel and energy of the orchestra, with the washing cymbals and a mad conductor just doing that something they do to get it sound both "just about to get lost" and "perfectly thought out".
