I just got this game yesterday, and a few thoughts: 1. It doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy at all. It feels like Final Fantasy XI, which was about the furthest thing from Final Fantasy possible. 2. Battle is boring so far. I know there's a lot more to it, so maybe it'll get more exciting. 3. It's HUGE. I like this aspect of it. It's easy to lose your bearings though. 4. The story looks promising.
Re: Final Fantasy XII So...should I buy it? Or buy the new Guitar hero? Or should I keep myself to pirated games on my pc?
Re: Final Fantasy XII It's too early for me to say if you should buy it. So far as I can tell, if you like the gameplay of Final Fantasy, this isn't what you're looking for. If you like the in-depth story and awesome graphics of the later Final Fantasies, then it is what you're looking for.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Go get Guitar Hero 2 and wait for FFXII to be cheap. The story from what I have seen is really bland and very FFT/FFXI. The battle system will eventually turn into hack and slash once you get your levels and license board up. I don't know if I'm going to play it yet, but this is all stuff I have observed by watching my roomm8 playing it. But he seems to enjoy it so don't trust my judgement too much. Wait for his post in this thread later today (Redwing605)
Re: Final Fantasy XII I have to ask: Is there a world map this time? That was one of the biggest things I hated about X. I liked that things had a bit of a sense of scale, rather than just walking everywhere or going through a menu in the airship, so the world just seemed tiny.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Can't wait to play this game. Is the level up system still that stupid graph thing from FFX? I hated that thing.
Re: Final Fantasy XII It definitely doesn't feel like the older final fantasy games, it feels more like a MMORPG. I think it's a pretty fun game, it starts off really slow though, so keep at it if you think its slow. It'll pick up around level 15-20 if you spend your points wisely. The story is pretty confusing to me, but I'm not really good with faces and names so it may just be me. The gambit system takes some getting used to, but when you learn how to use it efficiently combat becomes easy. My characters are all around level 30, and a battle consists of me pressing "x" twice (not boss fights). I like the license system, it makes grinding more enjoyable, especially when you get a trinket that allows you to earn double points.
Re: Final Fantasy XII I cant sing enough praises about this game. Im at just about the 40 hour mark, but theres so much stuff I dont have yet and tons of side quests to do. Not to mention the story is still building, so expect quite a lengthy and awesome adventure. The gameplay is exactly like previous Final Fantasy games, only this time you run around in real time and it saves you from having to push "X" every time you want to attack. Its just a more streamlined version of the gameplay, which you may or may not like. Personally I love it, but I know it wont be for everyone. I usually wait until I finish a game before I rank it, but I can already tell this will be in my top 3 favorite Final Fantasy games, if not the number one.
Re: Final Fantasy XII I'm just got it and am going to dive into it tonite...I can't wait! this is how I rank the FF games that I have played(don't percieve this as a thread highjack, please) 1.FF7 2.FF3 3.FF9 4.FF2(or 4 I don't know even know whos calls what what anymore) 5.FF10 6.FF8 7.FF10-2
Re: Final Fantasy XII I justr starting playing it after conquering Final Fantasy III. I'm almost six hours in and enjoying it immensely. I haven't played any MMORPGs..so the battle for me reminds me of both Chrono Trigger and Knights of the Old Republic (the latter especially). The story is pretty slow right now, but I'm cool with it.
Re: Final Fantasy XII The battle system is the best thing about this game. Finally leveling up is actually really fun.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Yes. Definitely the coolest battle system I've seen in awhile. Trying to collect the items for the best sword is a bitch.
Re: Final Fantasy XII I like it a lot. I think it's a definite improvement over FFX, which I absolutely hated. Then again, I'm not an FF fanatic, so I'm pretty sure my opinion on FF games is automatically rendered null and void.
Re: Final Fantasy XII FFXII is fantastic. I got it when it came out and basically shut down my social life and almost lost my girlfriend because of the damn game. The battle system may be a little weird for those who grew up on turn-based RPGs (like me) but after getting used to it, it is the best battle system in an FF game to date. The voice acting is probably the most polished I have heard on a video game ever. While the music is not as memorable as the previous games, the soundtrack does a great job of complementing the mood of the location without being repetitive. The graphics are great; the world and characters are highly developed and very interesting to look at. I have a few gripes about the story that I will reserve so I don't spoil anything, but all in all, the characters and plot are interesting, if flawed. I dare say FFXII is my second favorite in the series, right below FFIV.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Everyone I've talked to who has it says it's fantastic. I'll have to give it a shot sometime this semester.
Re: Final Fantasy XII I am currently playing it for the first time. So far I have played around 35 hours and Im really enjoying it. The battle system is very different than the other FF I have played but it is interesting. The story seems interesting but as someone already said it is slow paced so I can't say much about it yet. I also like most of the characters, though I don't feel Vaan is a really good lead character but Basch rocks. The problem that I have so far is that the gambit system can make boss battles way to easy, the characters can pretty much do everything by themselves and you just have see is someone gets killed to toss a phoenix down. Also the quickenings are cool but at the same time they are too powerfull, once the characters have their 3 quickenings one can kill bosses with one quickening chain.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Im almost at the end of the game on my second run through. I love it! The game can be easy if youve played an MMORPG before, only because at some point you'll likely grind out some levels. Grinding in this game can make some bosses incredibly easy, especially after gaining all the Quickenings. The optional bosses/hunts/espers are another matter, though.
Re: Final Fantasy XII I fear that I have made the remainder of the game far too easy for myself. I just got back to Rabanastre after finishing the Tomb of Raithwall, and have gotten my characters to level 32 with around 2000 HP each and awesome weapons that hit for around 2k.
Re: Final Fantasy XII See my post above yours :P I believe it's out here on the 23rd of February. At which point my social life will come to a halt for several months, and my Wii will gather dust for a while.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Jesus Christ how did you get that many levels so quick? I was maybe 17-18 when I beat that area.
Re: Final Fantasy XII This is what put me off Final Fantasy. I enjoyed 6, 7, 8 and 9, but the latter two of these four were ridiculously easy.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Don't take it to mean that the game's easy. It just eliminates all the unnecessary fat from the gameplay, allowing you to better enjoy what are the more menial tasks such as fighting easy enemies. But unless you power level, the game provides a quite satisfactory challenge, especially some of the bosses, some of the hunts, and ALL of the optional bosses and espers (who do such ridiculous stuff that what level you are barely even matters). And because it's all about setting your gambits and strategizing, the feeling of beating some of these bosses is so satisfying it's difficult to describe. It's not the hardest game I've ever played, but none of the Final Fantasies are really difficult at all, and it's certainly one of the more difficult in the series.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Exactly. Pressing X twice is mainly for leveling/fighting simple monsters. Gambits open up a whole new slew of possibilities for the simple stuff (healing, etc.) while you still need to be on your toes for tons of other stuff, mainly status effects.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Yeah, figuring out how to get your gambits just right so it automatically does the housekeeping stuff in between battles was a process, but I eventually got it down. When I realized I could just gambit Libra way at the bottom, thus out of battle, I was like "yo, I'm awesome". At this point I have about three guys with a Libra gambit, two or three with Ally:Slow > Haste, my mages all with Ally:any > Esuna, certain people with Curaga gambits, certain ones with Cura, three with Foe:HP 100% > Steal gambits. It's so awesome.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Foe: HP = 100% > Steal is such an awesome gambit unless you're fighting several large enemies at once. You tend to have one rogue party member running around f'n shit up.
Re: Final Fantasy XII Yeah it can get really, really annoying, manually telling that character to attack the guy I want them to attack when things get rough. It's even worse when (and it does happen) I don't notice that I have a missing party member off stealing over and over again from some guy off screen. But it's the best steal gambit I could come up with.
