basically the same, but not necessarily the Geddy Lee model. Just a solid 4-string J-bass (if not a Fender, then a G&L or Lakland).
I've rented a Geddy Lee a couple time when my old bass was being repaired, and it's a very consistent sound. I haven't played a MM in a long time though. A guy I went to school with bought one a few years back, and then proceeded to replace all the electronics, and I was like abuhhhh.
Call me a generic faggot, but I really want a nice Fender Precision Bass. I played one recently and it was so much better sounding than I remember. I'd use it more for less metal endeavors and more for slap, jazz, etc.
Precisions just have such a better thump/bass tone. No idea why (don't know much about passive pups, none of my basses have them). I do have a jazz (fretless), and it sounds ok (I've never played a fretted jazz...maybe I'm missing out) but I really like the sound of a P-bass for certain styles. I currently use a P-Bass knockoff in my university jazz band (honestly, I have no idea how different a real P-Bass would even be), and if you roll off the tone knob a bit and play high on the neck, you can replicate a mean ass upright tone, no lie (with some new strings). Just has a really nice sustain and sort of smooth attack.
I'm calling bullshit on this. It wouldn't even be close unless it was fretless, and even then, it's not even close.
Well, playing over the fretboard, or like, that side of a neck pickup on any bass gives a really warm, round tone. It's pretty common for electric jazz guys (Tony Grey and Chris Tarry are two good names that come to mind) to do this for walking. It doesn't have the same attack as an upright, but the tone lends itself towards it. If you did this on fretless, I imagine it would at least be similar to an electric upright.
I want to order some more cymbals to add to my setup soon. Probably a new ride, a stack, and a couple more splashes. Probably going to be: 21" ALT Big Bell ride 14" ICON Stacker/16" ALT China 8" and 10" ALT Splashes all TRX, of course
Fretted jazzes are pretty ballsy. Look up Mammoth by Interpol to get a decent idea of the stock tone (played with a pick) coming from one. (Can't go on Youtube, due to being at work.)
I've always vastly preferred wood grain/natural finishes, but I have to admit that this one is pretty cool.
I'm more interested in the multiscale Agile 8s, but this one is so wonderfully obnoxious looking. you don't understand I FUCKING LOVE GREEN
I don't really like how they started putting the binding on top of the body and headstock on the Hellraiser. I have one of the early Hellraisers and it's just on the sides.
Let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks tone is 90% the instrument? lol Technique, brah. Call bullshit all you want, but it sounds like it to me based on the upright sound in the recordings of the songs we're playing. I have the tone knob at like 1-2 just to give it a bit of clarity, roll off the mids a bit, and have the bass a bit high. I have some really thick strings on it, and I'm plucking literally between frets 15-17 on the neck. I have the volume not too high, and am getting some of the volume simply from playing harder. I'm playing through a 15" speaker as well. It has a really slow attack and a nice round sustain, and it sounds good to me. I've played dozens of basses and amps from metal to jazz for the past 7 years actively, so I know my shit when it comes to this stuff. @Nik - I fucking love green too, and will ONE DAY own a green bass. Maybe more toward the forest green/darker green side, but that guitar makes me drool.
This is the point. By getting that mellow a sound you lose out on the attack that an upright gives. Just because it's a deeper, woodier tone doesn't mean it's slower to respond.
I still have attack though, I have a bit of treble in. I'm not going to get into this "your opinions of tone aren't as good as my opinions about tone" argument, but I've got a fairly close sound to an upright considering what I'm using. *IN THE MIX* it sounds much closer than if I'm more exposed, that's for sure.
Got a few things to consider, but need to sell some of my other shit first. Tempted to change my overdrive pedal from an EBS MultiDrive to something I can shape the tone of a bit more. Tech 21 VT Bass perhaps, but I'm cautious of them as the Sansamp's overdrive sucks cock. Gonna sell my unused 6-string bass and my old black/pointy 5-string that I've barely touched since I got my custom, and replace them with a better 5-string that I can use as a backup instrument if necessary without looking like a 15 year old who just started listening to Slayer. Dunno what to replace them with yet, but if I can't find anything that ticks all the boxes then another Simnett custom is a possibility, as I'd like to keep supporting Simo as much as I can. Happy as I am with my current amp (Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0), I'm curious to compare it with the 900W model to see how different it actually is. The ShuttleMAX looks interesting as well for its ability to switch or blend the solid state and tube preamps for different applications. Might just be overkill however, and surely has too many dials. But that's why I need to try them out!
King Prawn, that guitar is really interesting. Too bad it isn't widely available. Here's the guitar I want: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guit...p-hollowbody-electric-guitar-with-p-90-pickup It's between this and an Ibanez Artcore, but the music shop I work in carries almost exclusively Ibanez and I've seen some examples of pretty horrible quality control from them. Godin has always been a favorite of mine.
So pretty! Surprisingly loud for such a thin body, and the one I played at the shop played like a dream.
Resonator or a dobro or something. For the microtonal guitar I wonder if the concept is really that good. It seems like fretted instruments have intonation problems enough... isn't adding quarter tones going to exarcerbate that? Still, it's pretty cool to be able to access those notes and still have the chording ability of a fretted guitar... I like the fretless sound for that type of music better, but you can kiss a lot of chord shapes goodbye!
It looks like a Christmas tree ornament. Genomer, Jazzmasters are fantastic. My brother in law has that exact model, along with the Elvis Costello one. Such an awesome variety of tones.
I would get one, but I'm nowhere near good enough at guitar to justify dropping the necessary fundage on it.
Think I've decided against this now, and I'm going to get a blendable loop pedal instead so I can mix the clean and overdriven signals together.
95% sure I'll be getting this baby in the next few months (Clavia Nord Electro 3 73). I'm also gassing for one of these more and more lately, but it's probably still gonna be awhile (Access Virus TI).
I kinda want a Kronos as well, but I'm content with my Motif XS as it is, and by the time I'm feeling the need for an upgrade something even more powerful will be out.
Yeah I currently have a Triton ProX 88 and I think it's a little outdated. Played the Kronos at Guitar Center and thought it was pretty awesome.
I am currently shopping around for a new guitar amp... I'm geting irritated. I def want a combo. I dont want to buy an amp with built in effects... I am so sick of the digital sound. Trying to find an amp with good cleans and natural distortion without breaking the bank... Any suggestions?
I believe I have made my choice... Time to start saving. You just can't beat this tone. Orange Rockerverb MKII Combo. Fucking $2,500.00. Either this or a Laney LC50 which is much more affordable at $800.00. Lol, I'll prolly go the latter, I gotta get a new car soon...
