Just for fun. From 1 to 99, what players will ALWAYS be that number for you? You don't have to list numbers that don't qualify, obviously.

    ME:

    1 - Bernie Parent
    2 - David Akers
    5 - Donovan McNabb
    8 - Shane Victorino
    9 - Scottie Upshall
    10 - John LeClair
    11 - Jimmy Rollins
    12 - Simon Gagne
    18 - Mike Richards
    19 - Mikael Renberg
    20 - Brian Dawkins
    22 - Mike Knuble
23 - Michael Jordan (duh unless you're from Cleveland, and even then)
    24 - Sami Kapanen
25 - Keith Primeau (best captain of all time)
    26 - Chase Utley
27 - Ron Hextall (best goalie)
    28 - Claude Giroux
    33 - Cliff Lee (probably)
    35 - Cole Hamels
    51 - Carlos Ruiz
    54 - Jeremiah Trotter
    58 - Trent Cole
66 - Mario Lemieux (fuck this guy)
77 - Chris Gratton (fuck this guy too)
    84 - Hank Baskett
87 - Sidney Crosby (fuck this guy most)
    88 - Eric Lindros
    99 - Wayne Gretzky (duh)

That's all I can think of. A lot of famous player don't necessarily attach to their numbers for me (e.g. I don't think of Favre as the only #4).

Fucking lol @ Keith being the best captain of all time. I only have a select few mind-retired numbers... these are ones that feel uncomfortable if another player is wearing, even in a different sport.

    4 - Favre
    9 - Howe
19 - Yzerman (the best captain of all time)
    23 - Jordan
    99 - Gretzky

Interesting that 23 seems to be worn by the most high profile players in their sports. ie. Beckham, Warne, Jordan.

Warnie, Beckham and Jordan didn't spring to mind for me - definitely always going to be Jamie Carragher

    32 - Peter Matera
    14 - Xabi Alonso
    27 - Glen Jakovich

9's a fucking crazy one with all of our and every other team's number one strikers and Ben Cousins and Nick Naitanui for West Coast.

I'll always associate the number 7 with Beckham.

9 - Alan Shearer. Anyone else is incorrect.

Bryan Trottier was a pretty good #19. 6 cups, 1,400+ points, sound defensively (his ± was +452), and tough as nails.

Yeah Beckham always wore 7. 7 is the sort of playmaker's jersey number and at Man Utd he was always 7. When he went to Madrid it wasn't available so he switched to another number, and then when he came to the Galaxy 7 wasn't available either, so he went with the next high profile number (or the most high profile number in the US) which is 23. Although obviously Elmo was trolling with that post.

Double zero still makes me think Greg Ostertag, which then makes me think of oysters. When I was a kid I always thought the two zeros were like two big oysters, and they also reminded me of the goofy Kareem-style goggles that dude wore.
