I can't really stand Loomis half the time he's playing guitar solos, so a Petrucci guest solo is far more exciting to me.
Well, I mean no disrespect to Loomis because I actually really quite like his playing; he's one of those guys where if he's on he's fucking ON, like the solo in Engines of Hate, I really like that solo, but a lot of the time he's just all like weedly weedly shreddly weedly, and I mean he's good as fuck at that too he's like weedly and it's pretty cool, plus my main 7 string that I use is his signature model for fuck sakes, so Jeff is just the man. Plus he's always consistently just ridiculous, I've never seen one Youtube video of him fucking up, really. That said, Everything JP has done on: Images and Words, Awake, (most of) Falling into Infinity, Scenes From a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, (most of) Train of Thought, (like two solos on) Systematic Chaos, Black Clouds and Silver Linings and A Dramatic Turn of Events, no to mention A Change of Seasons and all of his work with LTE and his live solos on G3 (fuck they were awesome) and that one 2 or 3 minute improvisation on Rock Discipline, have been infinitely better than anything Jeff has done. I mean, this is all just my opinion but I mean. Fuck.
thats because you like extremely generic, trite, psuedo emotional (shitty) metal pseudo fusion soloing.
Meh, I don't really attempt to decide whether or not guitar solos have "emotion" anymore because I'm not 13, but I do dig me some Sfogli and Per Nillson and Paul Wardingham, those are kinda my guys right now. I don't think they're psuedo fusion, and I don't think Loomis or JP are fusion at all in any sense of that obscure word, but meh. I actually don't really like Fusion a ton, I just like it in small doses, which is why I like it in an occasional metal song for a solo. My band plays jazz and fusion all the time in the car and it's just over my head I think.
ya so like pseudo emotional, trite generic wannabe fusion bs. i get it. and i don't think you actually like fusion or jazz, you like what you think is fusion or jazz, which is rarely ever fusion or jazz. just sayin. yesim mad
I didn't mean that we had the same taste in music, lol, I meant that I'm glad you understand what I mean.
Yeah, I used to try to force guitar solos in my songs and they're all lame. On our EP I have one solo and it's p good, imo.
I bet a drummer, bassist, vocalist or pretty much any other instrument player would disagree with you.
i thought arguing about whether a guitar solo has emotion (and, if so, trying to quantify it) was completely DTF territory.
That's why in TF we try to feature everyone. On our EP there's one guitar solo, one bass solo, one drum solo, and a keyboard solo. EDIT: FUCK THERE'S TWO GUITAR SOLOS. FUCK EDIT: but one of them is a bunch of weedly chromatic diminished chords so it barely counts.
