Let's hear it for running, yo. Discuss it and shit. Why do you love it? Why do you hate it? What's your best mile time? Best 10 mile time? Why does it not fucking matter how quickly you run, but rather that you feel the run in the moment, and cherish it? Have you ever shit your pants on a run?

    well?

I hate running and I have always hated running. I have also always been slow, even when I was in my best shape and actually being trained to get faster.

I hate it because it's so damn boring. There are no scenic places to run here, nor good running trails. Running on a treadmill is even more boring, and even listening to music sometimes isn't enough to distract me.

I did 3 miles in 40 minutes the other night on a machine, which is terrible, but at least I did it.

Anyone do HIIT? I've been running for a while, and sort of hit a wall where I wasn't getting any faster or gaining any more endurance. I was mixing short, quick runs (like, a 1.5 to 2 miles) with longer 5+ mile jogs but I don't think it was really helping. Since starting HIIT i've been feeling better. Really I'm aiming for having the endurance to go quite quickly over the 1-2 mile range, is it best to carry on with steady state or the HIIT?

I've been somewhat on the HIIT tip for a while now, mixing 5-6 mile runs at a steady 9.5-10 mph pace, with 10+ mile runs at a 7-7.5 mph pace. Feels good man, and it was the only way I could continue getting the high after a certain while.

I've done a couple marathons of my own (not officially held/sanctioned), and the craziest distance to time ratio run I've done yet is a 10 mile foot race that I finished in 70 mins 12 secs

I try and run as often as I can, which isn't often enough. This is my favorite time of year to run though, with all the colors of the leaves changing and such.

I've never really tried for speed, and I think the one time I did I ran a mile in a little over 7 minutes. My cardio endurance is decent, but I'm sure my extra weight slows me down.

Good shit, Litho. Glad it gives you joy.

Also if anyone is interested in trail running, i strongly suggest checking it out once or twice. For me personally, it's fucking heaven, or heaven fucking me . . . gently in the butt. Combines light hiking and running, two of my favorite things

double post bump, so I got these recently and they have begun completely altering my stride (running and walking), and strengthened new areas of my feet/legs. I kinda love them and want to wear them everyday, but know that it's about finding a balance and not transitioning to violently.

Just took this up on Monday. Was walking 14-16km each day but, after a month or so, that just didn't do much for me. Only run about 8.5km (a little over five miles) a day for now but am working back up to 14km.

I've been running since I was probably about 10! haha. I started off running the 100m sprint, then got into the whole cross country thing, which I've kept up. (I'm 24 now).

On a good week I'll track about 40 miles, I'm quite lucky as I live about a mile away from winding, straight, hilly and flat country-lanes, so you can basically make your own route, it's great fun :)

Anyone on runkeeper? Always looking for new street team members.

Sounds like an awesome place to run, Max.

I've actually been abstaining from running for a good three weeks now because I think I developed some Metatarsalgia in my right foot. Yes, it would be, in part, thanks to the vibram shoes, but more to do with the fact that I had one particularly (read excessively) intense day of activity on them. My fucking fault. Flew to close to the sun.
Anyway I'm basically a mess right now. Even though I've been working in non-impact cardio as a substitute, and been doing other things to spend my energy, I'm getting a sense of just how addicted I was to the practice. My appetite is completely fucked right now, and my sleeping patterns even more so. On top of that the timing of it all has created a bit of a confluence of shitty shit. Not a happy camper right now.

You'll get there eventually, man. When I started getting more into running, due to poor shoes, I tore my Achilles and it really fucking smarted for about a month/6 weeks, right in the middle of summer aswell! Was so pissed off missing out on a good run in the sunshine all down to me being an idiot and not having proper shoes. A few weeks back, I pulled something in the back of my quad going on an off road route with 'normal' runners on, stupid mistake, cost me about 10 days of running.

Have you tried skipping? If I'm injured or if it's really cold/pissing rain, I'll skip, feels like Rocky IV or something :lol but it's really good, and you can get a really good work-out from a rope.

So it's actually almost def Sessmoiditis. Not sure if the inflammation/pain will be acute or chronic. Gonna have a quality podiatrist have a look at some x-rays soon.

Been taking anti-inflammatories and icing it some and trying to stay off it. so fucking rough right now

Had to take a break from this recently, too. Cartilege in my knees was fucked from running ten km every day and doing the strength stuff at night. Currently doing an hour on the exercise bike each day instead. Hoping to take up swimming again soon, though, which fitness-wise simply crushes running anyway.

ran yesterday with my coworker. Only like 2 1/2 km and it reminded me why I don't do it regularly again.

I think I'll pick up Badminton instead.

it was actually just an awkward leg flail move, and they didnt capture moment of the move that I was hoping they would. so the result is whatever that is. after the fact I saw that there was a bit of a Vega quality to it.

This is gonna sound dumb as shit, but I just bough ta treadmill of a garage sale. All I know is that I can run about 2.25 miles with the speed steadily set at 5.5. I can kick it up to 6.5 and cruise just fine, but I work a warehouse job and I don't want to kill my legs right in the middle of the week. I know I could probably go for another mile or so if I just keep the speed steady at 5.5, but I might try that on the weekend when I know I can rest after the run.

Any tips for a n00b? etc...

I used to ride my bicycle to work every day, about 3 miles each way, 5 days a week and I was in good shape. I ran a 5k in about 40-43 minutes. Now I live further away from my new job so I had to buy a car. I haven't gained any weight, but my running shape has gone down a bit. My goal for now is just running about 2.5 at the very least 4 times a week, and then start gradually working up.

I wish I could run outside more often, but Vegas is way to hot outside.

Going for a run later tonight when it's a bit cooler. I haven't felt my previous knee problem that used to bug me. I hope it stays that way. It's like every run is a new test.

Also, the Copenhagen marathon just took place this past weekend. It was won by a guy who only started running only eight years ago because he was overweight. Four years after he won the national championship here and has also won several runs hereafter. Cool story really. http://live.copenhagenmarathon.dk/en.html#2

Just do whatever's comfortable. Are you looking for fitness or trying to run a specific race? If you want to do a 5K or whatever, I'd say make sure you can run for 30 minutes without stopping, and then slowly increase distance AND speed from there. If you just want to get in shape, then do whatever you can handle without feeling sharp pain in your legs/lungs.

I ran my first 5K in a little over 34 minutes and took walking breaks, but now I can do 5K in about 28-29 minutes on a treadmill without being in pain or stopping. It's just practice.

Yup. Also trying doing sprint intervals. Go as fast as you can for 1 minute, walk for a minute. Do that five times and call that a set. Do other stuff too but try to do 3 sets in a workout.

Cool. My only general advice is ... once you're comfortable on time/distance, try to keep it to every other day instead of every day (or consecutive days).

Also keep in mind that some people cannot physically run, by which I mean they have heart attacks and shit. That's why I say stop when you're uncomfortable. People have died running half marathons.

Thanks for all the advice, bros.

Right now I just want to do at least 2 miles every other day. Right now it takes me about 20 - 21 minutes to do that comfortably. Again, I can do that now and just feel the normal soreness/tired after I'm done. Once that gets easy I'll push it a bit more each time.

I just have some generic New Balance shoes. I need new ones because these are beat to shit. I take a double-E (extra wide) shoe, and that + the ventilation (which I assume is a feature in most running shoes) feel amazing.

My friend uses those toe shoes and I just laugh. They supposedly are "better" for you but you also have to ween into them or else you'll injure yourself. Sounds retarded, just like those "shapeups".

Except the "minimalist" shoes aren't a complete joke like shape-ups are. I'm hardly an expert on them, but once you get used to them they are supposed to be much, much better for your feet than traditional shoes. I ran in these shoes for the Tough Mudder, they are kind of a cross between normal shoes and the more minimal style (and with sweet tread): http://www.inov-8.com/New/Global/Product-View-XTalon-212.html?L=27

I currently have a pair of Brooks Glycerine 9 and they are great.

Those toe shoes like the Vibram Five Fingers are...I dunno what to think. I imagine people who do not break them in slowly and carefully could develop plantar fasciitis, especially if their gait remains the same as when wearing shoes. Most people I've known who use them for running say they typically don't heel-strike and instead transition to running "on their toes." This is probably good for your knees but I imagine metatarsalgia would be more likely to occur. They seem like they'd be awesome for rock climbing since you'd have more flexibility. Overall though the positives and negatives seem to sort of cancel each other out. Hard to say what's truly better in the long run. Probably different per individual and you've just gotta try it, or ask a podiatrist for an exam and opinion for you personally.

edit: a friend of mine used to have to wear a patellar tendon band while running, but since he adapted to regular use of the Vibrams he hasn't needed it.
