I just got "Through Silver In Blood" this weekend, and I must say...it's incredibly difficult to get into... ...of course, that was/is probably because I'm pretty certain at this point that the first track is easily the worst. Thoughts?
No, it's their previous one. Newest is Given To The Rising, which is also good. TEoES holds a special place in my heart though. EDIT: not sure about best, but it's my favorite
NEUROSIS + JARBOE!!!!!! http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/neurosis_and_jarboe/neurosis_and_jarboe/ Awesome album. I like the Eye of Every Storm too
i dont think that much of them...ive only got Enemy of the Sun, which is not bad i suppose, but it doesnt do anything to make me stop and think 'oh that was good'
not really the best example of the band. get like any album they did after that for something more impressive.
naw, that's not it. Through Silver In Blood is regarded by many as their best. I can't decide a favorite out of Through Silver, Times of Grace, and A Sun that Never Sets. Probably leaning towards the latter. Either way, everything since TSiB is great if you ask me. TSib IS a hard album to get into though. It is very ugly music and hard to listen to, but it is very rewarding once it starts to click. Later releases are bit more "pretty" and less abysmal though, so maybe work backwards through their catalogue.
Times of Grace is their best in my opinion, more accessible and varied while still being one of the heaviest releases in history... I loved certain songs of Through Silver in Blood when I first heard it (Tracks 4 & 5 in particular) but now I appreciate it for the seminal and masterful work it is...
ohmigod, neurosis are practically THE best metal band ever? certainly one of the all-time greats, and everything they've done is beyond awesome. they are super-dense, and like mikey said, very UGLY. but that's what makes them so awesome, that along with the fact that they have HUGE BALLS and are totally fearless.
See I wouldn't actually refer to them as ugly, except maybe their first two albums...I would describe them as gnarled, coarse and textured, but I don' think ugly is the word...It seems to imply a certain degree of disorder, which I don't think Neurosis have had for a long time...
really? first time i heard Neurosis the first thing i thought was "man, this is UGLY" haha. It's painful to listen to sometimes, and that's great They actually took me quite a while to get into, and it wasn't until Isis came out with Oceanic and i got into that did i go back and really appreciate Neurosis.
I have never heard them as ugly, there was a certain guitar tone that set my teeth on edge, but I didn't think of it as ugly. Merely unconventional. But I've never really had any such apprehensions about music. Death Metal and Growling never seemed remotely confrontational to me when I first heard it...
a sun never sets is my top pick, but it was also the first one i heard. i don't think i dislike any of their albums.
I think if Neurosis ever came close to producing a single in their career, it would be that. Man, that song is so amazing...As soon as I get home I'm listening to it...
That's interesting, because their other recent albums are similar enough to that one that I'd think you'd be able to enjoy them at least a little. I'm not sure what to tell you though.
right i downloaded (yes i know, im a terrible person) A Sun That Never Sets and The Eye Of Every Storm, now i just need to give them a solid running through.
I bought Given to the Rising yesterday. What an amazingly unusual album. Even by Neurosis standards it is quite bizarre.
I think it'll take a great deal more assimilation time than the last 3 LPs, but I'm quite sure it will stand up to scrutiny. Such a wonderfully complex and unpredictable album.
Through Silver In Blood is good, only one I've heard. "Eye" sounds like a song Mastodon was heavily inspired by.
I'm really into Neurosis the last few days. I blame this thread. I've liked them for a year or so, but never really given them the attention they deserve. I still think Neurosis w/Jarboe is the finest out of the 4 Neurosis albums I have.
What 4 do you have, pray tell? I have all studio albums from Enemy of the Sun onwards, but I'm considering picking up Souls at Zero as well...
Yeah I made the same connection when talking about the album with the only irl friend I have who I know likes Neurosis, he didn't agree. It's pretty blatant no matter how new you are to them.
The more I listen to this band, the more I fall absolutely in love with them. I'm insanely jealous of one of my good friends who drove the band around in his van last week when they toured the UK (and I didn't even get to see them )
Yeah awesome band, loving them myself lately. Given To The Rising is my favorite of the 4 albums i've heard so far.
I've got 8 - http://rateyourmusic.com/collection/richeym/strm_a/neurosis/1 - but as I'm fairly new to a lot of them, I'm still letting them *really* soak in. At the moment though, I really really like them all. What a band I have a feeling I could probably push a lot of those ratings up to 5-star with a few more listens. It's weird - when I first listened to Neurosis (maybe, 18 months ago, properly) I wasn't overly impressed by them (I thought they were good - I just didn't fall in love with any of it). It's only really when I got Neurosis w/Jarboe a few months ago that my interest in them was re-kindled, and for some reason they sound super-amazing to me nowadays.
Unfortunately that's the album i like the least so far. It just doesn't seem to click with me. The Tide (off Sun That Never Sets) is also one of the most intense songs i've heard in a while.
The latter moments of Erase (off w/Jarboe) are some of the most intense music moments I've heard in a long time. When Jarboe screams 'DEFY ME!' it just sounds like she's screaming her throat raw and the repetitive music behind her that slowly and gradually builds up louder and louder into a crescendo..... . It's one of my favourite things I've ever heard from Jarboe - from both her Swans career and her solo career.
I think i've already said that Swans isn't my kind of thing. I admit i haven't heard much, but what i've heard annoyed me big time, lolz.
Did you hear early-era (intense repetitive heavy-as-hell tribal-esque skullfucking metal), or latter era (heavy and rhythmic, but a hell of a lot more melodic, and often featuring Jarboe)?
So I just checked out TSiB and all I can say is I was pretty disappointed, couldn't even make it all the way through the album. I've seen it on many of these RYM "Heaviest Albums Ever" lists and to be honest, heavy is one of the last things to come to mind when describing this album. Maybe in a live setting it's pretty powerful, but it doesn't work at all for me on an album. Checked out some other songs on myspace and they don't do much for me either, so I think I'm going to give up on these guys.
Neurosis has got to be one of the best bands ever. Everything they do is incredible. If only they'd tour dammit.
Don't take this as an insult, because it's just an observation, but looking at your opinions for a variety of bands you don't seem to have much of an attention span for bands that use a bit more space in putting together their heavy side.
