I started playing my N64 this weekend, first time in a couple years and I've decided I want to start picking up games to complete my collection. I figured this would be a good place to get recommendations for games that you would consider essential.

Here's a list I compiled from this thread and other sources:

    1080: TenEight Snowboarding
    Banjo-Kazooie
    Castlevania 64
    Conker's Bad Fur Day
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Donkey Kong 64
    Excitebike 64
    F-Zero X
    GoldenEye 007
    Mario Golf
    Mario Kart 64
    Mario Party 3
    Ogre Battle 64
    Perfect Dark
    Resident Evil 2
    Star Fox 64
    Super Mario 64
    Super Smash Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
    Wave Race 64

I've played a lot of them before, just never bothered to pick them up. I guess Amazon is the best place for used games now, it looks like GameStop or EBGames stopped carrying N64 games for some reason..

    I already have:
    Jet Force Gemini
    Madden 99
    Mario Party
    Mario Tennis
    Paper Mario
    Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
    Star Wars Episode I: Racer
and many others not on the above list.

I played the Hoth level of that game maybe a hundred times. I made it through the whole thing (I had much higher tolerance back then) so I could unlock all the flight levels and just do them over and over.

The Hoth level was the best part of that game--everything else was pretty mediocre.

Shadows of the Empire is amazing. The Battle of Hoth level, Escape from Echo Base, the Junkyard, Gall Spaceport (the ridiculously long stage), the Imperial Freighter, Xizor's Palace, Skyhook Battle, are all amazing. Also the Debug Mode :D

The Asteroid Field, Mos Eisley, Sewer stages were pretty bad. I forgot how amazing this game was, I'm going to play through it again sometime this week.

fuck yeah Goemon 64. Was a great game. Not quite the classic that is the SNES co-op masterpiece, but awesome still.

I'm telling you though San Fransisco fucking RUSH. It's got this amazing racing/stunt mix and I found myself just going to the free ride mode so I could do the craziest stunts and try to fling my car up to crazy places that make the game glitch out. The Gauntlet LEgedns game for 64 is also pretty tight

Also, Super Smash Bros hasn't aged well in my opinion (not much from that era really has) but is fucking awesome if you haven't played the two most recent ones.

If you're never played Pokeman Snap then yeah dude, get on that shit. It gets old reeaaallly fast once you've beaten it though.

YES to any of the Tony Hawks, Starfox, Goldeneye, and Ocarina Of Time.

NO to Resident Evil 2. Get it for the Playstation instead.

When my friends bring over their N64, they always bring SSB for it, and refuse to play it for GC or Wii. I think it's better on both of those systems.

The fuck...are you talking about...? SSB is the SHIT. I still play this with my friends constantly. IMO it's fair superior to SMBM, SMBB...HANDS DOWN. The super mechanic control responses, and non-floating movements makes it so much more fun and requires much more skill & fluency to play.

    I can't even stand SSBB.

I like SSBM the best. Although that ball in SSBB that gives your character the crazy special move is insanely awesome.

    oh yeah also

    Donkey Kong 64
    Smash Bros
    Blast Corps
    Body Harvest
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 (2 sucked on 64, was way better on PS1 and PC)
    Killer Instinct Gold
    Mortal Kombat Trilogy
    Hydrothunder/Wave Racer/whatever
    Mario/Starfox/obvious/etc.
    Mario Kart/Diddy Kong Racing/etc.
    Goldeneye/Perfect Dark

btw there are quite a few I remember playing as a kid, but I can't tell you if they are actually good or not: Chameleon Twist 1 & 2, Bomberman 64, Mischief Makers, Duke Nukem 64 (which you could always just play a better version of on PC)

you make the call on those

It's true, man. My buddy and I would play co-op in free mode and just do the craziest shit/make up games, etc... it's one of the best free roam modes in any games I've played.

I think it's shit dumb and for noobs. I liken it to the blue shell, the shell that destroyed the MK franchise. In the newer SSB games there's just too much shit going on, and it's always less of a test of skill and more of a toss up.

thats why you play with items off. But the smash ball is actually a bit more of a tactically balanced game-changer than the blue shell. When the ball appears a player will often leave themselves vulnerable while trying to damage the ball enough, unless they use projectiles well-enough. But generally since you dont simply have to touch the smash ball, or grab it out of the air quickly, it can make things interesting

Another thing I hate is how they nerfed the throw in the later games. You HAVE to be a boss of throwing in the original.

Yeah, like Joe said, turn some of that crap off. I was getting confused until I realized that items had to go off.

I like Melee for all of its other features as well.

Ya, true. My friends and I usually play SSB with no items as well. It really sucks when you beat someone to 200% and then they get a heart.

It's not surprise, it's bullshit. What's more annoying than dominating someone in a 1 v 1, 4 stock deathmatch only to have them get a heart on their last life once you've beat them down to 205% and they're one hit away from getting star finished? it's just shit dumb luck and ruins the game.

Mmhmm, it is all about fun. And most games have some luck involved, we have to live with it (I guess not though, since there is a choice not to!).

Oh boo hoo. You've been dominating them and they get one heart. One heart's not gonna make a difference if you have a 2-stock lead on them.
