It doesn't top CT for me (mostly because I think they should have copied over the battle system), but other than that, I agree with this.
I remember enjoying CC more than CT, but I can't remember toomuch about it now. I should play through it again now.
Weird, I think the battle system is clearly the weakest part from CT and the biggest improvement moving into CC. I mean it wasn't bad (it was after all a fucking fantastic game) but there really wasn't much to the battle system in CT. The CC battle system on the other hand is more strategic and interesting, it makes you stop and think and plan shit out especially in the long boss battles which can just be epic. I get the feeling that maybe a lot of people were far younger than me when they played CC and maybe it went over their head or was too different? I was 15 when it came out.
Eh, I like the non-random factor of it, though. I loved how Chrono Trigger made those seemless transitions from the dungeon map to battles. I never understood why later games didn't pick up on that.
Technical limitations I think, it was difficult to get the fidelity of battles they wanted (full 3d) when they are pretty much pushing the boundaries of what a ps1 could do, and few games did that more than CC. I am not a huge fan of the idea of going to a battle screen either, but its not something that really puts me off of stuff, it would just be nice if you didnt have to.
So my followers may recall from a post I made in another thread recently, I've started Chrono Trigger quite a few times, and always stopped a few hours in, due to varying circumstances (not lack of enjoyment). The last time was because I lost my DS that had the game in it. Wasn't a big deal, because I knew it was somewhere in the house/already had a 3DS/can emulate Chrono Trigger/whatever, but I was just thinking about starting it again today when I found it. Here's my quandary - If I tell you fellas what seems to be happening in my save file, do you think you could recap the story to that point and maybe give me a nudge in the right direction? It's just charging at the moment.
it should be easy to let you know where you're going. lay it on me currently in cc: trying to kill dario's stupid face but he's real hard, and i have one more of the six dragon relics to get one major, major benefit of this levelling system is that you can swap characters and use them without worrying about their levels. otherwise i'd never use 99% of them. also it's a nice challenge going into a big dungeon/boss fight using characters with not-so-great attributes.
Thanks! Okay so the first two save files say "The Derelict Factory", but the most recent one says "The End Of Time". It's at four hours. All characters are level 12, I have Marle and Lucca in my party, but Robo appears to be with me. In like a hub place and an old guy explained what the place is, then a white monkey taught me how to use magic. Seem to have a choice of three lights in another room.
go in the beam of light for medina village. get your bearings there and you should end up fighting a monster named heckran in a cave. story so far: at the millenial fair, lucca's transporter invention reacts with marle's super-special pendant and she gets sent back 400 years. crono follows after her to find that everyone in 600 ad guardia thinks that she's their queen, to which she is playing along. BUT THEN, while they two are alone in the queen's chambers, she disappears into thin air, and the reason is that the real queen was kidnapped. lucca joins you, and it is revealed that marle is princess nadia, a descendant of that queen, so if things go poorly for the actual queen, marle will be wiped out of existence. the two of them save the actual queen, meeting frog along the way, and marle reappears. crono, lucca, and marle go to a time gate in the woods and return home. immediately upon returning home, crono is arrested for kidnapping princess nadia, despite marle's defense. crono's found guilty no matter how many plead innocent; but he breaks out and rejoins the other two, who are pursued by castle officials. they run into an unfamiliar time gate and escape into it and wake up in post-apocalyptic 2300 ad. while here, they discover a computer which displays the day of lavos, or the apocalypse, 1999 ad, upon which the group resolves to change history and defeat lavos. later in 2300 ad they meet robo and find a time gate, and they end up at the end of time because only three people can go through at a time.
the reason you don't have frog is that he departed in shame for letting queen leene get kidnapped. but he'll be back.
chrono cross: the burning house sequence that wakes up Kid from her coma at Radius' hideaway = holy FUCK this game is brilliant.
I recorded this a while ago, it'll mean more to you later on in the game: https://www.box.com/shared/hlppqao5b8
I beat Heckran, someone mentioned going to the fairground, so I entered the portal there and now there's five lights at the end of time. Still not sure OC what to do. If I should just explore, that's cool!
beat chrono cross after 9 days, 41 hours logged. jesus fucking christ that game. the melding of the two storylines, ct and cc, is one of the most fascinating i've ever seen. i'll probably start a new game+ on ct within the next few days.
Fuck yeah. The way the storylines come together is definitely one of the most interesting and unique "true" sequels ever.
gonna start these based on nmf's recommendation and because i listened to the entire FFIX OST today and need to play another awesome ps1-era jrpg
I really want to replay this now. I also really ought to finish CC. I've got an entire color manual on how to beat the game and get everything so I've really got no excuse other than time constraints. I do remember, in CT, being slightly annoyed at some points not knowing where to go and just wandering from time period to time period until a clue came around. I'd never put up with that shit now.
I don't recall any titles. I played it on the SNES, and I think those files just showed you which characters were in your party/levels and how much time you'd spent. So the titles now indicate which era you should be heading towards next?
Like the two recent ones I remember seeing were "The Masamune!", which hints to Frog's relationship with Magus, and "Unnatural Selection", which hints to the humans-dinosaurs battle in the prehistory. I dunno...
Yeah I don't think there were titles in the SNES version. I do recall the old guy at the End of Time for hints, because I went to him all the time looking for a damn clue, and there were a few times (not many, though), where he was not much help. I mean, eventually I found everything I needed. I finished the game without any help (no internet access at that time, or manuals that I had access to). CT is the only RPG where I've been able to do that.
really? i bought that for the SNES a few years ago (for like, fucking $30 but it got high ratings and i love RPGs), but i got really bored with it really fast. there's like...nothing to do.
also i never did finish CT, though i enjoyed the shit out of it. i can't seem to figure out wtf to do with the sun cave or whatever. i know i put the eggs there, but i don't know where they went or what i'm supposed to do with them.
It's the music, the fighting system, and just the sheer magic of the game that makes it my favorite. Try again!
I have played CT many, many times. Fucking love that game. But CC... I have tried. I don't get very far before I lose interest. I have tried two times. The first time I got up to where you first control cat man in some crazy area. I believe right after you meet him at Viper Castle. And the second time I got just slightly less far. My copy that was lent to me back in the day would never load, so I never got to play it on anything other than an emulator. I GUESS I would be down to try again, but fuuuuuck, that beginning kills me. I just don't like what I am seeing either. I hate the idea of so many random goofy characters that seem to just have interchangeable dialogue. One of the major things that made CT so great was how each of the characters was so special. Chrono Cross lovers, please explain to me why I am wrong.
the difference is that not all of the 44 playable characters can have a fully-fleshed out story behind them. some characters are tertiary, but with that said they're still endearing. also, i found the story extremely engaging at that point: harle becomes really interesting when she sides with serge (after his transformation into lynx) without ever explaining why. not to mention her dialogue at that moment, when she's leading serge out of the van gogh-esque area, is super profound ("reality marches on, leaving your crushed body behind") and one example of why i consistently enjoyed the story. take the subquest where you have to decide whether to save kid or not. if you decide to venture into the hydra marshes and get the hydra humour, you wipe out the essential regulating life form from that area and cause the dwarves to violently invade water dragon isle. as you watch this shit go down, you realize that your decision to save a friend indirectly caused the deaths of many. so in effect, either decision you make would've led to death/destruction, and there's nothing you can do about it. themes like this run through the game as a whole, and it was one reason i stayed hooked. also the main story gets really good after a bit, the only lull being when you have to collect the dragon relics. the pay-off's worth it.
Damn this thread, I'm re-playing Red Dead Redemption and FFVI right now, but now I've got a urge to start Chrono Trigger again. dat game
about 15 hours into ct, with basically just the geno dome and black omen left to go. i'm still taken off guard by the conversation and sequence that happens after the fiona sidequest wherein lucca gets to change her past.
OMG, I don't know why, but the last two times I have played CT, I have fucked that up. So I don't remember the scene at all, but I refuse to look it up.
I fucked up on saving Lara. Whoops. What's the best way to go about fighting Lavos? Through the Black Omen or using the gate at the End of Time or just flying into him with the Epoch?
