but I don't know where to start, really. I want to pursue this as more of a professional endeavor, rather than just uploading videos for fun. I want high-quality videos (probably like Travis Orbin's just for reference) and I want to post videos that will attract viewers. I'd eventually like to get enough exposure through video-posting that I could offer session time for musicians who need drummers to perform on their albums. I'd really like that. I think YouTube has become a great place for musicians to get their names out there. But there are millions of people posting drum videos. I want mine to be high enough quality that people won't close it out 10-seconds into the video. So I've nailed down an engineer and a friend with nice cameras. The only thing I need now is the money to pay them and the songs that I want to record myself playing. That's what I'm having trouble with. What songs will attract attention and viewers? I just want to begin building a name for myself and I think posting videos is a good place to start.
I think you may have misunderstood. A lot of drum videos on YouTube are just recorded with a camera and a camera microphone. If I come across one like that, I usually close it out almost immediately. I want mine to be higher quality than that and that was an obstacle for a long time. Now that I have the resources (i.e. nice cameras and a recording studio), I can start filming. I just don't know what songs to learn/record myself playing. Okay, I posted that to your first response. Those songs would be good. I've never heard that PT song, though. I'm about to look it up.
I'm glad we're on the same page. It's just so hard for drums. Even if I'm a spot-on player, people won't even give my videos a chance if they're not high quality. And you know how YouTube is. Every comment will be about the quality of the video, rather than my playing. It sucks, but I'm just going to have to shell out money to make videos. I think it'll be worth it, though. Especially if I'm using them to help build my (possible) career as a drummer.
the black page is the most retarded piece of music ever written, but it would definitely be a feat if you could perform it
I want to upload diverse tunes. I mean, I want people to know that I can do a bunch of different things. What's the best way to do it? Just record over the original song?
Is there something like google trends for Youtube? That would be cool because you could look up different tags (like the names of drummers, songs, etc.) and try and offer the videos that people look for. Then you could do those covers and they have a decent chance of getting more traffic if you post them with the right tags. Personally for watching drummers I enjoy the more jazzy kind of pieces. Btw, overall it's a pretty good idea. Just from having my couple of shitty videos I get more responses when I reply to craigslist ads and got one session recording offer (didn't work out though).
Can anyone find me full transcriptions of the Black Page #1 and #2 anywhere? Two is a lot harder to find than one.
Wait, nevermind. I think I may have found it. Two is the same part as one (or similar), I think. Just not as a drum solo. It has music that goes with it.
That's what I remember about Black Page 2 as well... it's basically the drum solo but arranged for instruments.
I kid you not, cover a super popular song and then when people see it, they'll look at your channel for other videos and all the related videos on the side will be your other ones. Cover like, a Taylor Swift song (ok, maybe not that extreme), but a Metallica song or something. Hell, my cover of Orion on YouTube is about to crack 100,000 views and it sucks, but people find my other videos like Viridian by BTBAM and stuff because of it. Also, upload your own material from TF, to get it in from that angle.
Please for the love of God do not do Seven Days. You will bring absolute and utter shame to the genius that is Vinnie Colaiuta. Nobody can cover that song.
do your own thing, dont cater your playing to other people imo. if you want viewers you have to stand out
True. I want to do my own songs. And if I ever get any session work, I can post videos of myself playing my own parts to songs that I recorded. I think that'd be the best bet.
Covers are good to do just to attract attention to your channel, but don't get "known" by anyone who subscribes as someone who will keep uploading covers. Do like one cover, a ton of original work/your own songs, another cover, etc. I wouldn't start out with a bunch of covers.
Competitions are awesome btw... every time I record a vid for one of those Shred This I get a few subscribers out of it.
