I currently own a Gibson Special SG and a Shecter C7 Hellraiser (both of which have solid mahogany bodies). I'm looking for a guitar that's going to sound very different from either of the two I have (which sound pretty similar). I'm playing rock/metal, but I want something that will have a very different color.

I've been looking at Telecasters, but I'm wondering what some of the other guitar players here think.

Strat or tele will give a completely different tone. I'd suggest looking into a fat strat just for the sake of versatility.

all that really needs to be said. the tonal versatility of a tele will probably do whatever you can not already accomplish with those two.

I'm confused. Chronowarp said strat and you agreed with him that a tele will get the job done. :p

You guys have any specific suggestions within the strat/tele types?

I like teles a lot, but they tend to have too much bite for my taste.

If you're not into replacing stock stuff...look at the American made strats/teles. There should be infinite numbers at any guitar center. I recommend trying out tons and tons of them until you get one that you really like.

I like Fenders for rock, but not for metal. I'd recommend looking into Carvins.

Go with Fender. You can get Strats in pretty much any colour ever. I recommend surf green.

I've got a Fender American Standard Strat and a G&L ASAT Classic (Telecaster). Both are pretty distinct sounding, but the ASAT Classic is more versatile and I find myself using it for almost everything.

Either of those will give you very different sounds than what you have. I'd probably recommend the ASAT/Telecaster, but I don't think you can really go wrong with either.

That G&L looks pretty fucking sexy. I'm definitely leaning toward that now.

I'd recommend one with a maple fretboard.

That's the one I bought a year ago. Has become my go to guitar for recording.

What kind of music are you playing? What does it sound like in a metal context?

It can do pretty much anything, but it's not going to give that cold, sterile, compressed, extreme metal sound. There are certainly creative ways it could be used to compliment a traditional "metal" sound. It sounds really good with rock/grunge type distortion, and the range of textures you can get out of it is very wide. It can cut through the mix extremely well. Much better than a Gibson or other mahogany/humbucker guitar would.

The pickups are actually fairly hot on it, significantly more so than on my Strat. This guitar basically made me rethink my old mindset on humbuckers vs single coils.

I'm not really playing extreme metal anyway, so that works out great. I use a more typically hard rock guitar tone as is. Man, I've got to find one of these around town to get my hands on!

Holy shit that's sexy. I would buy that in a heartbeat if I didn't have to spend every penny I have to my name right now on taxes. :(

Hmm. That guitar has a mahogany body, and both of my current electrics also have mahogany bodies. Mahogany is exactly the wood I want to avoid this go around. Bummer.

I like Teles better than Strats, personally, but it's true that Strats have more tonal versatility (3 pickups, 5 way selector). A Jazzmaster or Jaguar would be good too, and they have even more tonal versatility. You can't go wrong with any of these, really.

YES! surf green is gorgeous! i would kill someone for a pre-cbs surf green jazzmaster

I'm going to go in a different direction completely and suggest a soloist. It's maple neck through, with alder wings. It's on the brighter side, but not overwhelmingly so, and it has great sustain and note definition. I think that it's naturally more suited to hard rock/metal than a strat or tele is going to be. You do have to shop around a bit, and if you can find an 80's one that might be the best. Charvel SoCal is another option that's closer to a strat while still being a lot better as a metal/hard rock guitar.

Yeah, it's also got humbuckers. I'd stick with an ASAT Classic instead of a Deluxe.
