Anyone here had one/repaired? I had this done yesterday: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Inguinalherniarepair/Pages/Whatisitpage.aspx Now I'm sat around wearing DVT stockings, with a gas-filled distended swollen belly, and loads of staples in my stomach where they went in for keyhole surgery. Some pain, and standing fully upright's a tad uncomfortable, but it's nowhere near as bad as I feared. And hey, guys, 27% of men get one at some point in their lives, wahey! Women - you're much safer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inguinal_hernia Not mine, google image search'd:
Was there something that caused this to happen to you? I always assumed hernias were the result of improper lifting of some sort or another.
Yup, that's the norm. I seem to have had mine for years. I noticed it pop out a few months ago (I'd just had a perfectly normal non-strained poo, and was in the shower doubled up with stomach aches, and I noticed the fucking bulge as a bit of gut was trapped and gurgling, and managed to push it back in an hour later after googling symptoms and working out WTF was going on). However, I've had very similar stomach cramps a few times before over the years that I'd never been able to work out the cause, and I'm now pretty sure was a hernia getting trapped. Luckily it never got strangulated any of those times, and it went back into my body on its own, otherwise I'd be pretty randomly dead. The surgeon who operated on me said my bit of gut was quite scarred, so I'd definitely had it for years without realising. But yeah - since I have no idea when it began, I dunno how it began either - may have lifted something heavy in 2006 - dunno!
I have on right now, and it's been that way for the last 2 or 3 months i guess. But it's abdominal. I have a small tear between my abdominal muscles above the bellybutton so my guts wanna get out the first chance they get. It kinda sucks because i love mountain biking so it will have to wait until my operation. I'm kinda scared being my first real visit to a hospital for my personal need except some minor foot injury. I prefer getting into a fight with gypsies than going to a hospital and have an operation. I'm basically ok if i don't strain myself too much, so i'll be under the knife in a few weeks. I got mine from exercise and bike riding, but the doctor said the chance is that's it's mostly genetics, thin membrane walls, or any small defect, and not really over exercise, although that's the cause in most cases. Too much pressure on the abdomen.
I had a varicocelectomy done in 2005, it's a distant type of hernia I believe. In high school P.E. I was maxing out in squats on a squat machine that wasn't quite adjusted to my height and ended up overdoing it. 6-8 months later I felt a hard, rock-like bulge in my ball sack. To get to the point, it's a vein in your ball sack that balloons up. Basically the surgery entails cutting an incision in your groin, reaching down into your scrotum, pulling a testicle out (along with the blood vessels that go to it), snipping the bad section of the vein out, splicing the vein back together, and shoving your testicle back down in the sack. My balls were the size of a grapefruit (100% serious) for about 3-4 days and I walked funny for 2 weeks.
I don't have a hernia, and if I'm going to the hospital for anything, it's gonna be for this thing sticking out of my stomach!
