Thanks man I've been working on my vibrato and other techniques over the last year or so. We have one song up on facebook but that's all we got aside from those videos. It sounds good, but imo the vibato on your voice is a bit too fast. I'd like it more if it was a slower vibrato because it sounds nervous. Nice tunes overall though.
Just avoid it in general, IMO. It doesn't really have a place in that kind of music. I think it's more suited for operatic stuff or metal.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't listen to this ridiculous statement. Bosk1's Mom is clearly talking about the start of Maybe Not Today, and I kind of agree. Generally I think vibrato that thick should really be used sparingly, and in much shorter bursts, but differing levels of vibrato should be used pretty much all the time. HOWEVER That's just how I like to sing, you should use it as it feels right for you.
Uhm, not ridiculous at all, bro. If we just consider the credentials my statements overrides yours purely on my musical knowledge and skill, but if you want to provide an actual argument we can actually discuss the shortcomings of your opinion. Vocal vibrato is just not good for music like this. Doesn't fit the genre, and is more often a distraction than a positive asset.
Yeah I've gotten much better at singing Maybe Not Today. I could barely remember the lyrics on that performance and was freaking out about forgetting them (they were just finished that day, haha) so that's probably where the timid vibrato stems from. But I'm sure I do some weird vibrato on Out of the Sea too. I'm not sure I would agree with vibrato not fitting Hold Me Back though. I think that chorus and middle-eight needs some vibrato.
Also, I would defend the vibrato in the bridge of Maybe Not Today though I was pretty pitchy during it.
I know you have a lot of music knowledge, but I don't really know how that relates to the discussion. We're talking about whether a technique sounds good. Do you sing? I don't know how you can think this unless you think there's two levels of vibrato, zero and Pavarotti. Personally, I do, and I think shallow, subtle vibrato works for pretty much anything with a definite pitch. Hell, really deep and fast vibrato works for anything if the song itself calls for it. Can you name any singers that play this style of music who don't use it?
I'm not really sure what "this style of music" is anyways considering Hold Me Back and Maybe Not Today are totally different.
I was mostly just being a dickhead because of the way you phrased your comment. I don't actually think it means anything. I do sing. I sing lead and backup in my band. We play alternative/pop rock type stuff. I don't think Mike's band is far from that stylistically. When I think of most famous & well-liked pop rock groups I can't really think of any singers will deliberate vocal vibrato. I'm sure exceptions exist, but let's just focus on groups everyone is familiar with. Weezer for instance...huge influence of Mike's, I can't think of the last time I heard River's do vocal vibrato. The only really mainstream rock bands I can think of, off the top of my head, that are vibrato heavy are like STP and Muse, and I think Matt Bellamy is one of the most annoying singers ever for that reason alone. It's not even that I hate vibrato, it's just I don't think it stylistically meshes for that type of music. I can picture some on the end of a phrase, a very nuanced vibrato, but a perpetual vibrato whenever you sing anything longer than an 8th note is inappropriate IMO (not that this is even what Mike's doing, he's not).
Well this is a nicer post, if we both weren't assholes, this probably didn't need to happen, because it's pretty clear we're talking about different things, now. For example, I just popped on Raditude, and Rivers is vibratoing the shit out of If You're Wondering. I know he's not putting effort into wavering it all over the place, he might not even be using it deliberately, but I think it's important to have good control over your vibrato, natural or deliberate. I Also GOD DAMN YOU HALF JAPANE~~EEEEESE GIRLS you do it to me every ti~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~i~me was the first thing that popped into my head as an out an out expression technique.
Not a fault of the band, but the sound on the video was a bit raw. You asked but you're not gonna like this. The music was interesting but you seem a little awkward as the front man (too many "ahh's" and not enough emotion in the banter nor during the song performance. Some of your movements seem without purpose (again the awkward). The music has energy but you don't reflect it as the lead singer and the rest of the band is basically montionless (movement and interaction with crowd would help). Overall, I like the music and the band's playing is tight.
Naw man that's fair and you bring up a good point. Here comes the torrent of bullshit excuses... 1. It was my first gig in a band that wasn't just playing covers so it was my first real attempt at being a frontman. Also my first time playing guitar live so I was super nervous about not messing up on it. 2. There was like 10 people there, but I did my best trying to get people to connect. I did get people to stand up and come closer to the stage lol. 3. Those videos are two poor examples when it comes to my stage banter cause my banter was awesome and funny. But yeah I need to work on showing more energy in my vocalizing and my facial expressions, rocking out and not looking like an idiot without my guitar. You can't teach that shit, though, it'll just come naturally as your confidence grows. You can't be Robbie Williams after a couple of gigs.
