That bass fill at 7:50 in The Twilight is My Robe is one of the coolest moments in all of Opeth's discography.
I've got most of the Opeth studio discography (not that I know it all by heart or anything), but De Farfalla's work on the early albums is still some of my favorite moments in all of my listening of the band so far.
Mine too. I get the shortcomings of the first 2 albums, but there is still magic there that no band has EVER captured the same way, Opeth themselves included. The bass playing is a big part of it. Even the big "early favorite" To Bid You Farewell, has intricate, creative, and plain MOVING bass playing in it. Seriously, have a listen again and forget every other instrument. He's just killing it. FWIW Morningrise is my favorite album of all time. Still makes me stop the rest of my life when I hear it.
Johan (Swedish for "John") de (Spanish for "of") Farfalla (Italian for "butterfly") John of Butterfly (I used Google's translator so some fallability may be afoot )
Plays bass like a butterfly, gets fired for complaining Opeth should be more bass-oriented like a bitch
15 years later I bet Mikael would love to have a bassist like Of Butterfly. Would probably make Heritage a far better album
Wouldn't matter, he'd be the guy who'd make Pastorius play root notes as long as it fits his vision. But still, Mendez is pretty awesome as well.
No, but he isn't the type of melodic (leading) bass player like John Linguini I think he has some great ideas of weaving grooves into places where you don't expect them (Bleak).
