So I just finished this game the other day. I felt a little underwhelmed at the end, it didn't seem "epic" enough. I was hoping for an ending like Mass Effect.

I think the problem is that the game is Too big. The main story really takes a back seat compared to all of the side quests and locations.

That said, I still found this to be one of the best games I've ever played. I've never had the such a sense of freedom in a game since The Ocarina of Time (which is nothing (size-wize) compared to Fallout 3) I'm not exactly looking forward to New Vegas just yet, I need some time off from this type of game.

Once you realize that you AREN'T supposed to do the main quest, the game becomes much better.

So I'm doing what will probably be one last playthrough as a smooth-talking blackdude who uses pistols, just because I haven't tried being a charisma-type character yet. It's easier than I thought. All this time I was going for plasma/sniper rifles and shit, but the blackhawk revolver kicks ass. and I have more money than I know what to do with now

I'm also building custom items that I've overlooked, like the dart gun, which is more useful than I thought it'd be :) deathclaw sewers is still scary as fuck though, cuz it's close quarters, and even after you cripple their legs they're advancing on you and you're cornered and oh god. that was most fun I've had playing this game I think

I just started playing this game about a week ago and must admit that it is rapidly becoming my favorite RPG of all-time.

I like everything about it. The post-nuclear war wasteland, character development, story-line, and the battle system.

Yet, I am really taken by the mood of the soundtrack - those songs from the 40s and 50s and how they fit perfectly in an ironic way with the playing environment.

I especially am fond of Butcher Pete!

But does it have a soundtrack like Three? That music is perfect for the mood of the game.

I'll play it in about a year from now - when the price dramatically drops.

    that's the way I do it. :)

    This just arrived yesterday.

I don't know what I expected but right now it feels like playing Oblivion in a post-apocalyptic setting. And I'm trying not to overuse V.A.T.S. too much. Should I give it up and just use it everytime it's possible?

Yeah, I know but somehow it feels cheap. I know it's an RPG and not supposed to be regarded as a shooter but....yeah, whatever. I'm not even complaining that it's there.

Damn, I can't figure out why this game is so appealing. It's buggy as hell, picking up little items like grenades and whatnot is a pain in the ass without a mouse and I can't shake the feeling that I'm playing Oblivion with different textures...

...yet I still really enjoy playing it.

Level 12 now and I'm beginning to aks myself if there's something wrong with my game. I feel like the enemies are totally overpowered. If it wasn't for the weapons and armor I got from the Operation: Anchorage quest which I did right after getting out of the Vault I'd be totally fucked in the ass but I'm still having a hard time.

    Am I doin it rong?

I think you may be doing it rong. Fallout 3's difficulty was way too low if you ask me. By level 12 it was already more than smooth sailing unless I did something stupid like try to go fuck with some deathclaws.

so I'm lv20 now and just got access to Vault 112.

What I'm wondering is, what's the deal with this futuristic 1950s theme the game has going? I mean, lots of the architecture, look and music is all 50s or 60s mixed with futuristic technology. What the fuck?

Game takes place 200 years after some sort of nuclear apocalypse, which happened around the time of all the old timey shit.

It's beacuse Fallout is based on an alternate history ,which diverges from our history majorly around/after world war 2 but mostly in the 50's, in the future. It has 50's theme beacuse it's as if the values and style were preserved until world war 3 (the nuclear war which happens on 2077). and technology developed differently in some ways from our history. It's very based on how the 50's imagined futuristic stuff too.the mutations of some things (Huge rats, scorpions, ants, etc) is based on 50's science fiction (SCIENCE!)

    read this:

    http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

    http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Divergence

"Note that the Fallout world is not our own, but instead diverged from ours soon after World War II. So, while it takes place in the future, it is not our future, but the future as imagined in 1950s science fiction."

but man the classic fallouts (1 and 2) and New Vegas are so much better than Fallout 3. The coolest thing in this game is roaming the wasteland just surviving and traveling (with Dogmeat). the story and writing pretty much sucks ("I'm looking for my dad. Have you seen him? He's a middle aged guy") most of the time. it has some really retarded things that don't even fit with the classic fallouts

whathever. i'm a total Fallout fanboy

edit: If you guys want some more direct inspiration on Fallout i beg you to check out the 1975 b-movie "A Boy and His Dog". Awesome movie (with Don Johnson). based on the novella by Harlan Ellison

    trailer:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Boy_and_His_Dog

you can even watch the whole movie on youtube

(it's better to watch it without seeing the trailer, you'll have more fun)

See, this is what I was confused about. World War III is not actually happening in that time and I find it weird that these values and style woud be preserved so strongly through time.
It also makes He-Beasts statement false.

I don't understand what you are trying to say here. Are you wondering why AFTER the war are people still acting like it's the 50s?

uhhh, no. I just found it odd that in the Fallout universe, after World War Two, the world would not evolve from the 1950's norms.
Don't get me wrong, I like the 50's, I was just wondering WHY the world would decide to just keep the style of em and roll with it for the next 100 years.

man as said it's an alternate history. a world that evolved a differently from our since world war 2. it's science fiction. things just happened differently some people kept the kind of mindset from that time. what i wonder is if the other parts of the world kept that 50's style (probably yes) or just the USA.

It's just a cool imagined world

(i don't know if you are stating why you didn't get that before or you still don't get it. but it's just that. Sci Fi)

    btw guys: PLAY FALLOUT 1

if you guys want i'll point you to mods, patches or stuff so it works really great on modern operating systems and it's improved (i know it can be bought from goodoldgames for like 5 dollars and downloaded from there it's already optimized for modern operating systems)

    jesus

I get that it's an alternate world where things evolved differently, for christ's sake - I'm just saying it doesn't make sense to me that people would cling on to the 50's for no good reason because, you know, mankind is always evolving and getting tired of old shit so I can't really see them holding on to a mindset of a decade for over a hundred years.

Is my point really that hard to understand?

yeah i get what you mean Saber. but i was just commenting.

It was created that way for artistic reasons and social commentary, besides how cool it is for a unique game setting

you can check it out here, an interview with one of the main creators of the fallout series, Tim Cain, who pretty much started it

They did it based on the 50's beacuse of how they portrayed some of the nuclear war survival as something easy and more inocently. How corporations tried to profit from the fear of nuclear war

it has been running pretty smoothly most of the time but the freezings have piled up, especially during the Mothership Zeta addon(which I'm currently doing and I think I fucked up royally by not changing the death ray shooting direction and now I have to fight this other UFO but I keep hitting the earth instead lol. Also, apparently I can't go back through teleporters. I left the bridge and am not trapped in the living quarters. Please, someone tell me there's a way out).

You have no point. This entire last page or so has been completely useless save your question and roderick's post. That was all that needed to be said. The name slinging and what not stops right now and the discussion turns to the game, and it is carried out in a civil manner.

because what's left after the war is of the 50s norm. Maybe hundreds of years later things would start to change, but they just started picking the pieces of their broken civilization up. Don't see where the problem is.

You're aware of the fact that WW3 in the Fallout 3 only hits in 2077(or something), right? And that the actual game takes place 200 years after that. Right?

are you seriously still trying to debunk a series clearly built off an alternate history with dark humor roots? give it a rest, the only thing that matters is that it makes sense in the world the games create... and it does.

No, really...I'm pretty confused as to what you're trying to prove. The Fallout series is an original story; why it stayed like that doesn't matter...it's a video game. There are certainly far more interesting questions that have to do with the game. Do you constantly wonder why Maggie Simpson is a baby but is in her mid 20's? Why Bart Simpson has the appearance of an 10 year old boy but is in his mid 30s? Grandpa has to be pushing 100...

Apart from "it's a videogame" being the lamest and stupidest excuse ever I don't even have a problem with it. I just found it weird but I'm not going to push further why because it already ended in a disaster once.

Fine, be that as it may. It's a videogame. Therefore there doesn't have to be a reason for anything.

IT IS AN ORIGINAL STORY. IF I WANT TO MAKE A STORY WHERE THE SETTING IS 1955 BUT DINOSAURS ARE IN THE PLACE OF HUMANS AND INSTEAD OF TELEVISIONS THERE ARE FRONTAL LOBE LCDS INSTALLED IN EVERY SINGLE DINOSAUR AND XBOX 360S HOOKED UP TO THEM AND MADDEN 2001 IS BEING PLAYED IN THE YEAR 1955 IT DOES NOT HAVE TO MAKE SENSE. IT IS NOT A STUPID OR LAME EXCUSE OR AN EXCUSE AT ALL. IT IS A SETTING.

They aren't stuck in the 50s they are in what people in the 50s thought the future would look like. It's not a hard concept to grasp.
