Agreed. Myung is a good songwriter. And LaBrie, as annoying as he can be can write some good songs as well. To me, their best albums were when there were songs written by all of them. Look at the ones Kevin Moore wrote. Good stuff.
Neither of them are songwriters. LaBrie writes lyrics and records himself singing riff ideas. Kyung writes riffs. The only people in the band credited with writing a song are Moore, Sherinoan and Petrucci (wither).
Jesus he's like the exact opposite of Mike Portnoy. He's so humble, generous and self deprecating. Seems like a lovely bloke.
Since when did Artisan News put out 10+ minute videos? What happened to the useless pieces of information that were their 2 minute interviews that utilized clips from Wither or I Walk Beside You?
They actually started with Petruccis whole interview a few months ago... they asked if you liked watching the whole thing through.
Wow. I really love that guy. I don't know why but my Dream Theater fanboyism is coming back. I just really enjoy their music, fuck.
Yeah, same here, only this time around it's a much healthier fanboyism where I don't need to check news on Dream Theater multiples times a day.
Saw them last night in Columbus. Pretty fucking awesome show. As a lot of people have already said, it definitely seems like the band has more energy and maybe even, *gasp*, enjoy playing shows! Everyone, including Labrie, sounded spot on. I was staring at Mangini for a lot of the show because he's so fucking entertaining to look at, he's constantly smiling and he really seems to connect with all of the other band members. I loved seeing the dudes actually look like they were having fun. Setlist was as follows Bridges in the Sky 6:00 The Dark Eternal Night This is the Life The Root of All Evil Lost Not Forgotten A Fortune in Lies Surrounded On the Backs of Angels War Inside My Head The Test that Stumped Them All The Spirit Carries On Breaking All Illusions Encore: Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
I was at the show in Columbus last night as well and I agree with everything you have said. Hopefully they switch the set up for the Cleveland show tomorrow, which I will be also attending.
Nice! Would've said hi if I knew what you looked like! Let me know if they do switch up the set, I'm considering buying a cheap ticket for their Cincinnati show coming up. My friend got an ass load of pictures last night but I think he has only put one online so far. Good Myung pose.
TDEN actually did translate pretty well live at that show. Seemed like the band and the crowd got really into it. That's right, DT fans were headbanging. I really do have high expectations for the band's next album. Especially if Mangini gets in on the writing process. Or if he at least stares at the band with a cute smile on his face while they write, that should be enough motivation to write an awesome album.
I've never seen them look this happy with Mike Portnoy. Never. Myung always looked like he wanted to kill himself but now he is so happy, too, it's ridiculous
This. Also, when I met him and told him to write more lyrics, his simple "ok" response had just the slightest hint of happiness to it.
I know the feeling! Even if I didn't have the meet and greet at 5, I probably would have still left early. I've been trying to figure out what to say to them, and this is what I think I've decided on: NOTE: The shirt I refer to with JP is the one I won in the setlist guessing contest last year on here. JP: Hi John! I discovered you guys through Rock Band 2 and never looked back. I won this shirt in a setlist guessing contest on DreamTheaterForums.org last year, and apparently you gave it to the administrator, so if it would be okay, I'd really like to have you sign it. If I have time I will also say: Any cool plans for the upcoming DVD, like a Bluray or 3D version? And you guys have to do a commentary, we love those! JM: It's an honor to meet you John. You played some truly amazing parts on the last album, and I just wanted to thank you for the inspiring lyrics you have written throughout the years. JR: Hey Jordan! All of the experimentation you've done with the iPad and other instruments is awesome! I really enjoyed your Stageit.com concert and hope you do more of them. MM: Nice to meet you Mike. I think you are a perfect fit for DT, and you blew my mind last year live in Pittsburgh. I cannot wait to see you killing it out there tonight! JLB: Hi James! You are an absolute inspiration to me, having chose singing as my particular instrument. I've never sang rock or metal, but I did a couple of plays in high school, playing Riff in West Side Story and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. I know you are interested in Broadway as well, and I hope you get the chance to do it someday. BTW, the forklift videos were hilarious! Hopefully not too longwinded, and I feel somewhat stupid for having it planned out, but I don't want to waste time and/or get flustered.
Having done the meet and greet myself, I can say that you probably wont have time to specifically talk to everyone. The line moves really fast. I got to talk a bit to Mangini, and Myung actually talked to me for nearly 2 minutes, but he is really softspoken so it was hard to hear him with all 50 or so people around.
The James one might be a little difficult to get out because you really don't have much time to talk with them...it's kinda like being in a lunch line but you get to meet an awesome band instead. I had a fairly long story I wanted to tell Jordan but I ended up having to say it really fast and he didn't really catch most of what I said either. After talking to him I shortened it up quite a bit with the other members.
'sound like you have it all very well thought out, but I should warn you the line moves quickly and you probably won't have time to fellate all of them'
Myung should do more interviews. The most I've seen him talk was on the Score documentary. Don't know if he just doesn't like doing interviews, or he's just too busy thinking about playing bass 24/7
I talked to him a decent amount at the meet and greet. I asked him if performing every night for 20 + years got old, and he talked for about 2 minutes over how every crowd has a different vibe, and how the never-ending stream of people always keeps him motivated. I get the distinct impression that he is the type of person that is probably incredibly highly intelligent if you get to know him. He is soft spoken but his word selection was noticeably deliberate. It was neat talking to him. He and Mangini are definitely the most humble of the crew.
Sounds like the M&Gs have changed ... I saw them on the Train of Thought tour and basically, all five of them just stood in different parts of the room and people were "set free" to talk to them. MP left after literally 2 minutes (and I was really pissed) but everyone else just kinda hung out. It was a lot of fun.
