wouldnt it be better if they just made a game in the style of the 16bit generation? They do anyways, ever play any of the Ys games? They still pump out a new one every few years and its like fucking classic top down action rpg greatness.
I'm willing to accept that it may be the words I'm choosing, but you are missing the entire point of what I'm saying. Especially the section you quoted. What I was trying to convey there was that those labels (be they "16-bit", "1080p" or metal), have no bearing on whether the game is awesome, the talent of the developers does. Game design doesn't work like you think it does. Again I'll state that I've no issue with people trimming fat, making simple, subdued looking games. Go ahead and have "retro" art design, chiptune music, great. Such games make up a huge chunk of my favourites, what I am asking you is the point of limiting the output to 16-bit? Limiting a game to what an SNES can process? If somebody goes and does this, it is exactly as possible that it will be as good as the new Uncharted, but how good it is will not have anything to do with the fact that it's able to run on an old computer.
have you ever played facade? its freeware/indy and it is toted as one of the first ambitions to create an interactive 3d game where you talk by typing in what you want to say. it's pretty unimpressive after just a short while but can be a riot when you do get bored of trying to play the actual game and more interested in obscenities and trying to fuck up everyones world
Yeah, I think i'm just too dumb to process what you're saying here. So... you're saying the developers nowadays are the problem? They suck, and they were better before. That's why platform or whatever doesn't count? Nigga, I am confuse
Bear with me here. When AAA companies commit millions of dollars into the aspects of a game enabled by the new hardware capabilities of today (graphics, sound, cast of voice actors, and all those other bleeps and bloops), those funds are being withdrawn from the overall budget. In the time of the SNES, you didn't need decades of man-years to devote solely to animation and graphics, things that admittedly contribute very little to hardcore gamers' overall experience with a game. Therefore, in the previous generations, more of the overall budget was spent on the creative aspects of game design, making better games. That is my theory anyways. Additionally, it should be taken into account that as the industry grows, business-y types buy into the industry, and suits take fewer risks, investing in sequels, big graphics, and Final Fantasy. It just makes more money. These aren't gamers who care about their games, they are business people who care about their big bucks. Case in point: Curt Schilling, future hall of fame pitcher, is the owner of Big Huge Games. Through the 90's, video games were still being made by relatively small companies who employed avid, creative gamers. Those companies and developers are still making great games, it's just harder to find their work, because there is a lot of big budget noise at your local game store. Fact: you can have beautiful, stylistic games with advanced sound design without the most up-to-date technology. Also fact: developers don't need to develop for the SNES for great games to be made. They are being made, then threads about them are made on 5/8, and people buy them when they go on sale on steam during the holidays for less than $5. This reminds me a lot about the difference between Star Wars original saga and Star Wars new garbage. George Lucas made a better product in the trial by fire stage of his film career, and everything turned to shit when he could finance everything himself and people didn't have the authority to question him creatively. He just made tons of money by dumping the entire budget into computer animation technology. Of course, I'm not bitter about this, because the new tech developments allow for awesome movies like Toy Story to exist.
WTF? Dude, Curt Schilling is a lifelong gamer and founder of 38 Studios, a videogame developer. This company later acquired Big Huge Games, much like companies do. You're terrible at this.
Kind of. I'm saying the platform doesn't matter, because it doesn't relate to the quality of the game. (This is a sore point with me, which is why I'm having such a go at you, sorry. You'll probably see me have a similar reaction whenever anyone says "Playstation sucks", or contributes to any sort of console war somehow) I don't mean to suggest this is a 1:1 analogy, but picture the home video market (and I guess pretend you can't see movies at a cinema). People loved watching movies on VHS, I for one certainly did. Perhaps I loved movies back in this period more than I do the movies of today. Too much flash, too much time and money spent on special effects and whatnot in movies nowadays. It would be perfectly reasonable of me to wish people made movies like they did back when I enjoyed them more (the time of VHS), but what would be the point of releasing it on VHS?
I don't know if this is a response to what I was saying or your own take or whatever, but I agree with most of it.
So here's their next game http://kotaku.com/#!5768897/your-first-look-at-double-fines-sesame-street-game When I heard their next project was a sesame street game I was still gonna buy it, but I don't think I'll be buying a kinect for it.
So I just wanted to namedrop Curt Schilling and that one of my best friends sees him in the office about once a week or so. He chats bullshit with the guy and doesn't know that he pitched 20 seasons and is a shoe-in future hall of famer. So yea, he's a terrible example for my point now that I've read more about his gaming career, but perhaps more of my other points stand on their own two feet. Doesn't this kind of shit happen every time a new, popular media springs up?
^ lol Anyway, I got Costume Quest. Pretty fucking sweet, but I'm stuck. Where the fuck is the pie ingredient?
In that dude's party that he won't let you into unless you're wearing something more patriotic. Focus on getting another costume first (talk to all the dudes dressed as Abe Lincoln)
http://www.giantbomb.com/double-fine-wants-you-to-get-trenched/17-3862/ looks pretty cool. i like the main mechanic of mobilized trench warfighters
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure I pledged $15 so I get the game. I don't think this will have any trouble reaching it's goal, but MAN I wish I had enough disposable income to go for the premium rewards on their website.
Yeah this is pretty cool and could be a significant step in a good direction for games. Pledged $15 as well. Also the fact that this is basically funded already is ridiculous/awesome.
Donated $30 earlier. This is awesome. I wonder what it'll cap out at after 33 days. It has to slow down soon, but it seems like it's still picking up steam.
that's a great big bunch of cash already. 1.25mill. and these guys definitely should know what to do with it :D?
also now obsidian is asking hypothetically if people would be interested in a kickstarted project from them. an old-school rpg for the new age. i'm hyperventilating...and people seem really interested too...
Also I've seen people on the internet bitching because they put down a pledge for Double Fine Adventure thinking it was actually for Psychonauts 2.
