I've decided I want to get double bass pedals, but after a quick Google search I've realised I really have no idea how to begin researching for this, or what sort of things I should be looking for (i.e. what makes a pedal good or not), or even what's right for me. I'm looking to spend maybe AUD$300 and get something mid-range.
you can get an iron cobra jr for $150 (USD anyway) and it's the standard mid-range pedal to get. i love mine. these things are very customizable, springs, beaters, tension, etc, so what you're mainly looking for is physical stability.
if you really want to spend $300 you can get the iron cobra proper don't really know the difference myself
Well I guess it depends how much they cost here, when I last checked a few years ago $200-ish seemed like the average price in stores. But I wouldn't really be willing to spend the extra cash if, at my current playing level, I can't tell or appreciate the difference.
Main difference will be build quality and fluidity of movement. If you can afford the better one, do it.
it really does not make a whole lot of difference. of course the companies will try to overstate it, and people who don't want to own up to the fact that they simply aren't good enough are going to make it a gear issue as well. i have a pearl eliminator which is a medium-high-end pedal, but i don't really play any faster or more accurately than i did with my two previous pedals (iron cobra and a cheap old tama pedal) the only advantage the iron cobra and eliminator have over the old tama pedal is the amount of possible customization, but even that doesn't make such a big difference.
I honestly don't think I'll be doing much customisation, since I haven't had much experience with double bass pedals, and even then I think the only thing I'd be doing is adjusting tension.
It's largely personal preference. I have Pearl Eliminators and like them, but you'd probably be fine with most of the others as well. People usually recommend testing them out first, but if you've never played double bass before you're not really going to have any idea of how they should feel anyway.
if you haven't played double bass they're gonna feel like shit at first and you'll just go flubbety flub flub
