1. what country do you live in? 2. do you consider yourself part of the "free world"? 3. why/why not?
1. united states 2. no 3. because i can be held indefinitely without trial, among many many other reasons
United States Yes I do, say and think what I want, when I want, with the people I want, in the places I want and nobody can or will prevent me from it.
Nope. US. I have no control over the course of the government and my rights are disappearing daily because most of the citizens are fucking pussies.
I don't want to sound like too much of a snot, but I don't think the "free world" exists, at least not on this planet.
I should amend this and say that I feel that in America we're about as free as it's possible to be, so I'm not complaining.
US No Because our government has no interest in protecting rights of citizens, it only has in interest in keeping a majority of the population happy enough that they won't attempt revolution. Happiness is not the same thing as freedom. Most of the rights Americans believe they have are illusions. The right to free speech? You don't have it (not even when excluding things like threats and other commonly excluded types of speech). If you say anything the government doesn't like, they will find ways to harass you. The right to vote? Elections in the US are fraudulent, among the most rigged elections in the world. Furthermore, the flawed voting system in use guarantees a 2-party duopoly where both parties are paid for by the same corporations. You can bet that it has already been decided who is going to win between Obama and Romney (betting on Obama because they need to keep a black president to quell unrest in the black population after the Trayvon incident). We have a police force that acts strongly when large corporations tell them to, but try and take action against the corporations for breaking laws in ways that affect you, and the police will just hand you a stack of paperwork, tell you to contact a lawyer, and generally ignore you.
That being said, there are probably more countries where it is worse than countries where it is better.
USA No Because stupid things that shouldn't be illegal in this country are illegal and in most cases will put you in prison for a long time. All because of some ridiculous, arbitrary myth perpetuated by politicians that drugs and anyone who is involved with them are on par with rapists and murderers and should be treated as such. The government shouldn't have the right to tell me what I can and can't put into my body and certainly shouldn't be able to imprison me for it.
Romania No What Viz said, plus the church still pays an important role in the state, even though that's not the way it is on paper. A couple of months ago the mayor of Bucharest gave away 6,3 millions of euro out of state (tax?) money to building a new cathedral in the capital + other 47 new churches - which is really stupid, not only because religion shouldn't be funded by the government, but also because we basically have no highways, no highschools in villages and the healthcare system is down. Also, lots of racism/xenophobia.
the Netherlands No for the same reason as Kahless, although I do appreciate that our gov is very relaxed about a lot of social issues (such as gay marriage, abortion, drug use, euthanasia, religion etc) which gives a sense of personal freedom.
Because I’m free, I deserve everything I can get. And I’ll get everything I can get. I’m American. I’m American.
