Earlier today there was a prievew of his new album "Ki", it has since been removed though. It will hopefully be put back up later though. Devin is going to be doing four albums! The first is called Ki, it's supposed to be a mellow, yet heavy at times album about Devin's self discovery or something. The second is called Addicted, it's just gonna be an album of fun, danceable songs with cool choruses. The third is called Deconstruction Of a Cheeseburger, and it's a brutal mindfuck of epic proportions in the vien of SYL. The final has yet to be named, but it is a quiet ambient album with a theme based around sand. Here are some quotes that Devin's put on his forum:
I'm pretty damn excited for this! I can totally relate to the middle quote. Finding someone who is not only able, but WILLING to play an eclectic selection of genres is rare.
Devin Townsend is almost as embarrassing as Mike Portnoy. 'Deconstruction of a Cheeseburger' is as lame and embarrassing as 'The Count of Tuscany'. I don't hold out high hopes for either.
I cannot wait for these albums. When I think of a favorite artist/band, I dont really think of him. But looking at my Last.fm, he's my second most listened to artist and will no doubt overtake the top spot soon enough. I simply adored The Hummer. It got me into ambient music. I am very excited to hear he is going to be pumping out another album like this.
true, but at least "the count of tuscany" is unintentionally funny. "deconstruction of a cheeseburger" is just fucking ridiculous and not amusing at all.
Exactly. Not to mention Devin Townsend is immensely talented, so he can do whatever the fuck he wants.
I know what you're saying, his newer shit doesn't compare to the greatness of Ocean Machine/Terria, but Synchestra was awesome and Ziltoid was kinda cool :P
i like Devin's lame sense of humour, especially because he can take something like Ziltoid and make an awesome and emotional album out of it. i'm very excited to hear new stuff from him. not sure why people are saying he used to be able to make good music. Synchestra is up there with his best work, and that Ziltoid would be too if there were people other than him playing on it.
if you can listen to "Color Your World" and "the Greys" without having your soul explode then ur a robot
Devin is silly and awesome. I'm guessing the haters here are the same people that agreed with the sentiment that "ALL MUSIC SHUD BE SRS" that was expressed in that one big thread like 3 billion years ago.
Townsend is kind of like Zappa was in that he is way out there and has no problem injecting some humor and bizarreness into his music whenever the mood strikes him. And like Zappa was, Townsend is more than capable of making awesome "serious" music. And note that I am not putting Townsend on Zappa's level; I am just saying that Townsend is similar to Zappa in that particular regard.
Devin rocks my world. Definitely looking forward to this. He has yet to put out anything I've truly disliked.
Which yes, it about 1 out of 5. Just makes me think less of what you say about music since I saw that. I mean really, what's the point in rating anything if everything FREAKING AWESOME?
same. Zappa was extremely smart and a great songwriter but none of his music ever hits me on an emotional level like Devin's does. tbh i like reading stuff he said than i do listening to his music.
Maybe he's just been fortunate enough to hear a lot of great music? Not everybody's RYM ratings have to fit a fucking bell curve to be taken seriously.
I find RYM users with low percentages of 5 star rating much more helpful because I can know what they consider "the best of the best". But obviously, there's nothing wrong with giving out a lot of high ratings if that's how you prefer to rate things.
I doubt that ANYTHING he will ever put out in future will come even close to the greatness that Terria is but a yay! and a yahoo! to that he's back.
I'm the opposite. If somebody has very few 5-star albums, likely those albums are such a unique set to that person's specific and insular taste that there is little chance I'll share the same feeling as them. However, those people with lots of 5-star ratings tend to be the ones who include many albums I will also love (and give between 4 and 5 stars) in that set. It's much easier to "take their word for it" than with the people who have just a few.
I usually give very high ratings on stuff I listen to/watch. There would be no point to give less to something I watch/listen to regularly. If it's that bad I won't even rate it, I just rate the stuff I like. Well, most of the times.
This thread got shitty fast. Here's an idea... if you don't like Dev, stop cluttering the goddamn thread with your shitfest. And for the defenders... why should you even waste your time if someone doesn't like him? I was lucky enough to hear the preview... it kicked a lot of ass. VERY diverse, with elements from his whole career and a lot of new territory as well. Inspired material, to say the least. Does anyone know about the 3 musicians he hooked up with for this project?
Devin Townsend is serious about his 'quirky humour'. I have no problem with humour in music, but Devin Townsend's sense of humour is utterly horrible. Terria has comical moments, but they're not stupid and they work with the album. Terria's an incredible album. I want him to stop releasing dumb shit and to go back to making good music.
So in other words you don't like Ziltoid? As far as I'm aware that's his only comical release in the last 10 years...
Yes but even at his silliest there's always a very serious point (Ziltoid being the most obvious example).
I'm really looking forward to all four of these albums. He's one of the few musicians out there that I think could make all of these albums work, no matter how different the styles are.
