You completely missed my point. How is a list of only #1 hits going to properly represent all the music in the charts throughout the year? Moreover, a year-end hot 100 isn't guaranteed to represent a time period as similarly to a year-long list of chart toppers as that juxtaposition might suggest. So then we have two possibly sub-ideal representations of each scene, those representations not even being consistent among themselves. Plus, I think the word "empirical" is ill-chosen in this context.
I was mostly just joking, I listened to the radio more this year than I did 10 years ago but my memories of what I heard back then make me feel warm and fuzzy. Nostalgia is just as big an influence as a year end hot 100, but at least it does actually have the power to make you enjoy music more, even though it shouldn't.
The age at which you listen to the pop music (which also probably relates to your current music tastes) is also a huge factor.
Man, I remember hating that Blu Cantrell song so much back in the day. I'm sure I still would. Fucking cunt.
Definitely now. Just comparing the top 10 of the 2001 list to the 2011 list, which seems more fair, I can definitely say I like at least twice as many of the songs on the 2011 list than on the earlier list.
Those lists are both terrible and shitty, but at least 2001 has What Would You Do? by City High. What a tune. Am I right guys?
