Sounds like my kind of box set. I even still watch Ressurection just because Winona Ryder is in it.

That's awesome. I may well get it, even though I've had the quadrilogy box set on DVD for years.

    On Friday I purchased...

    Yojimbo & Sanjuro
    8 1/2
    The Last Emperor
    Howard's End

...from Barnes & Noble's 50%-off sale. And secured a copy of The Red Shoes for tomorrow.

    lol

re-framing the picture and removing parts of the picture are incredibly bad ideas. in most cases, it was shot the way it was shot for a reason. changing that changes the intended experience. bad idea.

Howard's End is pretty boring. Picnic at Hanging Rock should have gotten the blu-ray transfer.

The TDK IMAX scenes on blu-ray and DVD are full-screen and cropped. The top and bottom of the picture are cut off.

By TDK I assume you mean The Dark Knight. Never saw the version with the IMAX edits.

Question: who here has a plasma tv? Do you zoom the screen when you watch a movies with aspect ratios wider than your screen?

I usually do, just because I am so overly cautious with my newer TV ... although I do worry about losing picture quality with the image zoomed in. Anyone care to chime in?

I watch things in the aspect ratio in which they were shot.

Why wouldn't you? I don't understand at all what you mean. Your plasma will be fine.

Well, I've had issues with image retention, so I'm just being super cautious. When I first got the TV, I noticed for a while, that after watching a bunch of movies that I could still see the black bars when I was watching something in full-screen. It's pretty much gone now, but since then I usually zoom everything into full-screen. haha I know I'm being super cautious, but the TV wasn't cheap and I'm kinda worried about fucking it up. I'm just curious to see if anyone else did this, or has had any other image retention issues, thats all.

Edit: On a completely unrelated note; I just ordered Baraka from Amazon. I heard about this movie a while ago and finally got around to ordering it ... very excited.

Ive had my plasma for more than a year, its hard.... very hard to get it actually have burn in. Sure there will be some image retention on extended viewing of movies that are wider than 16:9 or tv shows in 4:3, but it will go away... just use the built in image retention functions (all white, scrolling bars) to get it to go away faster if it bothers you. Image retention != burn in.

I never watch anything zoomed. So if I watch a bunch of Seinfeld in a row there's two pretty obvious ghost lines on the screen, but all you have to do is watch five minutes of full-screen video and it goes away. Image retention is nowhere near the problem it was in the early days of plasma, so you should be fine.

I've used them a whole bunch of times. They're legit. Free shipping takes like two weeks in a big sale though.

How do you know what the terms are? Like I'm assuming you can only do one of the BOGO offers, but does it say that somewhere?

I have no idea, they're usually clearer on past sales. I think you can do multiple BOGO deals on one order. I just selected four of them and got a price of two BDs.

    EDIT: Good man, Nafgorp.

A bunch of new Lionsgate (read: so-so quality, but still better than DVD) releases are on sale exclusively at Best Buy for a month or so. I think it's like 10 titles or something for $9.99 or $7.99.

I got Secretary for $9.99. I think Anchorman is one of the others.

edit: found the article and details

Best blu-ray vq i've seen is Baraka from MPI, but I haven't seen anything else from that company.

Warner Bros. is the best overall imo for great presentation and great film selection.

EDIT: Actually Disney is really fucking good too.

Criterion almost consistently has the most rewarding DVDs and Blu-Rays. Their BD library is still small but it's growing fast.

The next few months of their release schedule are amazing.

Yeah, Criterion Collection is ace. Every single BD and dvd they put out seems to put together with love.

Warner Bros has the best depth. Blade Runner (still the best blu-ray ever), a bunch of Stanley Kubrick films, most of the Christopher Nolan filmography, Unforgiven, Casablanca, Heat, The Searchers, etc. A lot of them are prty cheap too. Sooo good.

BTW, speaking of Warner Bros. Upgrade some of your WB dvds to BD for $5 or $7:

    I'm thinking of doing this.
