Shit, that is great news regarding the Miyazaki film and the Alien films. I always wanted the first two Aliens on blu-ray, especially the first one. The former news increases the likelihood of seeing other of Gibli films in 1080p.

If you are in the UK you can buy Kamikaze Girls on blu-Ray for pretty cheap. I can't get it because it didn't get released in Japan, lol.

I'm so gay for that movie. Tempted to get it right now since it actually has some extras. Too bad they didn't include lossless audio only used a BD-25 disc.

The blu-ray.com review says it's region free but Nippon Cinema says Region B and the Amazon UK page says PAL. I wish I knew for sure. I don't wanna buy it then not be able to play it on my American PS3.

edit: I hope Memories of Matsuko hits BD eventually, as well.

If anyone wants to try out their sound system, the sound in the Blu-ray of Akira is 192/24. It's really amazing quality to listen to.

It might be in stores too. I'll pay for half of it if someone uploads a 4gb 720p rip.

I'm planning to order a few blu-rays when I get paid next week, so I might pick it up. Don't think I can rip it though, as I don't have a blu-ray drive on my PC, sowwy. :(

the www.blu-ray.com review for the exclusive Best Buy release of the Vengeance trilogy says the Oldboy disc is a little disappointing. Not because of lack of content, but because it does not include a lossless audio track. This is very strange because the individual Tartan blu-ray release does have a lossless audio track. I'm gonna wait for this to be repackagaed for all major retailers in June and hope they maybe fix that. Still gonna buy it regardless.

I think I made the best purchase ever. Baraka is a 100% blind purchase tho:

    2001: A Space Odyssey [Special Edition] [Blu-ray] £12.44
    Baraka [Remastered] [Blu-ray] £13.84

    Shipping to Spain included.

If they fail yet again to do a proper restoration of the original cuts of episodes 4, 5, and 6, as they did with the DVD releases, I won't be buying.

If those remastered versions become the definitive editions, it will piss me off royally. That fucking Powerpoint screen wipe he uses to change scenes all the time is so awful.

I thought the wipe transitions were in the originals? I know that they're there as a Kurosawa tribute.

Those screenwipes are all over the originals. As Zorbo said, they're homages.

I can't believe that's the first thing that comes to your mind in this case, dev. That bugs you more than the bullshit additions in the special editions?

Yeah, I'd managed to block that damn palace scene from my memory. Thanks a bunch for reminding me. :-P It has been a fair while since I saw the original trilogy, I guess a lot of things have slipped my mind.

Guess what my plan for the rest of the day is?

When I watch the trilogy now, I watch the original cuts of A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, but I go ahead and watch the special edition DVD of Empire since there is barely anything added (and that which is added isn't bad) and the audio and video quality is nicer.

It's also amazing how Lucas managed to completely rape the entire Mos Eisley segment. Like you couldn't go 5 seconds without some stupid CGI bullshit jammed into the frame ("it's so dense, every single frame etc."). Matt Stone and Trey Parker pretty much nailed the ridiculousness of the "remastered" Star Wars in 'Free Hat'.

Kamikaze Girls is one of the best looking blu-rays i've seen. The colors are ridiculously lush.

I wish I watched it before I went there because I couldn't remember any of the outdoor shots. Heres a picture matchup of the station at least.

Also, can you tell me whether it's region free or Region B/PAL? Still seeing conflicting reports.

My first blu ray buy was Predator. It looked pretty good for a movie that's more than 20 years old.

blu-ray.com gave it one of its lowest ratings ever. its existence is unnecessary and obviously a joke. it would be awesome if it were a 50gb disc and they just threw a standard 700mb xvid on it.
