I saw the blu-ray and it is flawless. Gladiator I have not seen, but the screenshots look pretty bad.

Another one of my favourites is Planet Earth. Was expensive, but worth every cent.

PE is badass in general. I have it on regular DVD and am debating whether or not I really need it on BD. Would buy if the price drops a lot.

I also consider Naked Weapon a must have but you might have trouble tracking down that blu-ray.

Band of Brothers is something I've been meaning to buy for a while on blu-ray, seems like it would be totally worth it.

Apocalypto, if it hasn't been mentioned.

I can't wait until all seasons of Lost are on BD.

Gattaca is $18? So 18 minus 3 is still 15 dollars. Or I have overlooked something?

My post was copypasta. I don't know if they jacked up the price for some blu-rays.

It worked for Starship Troopers! I thought it worked for all of those. :/

edit: nvm, amazon.ca probably won't offer this deal.

I'm watching it right now. If you don't have it on DVD already, you should get the blu-ray. But if you do own it on dvd, you're not gaining anything really by double dipping.

    I didn't own the dvd, so $10 for a blu-ray is pretty good. It's definitely not a must-have blu-ray.

I really liked it, but I really like Terrence Malik's films in general. It's about three hours long and paced slowly, but the cinematography, the acting, the scoring are all top-notch, and it's very moving and poetic. I know a lot people didn't like it, but I think you should give it a shot.

Why would Blu-Ray essentials be any different than movie essentials in general?

Some blu-rays take advantage of high def audio and video better than others.

If a movie isn't "essential" to begin with, technological advancement isn't going to change that. Likewise, just because a movie hasn't kept up with technology release-wise that doesn't make it any less "essential."

Right now since blu-ray catalogs are still catching up it's worth pointing out the titles that really allow one to revel in the PQ and SQ. For example I didn't get the most out of the movie OR the format until I'd watched A Clockwork Orange and The Fifth Element on bd.

The PQ of the Audition BD isn't that much better than the old DVD, honestly. But, it didn't look that great in the first place. Was relatively low-budget. Still, a better job could have been done.

It will be nice when every company starts figuring out how to get the most out of the raw materials and encode properly.

But, this has a full commentary track, which was not present on the previous DVD. I haven't watched with commentary yet but I look forward to it. There's also ~90 minutes of other extras. Mostly cast interviews, it appears.

I was pretty wasted for the second half of the film and still am now but I think it looked pretty great. As a gigantic fan of this film ever since I first saw it, I am very pleased with this release.

Yeah, the menu start up actually had me pissed at first because we've had problems with people switching discs at work, then I realised it was supposed to do that. Hilarious.

There appear to be new Sapphire series Godfather I & II individual discs coming out in early 2010. But, this already exists:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Godfather-Coppola-Restoration-Giftset-Blu-ray/dp/B000NTPDSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1261010346&sr=8-1"]Amazon.com: The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset (The Godfather / The Godfather Part II / The Godfather Part III) [Blu-ray]: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Andy Garcia, James Caan, Richard S. Castellano, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, Al Lettieri, Francis Ford Coppola, Albert S. Ruddy, Charles Mulvehill, Fred Fuchs, Fred Roos, Mario Puzo: Movies & TV[/ame]

Both are tagged with "Coppola restoration." Does anyone know if the new Sapphire releases are slated to be improved in anyway? There's currently no word on technical aspects, as far as I've found.

How about that current box set? How is the quality compared to the latest DVD releases?

The box set is also marked as "Coppola Restoration", so I assume there won't be any differences between the Sapphire and the current one.

I think the quality is excellent, especially the first film. The film does not look like it's made in 72 at all. You can read a picture quality review of the box set here:

    http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1613/godfathercollection.html

For two of the best films ever created, I definitely consider the box set worthy of a purchase.
