I recently tried Guinness and it was so much different from what I "expected"

I think I liked it, would drink more of it. :)

Had Victory Storm King Stout last night and I was not impressed at all. It just left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. On the other hand, I had Old Rasputin the night before that, and it is my favorite Stout so far.

    My Stout ranking:

    Old Rasputin
    Young's Double Chocolate
    McKenzie Black Lab Stout
    Guinness
    Lancaster Milk Stout
    Beamish
    Murphys
    Victory Storm King

Yeah I only bought a single bottle. Maybe I'll try it again in a few months. Old Rasputin seriously raped my tastebuds though.

Surly Coffee Bender. YUM! A little unbalanced and light feeling, but damn, overall a fine brew. I think coffee works better in something a bit heavier than a brown ale, but it's real nice, and they have the coffee flavor perfect.

I need some good beers that go well with food for our big Superbowl party tomorrow.

Cuisine is mostly Polynesian, Chinese, and Japanese.

    Recommend away.

you don't want beer too high in alcohol for any sort of spicy food, since it will just intensify the spice in your mouth.

i reckon sierra nevada's porter would taste pretty good. or a lambic. trois pistoles might be a good choice, can't say i've tried it.

I just placed an order for a Guinness branded tulip glass. Finally will have a decent beer glass besides my dimpled mug (which I only really use for something like Hoegaarden, nothing like Guinness or Young's)

I have these, they're very good for dark shit but don't use them on ales. Trust me.

Also, have you taken the plunge and bought some Guinness cans yet? I know you said you thought you got a bad batch last time... Try a decent pour in the new tulips, and sit down with some muenster cheese. Best meal of my life right there.

I wasn't planning on using it on an ale. It came in the mail today, btw

Maybe I will try Guinness cans again...

If you like Guinness, try Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Out of the can, it reminds me alot of Guinness, but is better.

I rank my stouts in this order:

    Guinness
    Murphy's
    Young's
    Lion
    Steam Engine (local brewery)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    Beamish

Since you're already into Guinness, I'd say the next viable option is Murphy's. I think of Beamish as a sort of gateway from ales/lagers into stouts, and found it way too watered down for my taste. Murphy's was just about perfect in every way, though it's not as dense as Guinness or Young's.

Ninja: All these should be out of the can, poured into a tulip - with the exception of Lion, which comes in bottle.

Do none of you guys like IPAs or anything? I've liked the stouts and porters I've had, but especially once the weather starts turning warmer, it's pretty much IPAs in my place. There are about a million great IPAs made at various breweries around the US and none of them are being discussed here. It is seasonal or do you stout guys pretty much only drinks stouts?

Then again, my girlfriend is the beer fiend and buys it all. I'm mostly into the hard stuff these days.

IPA is awesome because it can get all the way from England to India without spoiling.

Seriously though, IPA is one of my favorite types. Ruination is currently in my fridge, and damn is it great. So bitter, yet so balanced with the malt. Well done, Stone. I don't think I've had an IPA that I didn't like.

edit: Eric, I think this is several times now I've heard you mention weather affecting your taste. While I can see how different seasons can affect the brewing process, hence different varieties coming out in different seasons, it doesn't really affect my taste. I'm just as likely to have a hefeweisen in winter as I am in summer. I guess I'm weird like that. Or maybe you are. Probably me.

Seasons do affect the beer I drink, but I can't stand most IPAs. It's just not my thing, the overwhelming hop taste isn't enjoyable.

That said, and I think I've mentioned it before, but Arcadia Ale's IPA is great.

Eric, I will take an IPA over a stout 100% of the time. I don't like the stout 'engine oil' taste, and I don't mind the hoppy bitterness nearly as much. I have Long Hammer in my fridge right now.

Fucking best minute and 20 seconds of my life is the minute and 20 seconds I take to pour a guinness.

Did you hold the glass at a 45 degree angle, or did you just take the pic at the end of the surge?

Okay, I see where you're coming from with that then. They're both incredibly thick. I hate recommending this beer, but try Beamish.

Bought some of this. Really good.

Also, don't recall if I already said, but I took Slash's advice and bought some Kona Pipeline Porter. So fucking tasty.

Also got me some Wexford Cream Ale cans. Hell fucking yes.

And in response to Eric, I haven't had many IPAs but I do recall enjoying a bottle of Red Hook Longhammer once a while back.
