Dark Horse is limited in PA. I only know of one place in Central PA that gets their stuff.

Oh hell yeah. Walked into my beer store before my class, and chilling out on the shelf were five cases of Hopslam. The beer guy said the distro offered them to him, it's the last they have.

I like Hopslam better with just a bit of age on it anyway, cools the booze down a bit. Also picked up a four-pack of Tampa Bay Brewing Co. Old Elephant Foot IPA tallboys, a Hebrew Funky Jewbilation, and a 12ozer of Mad River Double Dread.

Of the two drinking vessels I usually drink out of, which is better?

Also, becoming more and more of a fan of stouts lately. I think there's my go-to now.

Finally had a Ruthless Rye. I think beers with peppercorn/spice give me headaches :(

I'm drinking a Brooklyn Monster, and I'm realizing this may be the first English style barleywine I've had. It's not at all like the sweet and hoppy, syrupy American ones I've had. Instead I get a boozy and toasty mix of cherries, orange zest, and brown sugar balanced out with just enough hops that it isn't cloying, but not enough to really even notice them. This is actually easier to drink than most of the hoppier barleywines.

Does Ruthless Rye have peppercorn and spice? I thought rye was a grain.

Fuck. The place with all the Abbey Ales I go to was out of stock, so I wound up leaving with some Sierra Nevada stuff instead. Oh well. Hope it's good.

Yea, that's more of what I meant. There are definitely spice notes, though I'm not sure it's actually brewed with them. SN says the beer brings out the "spice and pepper of rye" which is really what I was trying to get at.

So, Barleywine is not my thing at all. I don't mind strong, but that was just way too intense. Liked the Kellerweis much more.

The Kellerweis is killer, and the Pale Ale is always solid. I have mixed feelings about Bigfoot. I'd say it has too much alcohol taste coming through and the body is way too light for a barleywine. It does have a nice hoppiness though. I do find myself having to choke it down a bit.

yeah English style barleywines are a completely different animal.

try the Dominion Millennium if you can get it in your area. it's brewed with honey and is excellent.

    y'all be trippin'.

which one did you have Ister?

Bigfoot isn't the best example of the style.

I think the barleywine I had was from Schlafly, the other (better) St. Louis brewery

the only Schlafey I've had is their coffee stout (trade extra) and I thought it was pretty dope. I also got a Surly Coffee Bender in that trade so, welp

just downed a pounder of Tampa Bay Brewing Co. Old Elephant Foot IPA, I can always appreciate fresh, local beer.

I spent way too much time and effort to track these bottles down (1 per store limit), but damn if this is a killer sour beer. I am hoping to get some trades going for the extra bottles. Shooting for the moon to get some Beatification, but that will probably not get done.

Having my first Torpedo Extra IPA. I don't like it for the taste so much, but for dat pine-tree smell I'm getting. I love it. Gotta remember to have this closer to Christmas time.

Got my growler fill of Double Bastard and also a growler of Ruination.

FUCK. I haven't had Ruination in...probably a year. I dunno how I went so long without it. It's so goddamn good.

They dropped the price on growler fills of Cali-Belgique. $10 for 2L. Hell yes.

I had Ruination for the first time in a year or so last week. It wasn't as intense as I remembered it, but I've had a lot more beer since then so it's probably a relativity thing. Still delicious though.

I don't really like Cali-Belgique or Belgian IPAs in general, really, but I'd get smashed on a 2l growler for that price.

I actually kind of agree...the flavor of belgian yeast doesn't blend particularly well with in your face hops. I would rather have a normal IPA. I feel the same way about Black IPA's too....not my fave. I'll make exceptions for Yakima Glory and DFH India Brown Ale though..those are done well.

Exactly. It's a pretty typical Belgian IPA. There's nothing amazing about it as well, it's an average attempt on a below-average style. The best Belgian IPA I've had was easily Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp, since it was very noticeably HOP FORWARD on the nose, with just a little bit of that banana, spice, and yeast thing going on in the back to make the beer a bit more "refreshing" than a normal IPA.

Smuttynose's Homunculus, although not quite as tasty as the Tramp Stamp, at least wasn't the mess of flavors I usually get from a Belgian IPA. I couldn't recommend any other Belgian IPA I've had to date.

I am going to spend this weekend in Pittsburgh, as I have spent the past two weekends, for sexual reasons. I just found out that starting tomorrow, it's the first annual Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, with over 350 events happening throughout the week and 3 special collaboration beers. I will undoubtedly have to go to a couple bars or beer stores for samples and/or tap takeovers. My question however is this:

Do I spend $45 on a sour beer tasting event on Saturday? There will apparently be 30 different sour/wild ales (do I really get to try all 30? not sure...?) including Cantillon Lou Pepe, Russian River Supplication, Mikkeller Funky E Star, and Allagash Interlude. It's at a total dive in a bad part of town, but in the inside it's this:
