Which one do you like the most? Part I is the best, in my opinion. A movie based on having to save your own life by making sure your parents actually get married is a plot that anyone can get invested in. If you don't get goosebumps when McFly Sr. punches Biff's lights out and Marty stops fading into nothingness you have no soul. Part II had its moments, but not nearly as interesting as the first one. Although the alternate-present storyline was gold. When Marty gets back to his own time and finds out that not only his is father dead, but his mother has married the man who killed him!! FFFUUUUUUUUUUUU As for Part III--I'll cut it some slack cause it has Doc at his best. Christopher Lloyd really shines in the third one and it's a pleasure to watch. A pretty lame film overall with sporadic moments of genius(using the train for the climax was pretty sweet).
I think 2 was more engaging. The entire part with the fucked up neighborhood is probably the bleakest part of the series, and it demands that you keep watching it in order to see it resolved. The whole get-the-almanac-back part is also extremely suspenseful for that reason. This is one of those movies that I could catch on TV one day, get sucked in and not be able to turn off. One thing that's always intriguing about time travel stories is how the slightest change can make a huge difference, and I think I like 2 more just for the fact that the problem seems a bit more severe and "bad." I also never really dug the end to the first one; while everything mostly changes for the better, it feels kinda wrong that Marty wouldn't find some of the differences to be a bit surreal and unnerving. In fact, if a relative I knew had undergone such a complete change overnight, they'd seem more like a stranger to me, and I would kind of miss the person I knew before. Not to mention how fucking awesome the ending to Part 2 was.
I haven't watched any since I was a kid but from what I remember I liked 3 the best. I really gotta check out all 3 again.
1 has 3 of my favorite music scenes out of any movie from my childhood (the metal cover of "Power of Love," the Darth Vader scene with the Van Halen tape, and then the spastic "Johnny B. Goode" solo." Plus, the amplifier exploding at the beginning. Classic.
One of the best trilogies ever, maybe not the best, but how many are even close? Star Wars, LotR, so top3? norbert88
To me, a great trilogy is one where all three movies are pretty close in quality. Even though the first two Godfathers are both in my all-time top three, the third one is just sorely lacking, and prevents it from being the best trilogy, IMO. Had it been great at all, that trilogy would win by a ridiculous margin, but it wasn't. Even if you like it a lot, you have to agree that it never comes close to touching the greatness of the first two.
back to the future 3 is close to being as good as the first two? i think godfather 3 is perhaps the most underrated film ever. no, it's not close to the first two, because those are examples of films that are perfectly constructed in every single way, but it's a ***1/2 movie, and certainly better than back to the future 3
II is best because it actually gives you a sense of doubt. One didn't have this, because you know (or you think you know) how it's going to turn out the whole time. In II, they say no, time is not static, we're breaking all the rules.
Get on that, AndyT! Actually a pretty good point. I felt the same way. I was kind of expecting the message of the movie to be, "You might want your family to be different, but ultimately you should be happy with what you have"... like Coraline or something. On one of the special features I saw, Zemeckis said something like how the first movie really played to the materialism and views of success of the 80s, and that that probably isn't as virtuous as it might have seemed at the time. Thought that was interesting, especially in regards to the ending with Marty and his new truck, new parents, etc.
The first one is the best simply because it has Crispin Glover in it. Then again Part 2 has Billy Zane so it's a close call.
I think they are equally strong if I'm honest, though in different ways. 1 will always hold a special place in my heart though.
I like BttF III a lot, but I know some folks find it the least interesting one because there's none of the time-travel paradox stuff. Yeah, he goes back to the Old West at the beginning of the movie, and gets back to the future at the end, but the whole movie is set in one timeframe, and the only thing providing the sense of urgency is the photograph. The original of course set the stage, and II goes back and revisits the original in some pretty clever ways. It also feels darker overall. Even though Mad Dog Tannen was a genuine outlaw and would've shot Marty dead, he came across as comical due to being surrounded by the same group of idiots. Future Biff seemed more of a threat. I rank them I, II, and III in that order.
III was cool because it was in much more question whether they would be able to get the damn thing to work with 19th century technology. That was the whole thing. It really put them at a disadvantage. Also, II feels much thinner to me. Like, they figured they had to hold your hand through it in the way that kids movies point out every bit of humor and plot.
There's a lot to like about III, and I do like it. I think all three of them are great. The train for thing is awesome, especially after being modded for time travel. Also, I'm a sucker for Mary Steenburgen. I don't know why, either, 'cause she's not that hot, but I've always loved her. ZZ Top as the band at the hoe-down were great. But I still like II better.
