I'm voting for the bitch because of the internet.

What about other Australians, and why? I can be swayed.

Greens offer me some things that I would like, but there are so many aspects that I can't stand about their entire party.

In regards to everyone else: I don't want to vote for a party lead by a catholic, right-wing twat, but at the same time, I also don't want a big old 'Union' in power. I am pretty much fucked.

    1. Their complete ignorance on nuclear power

    2. Bias scaremongering in regards to genetically enhanced food

    3. Their attitude towards religious crime ('freedom' for all religions is their claim, despite specific religious actions undertaken in Australia contradicting their 'human rights' and basic laws.)

    4. Their lies in regards to science (they say they wish to end things such as world hunger through science and technology, yet other polices contradict procedures that may be undertaken to move towards this goal)

    5. Their obsession with 'nanoparticles' and how they seemingly deem them as pure evil.

    6. I dislike their fucking PETA like intent to stop scientific testing on animals. Most of modern science and medicine was developed this way. Stopping the use of animals for this purpose would contradict their supposed encouragement of the scientific fields. Removing animal based or tested products in medicine would also mean things such as Insulin could not be used.

There are more, but they are some big ones. I personally believe that people just vote Greens because it seems the easy way out. They do have some great ideas, but these are coupled with some awful ones.

Nuclear power is not all that it's cracked up to be. No, it doesn't generate any greenhouse gases, but it produces vast amounts of nuclear waste.

Genetically modified (I like your nice unbiased use of the word "enhanced" :p) organisms may be safe for human/animal consumption but we don't know enough about it yet, especially whether there any long-term effects/build-ups (nobody could foresee what happened with DDT). Plus, GMOs are produced by companies like Monsanto.

I don't see anything here or here about stopping scientific research involving animals.

    1. There's quite a lot of support for a movement towards nuclear power, there is just an uneasy amount of trepidation. I have a friend who works in it and he has shown me some very interesting articles. It's definitely one the most viable and safest sources of energy

    2. The problem is that we have genetically enhanced and genetically modified foods. They want to ban both, despite enhanced being perfectly edible and safe. Modified is a different story.

    3. They want to ban animal testing within 'industrial' research. That means anything that can be used in a business sense or to make profit ie: medicine companies. Medicine companies provide us with some very big breakthroughs. It seems counter-productive to me.

Only semi-related, but I also hate the self-righteousness of people who vote for the party. Don't look down on me!

Viability/safety are not the issues here, it's what you do with all the radioactive material when you're done.

Explain why you use "modified" and "enhanced" as two separate terms, because I can't understand it.

If you think pharmaceutical companies seriously have the public's best interests in mind when they conduct their research/develop their products then you're probably employed by one.

    1. At the moment, ANTSO does geological storage, something that people seem to fear will have dire effects on nature. Beneath Oklo (a naturally occurring nuclear reaction), however, fission products and actinides have only moved a couple of centimetres in around 2 billion years. The 'negatives' they fear can hardly work their way through the earth's crust. I don't see the justified hysteria behind what is progress.

    2. Genetically enhanced is when they cross pollinate species of the same food to create a super food. We've done it for centuries. Genetically modified is when they actually add something foreign to the make up. Hell, a standard Banana is technically enhanced. We developed it by cross-pollinating it with stronger strains of it's own species. Originally, this cross-breeding was called genetic modification but due to the appropriation of the word and it's misuse, they've had to place it under another name to quell unfounded fears.

Organisations like the Greens and Greenpeace just spread ignorance on the topic. People are misconstruing the meanings and subsequently they are being suckered into buying 'organic' food. There is nothing wrong with genetic crossbreeding. Hell, even Norman Borlaug, the guy who pioneered it, won a nobel prize for his contribution to science and world peace. It's what we need to stop world hunger, but 'green' organisations lump it straight in with genetically modified foods. If it were up to the party, they would force all cross-pollinated foods to carry a stamp saying it was genetically engineered. How is a person meant to know the difference when they are being fed misinformation? It's causing a prejudice that is completely unfounded.

    3. I never said that. I said they make breakthroughs via animal testing. We would lose that if we were to remove the ability to experiment. Especially considering their definition is so god damn loose that they could prevent all animal testing in any way, shape or form. We would pretty much be at a stand still in the medicine world if this were to happen.

Like I said before, some good ideas, a lot of bad ones. Surprisingly, I don't think they are the worst party.

Hung Parliament essentially means no-one has won and there will either be a re-election, a coalition government or smaller parties will decide the issue by throwing their support to larger parties. I think.

Because Labor didn't, effectively - even if Julia Gillard is prime minister she'll have no power. Granted, Abbott won't either but Gillard used to have power.

Essentially, if the public shows they have no faith in a labor government then liberals win by default. In truth, though, Greens will most likely have the power.

    one damn seat

This is way too close for either major party to make a legitimate government. I would hope that the Greens' convictions are too strong for them to compromise on policy and side with either big party, meaning the two big parties have to convince the independents. Or just call another election.

Slightly off topic but, is it just me or is Australia WAY behind the times in the way the election is actually done? I mean, surely they could set up an online voting thing so people don't have to go out to a polling place and fill out that stupid piece of paper. Not to mention the financial advantages.

    exactly.

anyway, i'm hopeful that the greens can make something of getting a lower house seat and do something good with it. if they can it could be exciting to see them develop some power in the next few years and hopefully drop some of their shit policies.

So the whole world is in economic crisis and we still waste millions of dollars on an election? Seriously? This is the 21st century dammit.
